. They could seriously, and very nearly did, spend considerable time in jail, at a time when that would have done them and their careers no good at all. (Not least because it would have put an end to overseas touring.) Thy didn't want PR like that.Quote

The bust(s) that saved the Stones in 1967. You can't buy PR like that.

I recall reading that the raid occurred only after George left because they couldn't be arresting a Beatle.
I wonder what would have happened if George and Patti decided to stay the night? Would the 15-20 police officers just waited in the bushes all night?
This is the reported list at Redlands that day:
1. Mick Jagger – singer of the Rolling Stones
2. Keith Richards – guitar player of the Rolling Stones, owner of Redlands country house
3. Marianne Faithfull – 20 years old and girlfriend of Mick
4. Christopher Gibbs – friend of Mick Jagger
5. Nicky Kramer or Cramer– The Kings Road Flower child
6. Robert Fraser – Art dealer and gallery owner
7. Mohammed Jajaj - Moroccan servant of Robert Fraser
8. David Schneidermann - Californian whose nickname was the Acid King
9. Michael Cooper – Photographer
10. George Harrison – Beatle, left with Patti Boyd before the bust
11. Patti Boyd – Girlfriend of George Harrison
12. Tony Bramell – Friend and associate of Beatles, left before bust[/quote
It's also possible that Tony Sanchez and David Litvinoff made an appearance during the day. I think most of the peeps on the beach at West Wittering in this photo are accountable except far left and far right - any ideas?

Could it be Prince (Stash) on the beach photo also?
Mate of both Keith and Brian at the time.
I think I read that Brian and Anita were due to join them....until they heard the news of the bust.
Apart from Marianne and Patti...very much a boys get together. No groupies?

Would you honestly expect Keith (or anyone) to invite groupies over with your friends on a winter's day of hanging out, dropping acid, wandering around the beach, smoking dope, sitting by the fire, drinking wine, listening to music, relaxing, and talking...?

You might have a point there Doesn't seem in character for either Keith or Mick, though.

'Because of the women being present.'
I thought Marianne was the sole female when the raid took place?

I have 2 questions-
1) Did they ever put a proper roof on Redlands...
or is still covered with hay?

Maybe not the best house for a smoker who nodded off once in a while.

I have conflicting opinions about this episode.
On the one hand, the Stones (and Brian and Keith, in particular) were set up and harassed by the police.
On the other hand, they were flagrantly breaking the laws at the time.
Not so flagrant, since they were in Keith's own home, and the law about allowing your home to be used etc. etc. was subsequently changed, largely as a result of this incident. As it should have been.
I still have all the press clippings from the time, and remember the drama of them going to jail, the fear that it would be for a long time, the fellow musicians like the Who rallying to show support, the relief when they were released . . It all seemed like a bizarre dream.

As far as I'm aware it is still an offence knowingly to permit premises over which you have control to be used for using controlled drugs and always has been in the UK. The law was not changed in any way as a result of the Stone's convictions - Keith's conviction was quashed on a technicality and Mick's sentence (rightly) reduced.
