I love 2000 Light Years, 2000 Man, Citadel and She's A Rainbow. Apart from those I can't really get into the rest of the album. The other songs seem to just wander in a druggy haze without much direction. Bill Wyman's tune is a novelty but not really an example of what I want from the Stones. But oh man, how they did find a new mojo with JJF!

I really love The Lantern. I agree with Redhotcarpet on this one (for once!). It might even be the strongest track on the album, and a centerpiece.

8/10 and 9/10 are not merely «good». That's closer to «excellent», isn't it?

True. But this is a scale solely invented for the TSMR album. It's not an absolute scale.
I mean, compared to Gimme Shelter, Jumping Jack Flash, Tumbling Dice or Let It Loose, Citadel and She's a Rainbow would be somewhere between 6 or 7 (She's a Rainbow maybe close to 8). So: good, not excellent.

The Worst.
Critics always say that TSMR was inspired by Sgt. Pepper's, but to me it sounds more inspired by Piper at the Gates of Dawn than anything else.

That would be a solid EP, GasLight.
Would this be a better album? It seems Gomper and STAT(See What Happens) are the most bashed.

In Another Land
2000 Man
She's A Rainbow
Dandelion
The Lantern
2000 Light Years From Home

Take out the remaining Sing This All Together, 2000 Man and On With The Show, maybe add Child of the Moon and you'd have an odd but very enjoyable and certainly artistically good album.

At that time, the band was more daring than at least today's fans. Thank you for that! But on the basis of such responses, no wonder about the warhorse dominated setlists of the latest decades. So richly deserved!

Other than very rarely hearing the more obviously well known tracks now & again, I really haven't taken this seriously for more years that some of the fans here have been alive but I sort of stumbled on it and got engaged and let it play all the way through the full album as released, and don't throw too many bricks but I loved it all the way through; I hope I'm not having a flash back or something; trying to think back to when it was released; I got into it; I loved a few right off the bat but even in '67 it wasn't a particular favorite all thru so I was delightfully surprised; I really just loved it; felt really comfortable with all of it; a lot of stuff I had thought second rate really shone. I know it's the easy one to slag but I'm recasting it's place in my casual list of the disography rating; I think there are at least a half-dozen studio LP's I'd rate below it easily now. Maybe more. I was surprised it was engaging as a whole piece and now I'm a real fan of this whole album.

TSMR stands for Their Satanic Majesties Request. It took me about 15 minutes to figure it out. Hopkins, if you want people to participate in your thread, you need to be more specific. Not being sarcastic, but just trying to help out.
If I said my favorite Stones songs were GGA, TAY, LWYD, or SS, would you instantly know what I was referring to?

The abbreviation thing does get a little frustrating when it's overused, but TMSR is a very common one around these parts. Like YCAGWYW, LSTNT, and CYHMK, it saves a lot of typing for the longer-named songs. But using it for shorter titles (S for Sway?) can be confusing. Your SS Example could be Soul Survivor or Star Star.
