Allow me to clarify something here: in rock guitar there is Hendrix and there is everyone else. A bracket could therefore be created in which an Elite 8 or a Sweet 16 battled for second place. But that's all they'd be battling for.

I jst recently saw him on Jools Holland doing "All Buttoned Up" on that red Stratocaster. He was ripping out these fierce leads, with the low string droning, wailing with the pick and finger picking all at once. Not an f/x box in sight.

I don't believe in guitar heroes. I like great songs.
So I'd rather listen to Dire Straits than any band Clapton ever put together because Knopfler uses his guitar to create something I find more appealing.
Caveat: I understand that I might be missing something that Beck or Hendrix, etc., are doing musically that doesn't communicate itself to me. And I can even see that somebody like Clapton is 'better' than Jimmy Paige, but Paige created something more than Clapton did, imo, when he put together a band and produced a series of classic songs, albums and tours.
