Old acts, like the Rolling Stones, surely must have a high percentage of consumers actually buying the physical product (the album) as opposed to downloading it on net sites?

I think you've got a point there. I mostly listen to music on my phone these days, but even so, buying a download just doesn't feel "real" to me. I was thinking the other day that when this one is released, I will definitely buy it at a record store, and I may well buy the vinyl version just for old times' sake. The last time I bought a Stones LP in a shop was over a quarter century ago, when Steel Wheels came out.

I appreciate a physical piece of music much more than downloads. Maybe when I retire and have loads of time I will enjoy the hobby of organizing digital music but not now. (And yes I do purchase songs digitally)

I can't wait for "Blue & Lonesome." Christmas-themed posts will be fun that time of year, too.

worst Rolling Stones album in history.

You´re always confusing Dirty Work with Between The Buttons, I guess.

You are calling "Buttons" their worst album? I am speechless. Buttons is one of their best.

There isn´t one single outstanding song on Buttons. Nothing I´d call essential. Some nice ditties but nothing that could excite me. And most of the times they don´t even sound like the Stones. It sounds Kinks-like. Thank God this is the final chapter of their "pop-period". I only accept Between The Buttons as part of their evolution as a band and songwriting team, but it never did anything for me. TSMR is much more interesting and has true outstanding songs on it.

Ruby Tuesday
Let's Spend The Night Together
Connection
Back Street Girl (UK version)
She Smiled Sweetly

are all great songs

Yesterday's Papers
Something Happened To Me Yesterday
Miss Amanda Jones

are also really good

All imho, of course. Calling RT, LSTNT and BG «ditties» is hilarious - especially as the two former tracks almost have warhorse-status. There might be a reason for that?

I am referring to the UK-version of BTB, which hasn´t Ruby & LSPTNT. Those two songs of course make the US-version the better choice, but overall it´s still weak, imo.

The nicest ones are (still referring to UK-version):
Backstreet Girl, She Smiled Sweetly.
Everything else seems mediocre to me, not-Stones-like and/or weak. Many many pop ditties - just not essential.

Listening to the mono box set BTB may be the weakest release of that decade IMO. Flowers is nice and picks up RT and LSTNT.......

Miss Amanda Jones HAS to be Stonesy, surely? If not, I can't follow you smiling smiley

But I see we picked more or less the same good tracks off Buttons..

There's definetly two guitars on Just Your Fool. Ronnie plays rhythm too and some lead licks with a very distorted sound which indeed sounds like a harmonica.
And then there's a harmonica overdub at the end of HTSYG. At the very end one harmonica stays on that high note and suddenly another harmonica plays on top of it.

Those are great quotes from the band. I keep thinking about something Bob Dylan might have said. Can somebody look this stuff up for me? I'm pretty sure Bob Dylan said you can play Rock & Roll music if you have a blues and/or hillbilly influence. I'm not saying I disagree with Keith. But didn't Bob say something about a hillbilly influence, too? Can Christiano Radke confirm?

Yes, I see the UK version of 'Buttons" as the proper album; the US versions went after hits. I don't get so much into outstanding or essential. I put the album on, and it rolls over me, so it is all essential in the moment. I don't see it as a Kinks album at all, but as the Stones on their path in '66. So in that it is great.
But keep posting; I dig your opinions.

I agree with HMS here.
Whereas TSMR has 50% absolute cringeworthy nonsense, the other 50% is great.
And DW, awful as it is, does have One Hit, Harlem Shuffle and Sleep Tonight.
Buttons only has fake-ish popsongs, clearly trying to imitate the fashion of that day. Aftermath was pop too, but it has charm, wit and still clearly a blues and soul influence, clearly the band is enjoying themselves. Buttons is just lame pop and they sound clueless. It's the one album I never ever listen to.

vinyl has made a slight comeback, things will never go back to the old days but it's become a bit of a hipster thing to do among alot younger music fans.
i like to think of it in term of a book, you can have a download on your ipad, kindle or whatever, you can have the paperback but the main thing is that hardcover.that vinyl is the source, the hardcover if you will.
that's why i complained so much about the generic cover,it's never too late to make something iconic.do you see that giant wall with the cover of some girls that was at desert trip? iconic-

having said that,i cannot freakin wait to hear this album.

I've been careful, only listened to clips of each once. I like listening to the entire album together, before I wear myself out on any of the tracks. Back in the good old days, I can recall already have played Start Me Up about 1000 times before the Tattoo You album was out, and was already tired of it by then!

This is awful because it means that I have to come out of denial and admit that I am in the Radio 2 demographic. Have been trying to avoid that since the 70s.

Any song from BUTTONS is better than anything from that 1986 vomit plug of an album, which has zero outstanding anything.

Yesterday's Papers is a heavy tune that's got a lot going on in it that requires a brain to understand. It makes sense that HMS can't understand it.
My Obsession kicks.
Back Street Girl is a timely ballad.
Connection is outstanding.
She Smiled Sweetly is a great leer.
Cool, Calm And Connected is outstanding.
All Sold Out is a hint of the future ala 2000 Man, Parachute Woman, Stray Cat etc and is outstanding but HMS wouldn't know that anyway.
Please Go Home is stellar rock'n'roll and probably the most outstanding track on the LP.
Who's Been Sleeping Here is hilariously Dylan yet rockin'.
Complicated is a good rocker.
Miss Amanda Jones - it's been used in movies because it ROCKS; outstanding.
Something Happened To Me Yesterday is another hilarious Dylan kick that's a good bit of the mentality of what was happening then.

Any thoughts does Keith play lead on any of these songs? Looks like Ronnie on Ride "em On Down plus Clapton on Good Thing and Can't Quit You.
