Charlie's most eccentric drumming
Date: November 16, 2016 13:12

Charlie is a wonderful drummer, and he really knows how to serve the song.

However, there are examples of him almost going berzerk in certain numbers. What's your favourites among those songs?

A couple of examples:

Dandelion:
A sweet and melodic song, where Charlie is pounding away like an uneven machine gun, yet it's brilliant.

Let Me Go:
A pretty straight-forward rocker, where Charlie is turning the rhythm upside down, breathing fresh air into something that almost was going generic.

Ruby Tuesday:
Machine gun-rolls in a tender ballad. Say no more. It's a shame he doesn't do them anymore smiling smiley

To me Honky Tonk Women still shows his best studio recorded drumming.
Apart that the sound of his drumming in HTW is one of the best drum sounds
I ever heard on records.

Not a drummer myself so it's just my 2 cts.

Agreed, but I wrote «eccentric», not «excellent» winking smiley

Answer: The way he uses the bass-drum during 5 sec in the last part of "Lies". Didn't he do the same same in "Where The Boys Go".....think he did

Good call, Erik! He is also altering the rhythm bizzarely in Where The Boys Go. Very cool stuff.

Indeed, DP, he was in his peak in them 1977-1981 days

I think the way he uses his crash cymbal rather than his ride cymbal on most songs nowadays is eccentric. I used to love his sweet ride sound but now he just goes for a clangy crash wash. It's distracting and off-putting.

Sorry DP, my fault.
The reason for it is that every time I hear or read something
about Charlie's drumming immediately HTW comes to my mind.
It's just my all time fav Stones studio recording. smiling smiley

The way he propels the rhythm on We Love You is fabulous. Charlie the Octopus.

The intro on Start Me Up. Everything is wrong on paper, but somehow it works and makes the song even greater than it already is. No one but Charlie would have played like that. And that is the reason why all cover versions of Start Me Up are boring.

Where the boys go

By all means his worst performace on record.
Horrible, out of time and speeding.

So true. When I play along to it (and I'm not a trained drummer by any stretch), I just have to memorize how he does it. It doesn't make any sense from a timekeeping perspective but it's utterly unique.

It's Only Rock And Roll on Love You Live; excellent and in someway eccentric. 2000 Man is another one that comes to mind.

I only say Tumbling Dice because I played it this morning and couldn't get over Charlie's drumming. Also I Just Want To See His Face has very interesting drumming with some percussion assistance from Jimmy Miller.

Paint It Black

around 1 min 38 ... there is a very violent fill

which is just brilliant crazy , to me, always remember hearing it in the car,

on the AM radio, 1966, and listening for that fill

what a great song, and a showcase for Charlie just driving that beat home

I agree. Not to mention how bad the song is.

Disagree strongly. He shakes up a track that almost is turning generic.

2000 Man is brilliant, and his drumming is very unusual indeed.

I reckon you mean Charlie's part on TD, and not Jimmy's (almost the last half)? winking smiley

Yeah, Charlie couldn't get it down correct? Maybe you should also have a thread for Jimmy's eccentricities.....>grinning smiley<

Definitively Dandelion, the end of the song is amazing. There's a pic of him and Macca during those session, it seem more likely the end of We love you with Charlie banging drums and Macca cymbals. Also, 2000 man, not what you expect from a drummer!! The intro of SMU is a treasure, I've study it hard fir training drummer on cover bands, and they never can!! It's just a hi-hat on 3 one tom on 4 and a big snare in 1!!! Absolutely unusual, just magic and mind-puzzling. His use of the crash today is weird but effective for me. The drum intro of HTW is just another werid example example, perfectily in time, but as the cowbell didn't start at beat 1 sounds crazy.
