A Bigger Bang......best new Material since Some Girls
Posted by: Milo Yammbag ()

"Bang" has an energy flow and crispness, as an album of NEW material, that I have not heard since Some Girls. I would mention Tattoo, but we know that album came out of the vaults and in a sense was not "new" material, although it is a great album.

Going to MSG ON 9/13, then cathcing them at Giants Stadium on 9/15 (row 22, front middle section).

Opinions ? Would love to read them.

Some Girls a short album... yes if it would have been CD time in 1978. But they only had the best format of all time in 1978, DA VINYL. You cannot put more on a vinyl in 1978 than you have on Some Girls. The ellpee rockssmiling smiley
Have only got some seven out of 16 tracks so far on the new album as the CD is not in the shop´s yet here in Finland on Saturday, but still I love every one track I have heard. A strong ellpee for sure. Just vaiting to get my big black with a small whole in it before I can enjoy it in full blastsmiling smiley

I agree with you Milo. ABB is the best album since Some Girls but to go one step farther and say it is even better than Some Girls. I listened to the entire album today and it is everything a Stones fan could want. The flow of the track list is great. You know we're all getting older, couldn't take all the rockers in this one back to back. The album has all the hard rockers spaced with ballards and less pluse raising tunes.

As I listened, I tried to think of which prior album each track would have fit best on:

Rough Justice - IORR
Let Me Down Slow - EXile On Main St.
It Won't Take Long - Voodoo Lounge / Main Offender
Rain Fall Down - Bridges To Babylon / Goodess In THe Doorway
Streets of Love - Goat's Head Soup
Back of My Hand - Beggars Banquet
She Saw Me Coming - Emotional Rescue
Biggest Mistake - Sticky Fingers
This Place Is Empty - Steel Wheels
Oh NO Not You Again - Some Girls
Dangerous Beauty - Dirty Work
Laugh, I Nearly Died - Tattoo You ( in the middle of side 2)
Sweet Neo Con - Studio Track on Live Licks like Highwire on Flashpoint
Look What The Cat Dragged In - Undercover
Driving Too Fast - Black and Blue
Infamy - Their Satanic Majesties Request

Just something to do while listening - opinions welcomed, just for fun, nothing to have arguments about

Just got the album today, although I've had the songs for a while. The albums grow every minute, and it's great. No use in comparing, as a lot of Stones albums are so good. I guess I have fifteen albums on my number 1 list! They are all just as great, and they are all a product of their time. A Bigger Bang is just as good as any other of the greatest ones. What's special about it is the fact that Mick is playing bass and loads of other stuff. And it's also cool that they don't use horns, and use very little strings and stuff like that. Just plain rock'n roll. Yes, I think we all should be happy with this one.

Such a useless discussion...
Who the @#$%& wants to know, on which former album which song would have fitted.
Must be lame stuff you're smokin. And to you, LightningFlash (your name is program?): Dirty Work for sure is not bad, and Some Girls is one of their greatest 7th come back album ever. You're silly, because you obviously got no idea of the music scene in the late 70ies, when the Stones @#$%& the punk scene with a disco/punk album which was pure Rolling Stones.

Some strange "fans" out there...

I just got the Cd, Put in my car and took off down the coastal highway.. Christmas and birthday presents all coming at once!

This is better than Some Girls ( in my opinion) . Only because it has 6 more tracks . What is on there is definately comparable in quality to Some Girls and it is longer.

The first three tracks on ABB is a killer combo! Let me down slow really fits well after RJ. Then It won't take long!

Back of my hand and She Saw Me Coming are perfect next to each other. One is basic Delta blues. Followed by simple ( but brilliant ) electrifyed rock! The foundation (BOMH) and the plugged in rock it sporned (SSMC). I love it!

But this album doesnt nose dive. It keeps building. ONNYA kick starts the album a
second time. The only dud/filler is Driving Too fast. I really don't like it. Someone else may though. Also streets of love I skipped so My rating is 8/10. The best rating I could give a 16 track album. I don't think Exile is perfect either.
But it is the best album since Exile

I've been driving around with this record for the last few days (and had listened to it a bunch on the web prior to that).

"Rough Justice"--a great kick.
"Back of My Hand"--excellent. perfect.
"Infamy"--nice groove, harp from Jagger.
"Laugh"--dark soul/can't be ignored.
"Let Me Down Slow"--catchy. fun.
"She Saw Me Coming"--good funky rocker.
"Driving Too Fast"--as above.

The rest? Forgettable at best. "Neo Con," "Look What The Cat Dragged In" and "Biggest Mistake" are deadly painful.

There is more wit and sass in "Shattered" alone than in all of "ABB." The very best things on this record wouldn't compete with the weakest tracks on "Some Girls."

"Emotional Rescue" is a great, quirky album. As is "Undercover." "Tattoo You" is a great album. "Steel Wheels" and "Bridges," especially, are far superior to "ABB." This is closer to "Voodoo Lounge" or "Dirty Work."

I love these guys and I love "Back of my Hand." I must say that, as a whole, this is a very deep disappointment.

I'm sorry to dampen anyone's excitement...but I promise you that "Just My Imagination" and "Far Away Eyes" and "Out of Control," for that matter, will be with you long after "Dangerous Beauty" is forgotten.

I think A Bigger Bang is a much better album than Some Girls . There's a much greater breath of sound. The problem i have with Some Girls is although it is very consistent it's also rather lightweight and i get bored after a few listens.
For me at this present time A Bigger Bang stands just outside the big 4 along with Aftermath and Goats Head Soup.

I like this as much as Some Girls, more once I removed the songs I considered good but not great (Let Me Down Slow, Biggest Mistake, Infamy, Driving Too Fast) and the one that sucks (SOL). If I had to rate their post-Exile albums it would be as follows:

1. Some Girls (tie)
2. A Bigger Bang (tie)
3. Tatoo You
4. Bridges To Babylon
5. Voodoo Lounge
6. It's Only Rock 'N' Roll
7. Dirty Work
8. Steel Wheels
9. Black And Blue
10. Emotional Rescue
11. Goat's Head Soup
12. Undercover

All are good IMO except Emotional Rescue, Goat's Head Soup and Undercover. Each of those has 2-3 good songs and the rest I'm not crazy about.

Everyone....I am not doing a "Bang" vs "Some Girls" (or any other Stones album) thing here. Comparing albums is not my point.

I do not believe in Comparing albums....it is pointless for many reasons. Music is very personal what is crap to one may be great to another fan.

What I meant to say is that I feel that "Bang" is the best album since Some Girls". That is just my opinion.

By stating that I am in no way slamming any album in between.......a lot of time and albums in between
1-Emotional Rescue (essentially SG Leftovers)
2-Tattoo (left overs from 73-80)
3-Undercover
4-Dirty Work
5-Steel Wheels
6-Voodoo
7-Bridges

I like them all. Tattoo is hands down a classic album, we all agree. I Like Undercover. Dirty Work: uneven at times but has its merits. Steel Wheels: had the right tone for the time, back together an easy spirit about it. Voodoo: a very strong album (if it were the days of vinyl and some songs had to be cut it would rated a classic, in my opinion), Bridges: Half KR, Half MJ right down the middle..with the exception of "Baby" I like it.

Bang just has a feel to it that is good. The music is strong a couple of really nice melodies and chorus, that are memorable, catchy and likeable. Bang just sounds right and it has a feel and energy, that reminds me of SG. I am not comparing the music....its the feel. I am trying to express it the best I can.

Bottom Line: I like Bang A LOT
