To me since 1994, the stadium sound is much clearer than in door shows, even sitting far back sounds fine.
78, 81 and 89 were rough outdoors.
97 was amazing outdoors
99 in Philly in doors best concert sound ever for me
05 Hershey best outdoor sound ever and best outdoor recording
02 05 06 very good out door sound in general

Worst ever sound ac 89 ac 06 , 02 in door first Union Philly
Loudest for me 05 in door Philly
Lowest sound jfk 78 and jfk 81 first show

I'll sit anywhere . I've been in row 2 and I've been in the back row. It's all good. Each show different, different perspectives , site lines , screen views. I'd rather sit on top of the stadium in row 1 than on the floor in row 5.
As long as people don't clap, sing, whistle , shout or yell out, a great recording is all I need to enjoy the concert and re live it forever

I feel the smaller the place, the more responsibility an artist takes for authenticity and a reality not hidden by extravaganza and big show dynamics.
The more direct contact with an audience of visible fellow breathing humans instead of a swirling mass of greys and black and white...it don't look real to them...

1978 was just six stadium shows.

Nine:

Philadelphia
Cleveland
Buffalo
Chicago
New Orleans
Boulder
Anaheim x2
Oakland

And how many smaller shows? Weren't there still more stadiums than smaller venues?

16:
Lakeland, Florida, Civic Center
Atlanta, Georgia, Fox Theater
Passaic, New Jersey, Capitol Theater
Washington, D.C., Warner Theater
New York City, New York, Palladium
Hampton, Virginia, Coliseum

Memphis, Tennessee, Mid-South Coliseum
Lexington, Kentucky, Rupp Arena
Detroit, Michigan, Masonic Temple Auditorium
St. Paul, Minnesota, Civic Center Arena
St. Louis, Missouri, Kiel Opera House

Wow, I didn't realize there were that many smaller venues in 1978. I stand corrected!

deardoctortake1 - "To me since 1994, the stadium sound is much clearer than in door shows, even sitting far back sounds fine."

I've really noticed that too. There were two concerts where I had the worst seats - all the way at the far end and in the nosebleeds at Giants Stadium in 2002 and 2006 and the sound was absolutely perfect, especially in 2006. And despite the far seats, with the screens and being able to take in the full spectacle of the staging, they were great memories for me.

From what I can tell it looks like they played at 15 smaller venues in 1978.

Oh. Duh. Didn't see that someone else had responded. 16.

OK, seems like the stadium gigs got the most press that I saw in 1978 but there were more smaller venues than I remembered hearing about. Seems like the Stones were keeping the press at a distance that year due to Keith's legal woes.

Well for time of the band on the stage - I prefer clubs or arenas.

BUT: At a stadium gigs I had my perfect days out. Everywhere in the world.

1. Even you have no ticket or need some additional for friends - go early, you will find some family-fathers who are desperate to ged rid of their tickest because they forgot grandmothers birthday, their daughters wedding etc. when they bouht them 3 month ago.
2. STAY!! Don´t go away. Look around. Meet some other Stones Fans. Chat with them.
Watch the trucks coming in and out to bring additional stuff for competing the stage. And if you are alone that day, no freinds or family with you - Ask for a "Helpers Job"! The crews always hire helpers for everything around the stage.
With a little luck you are suddenly a member of the roadie crew.
Happened to me in Barcelona 2003.
3. But even without this luck - hours will run fast around the venue until gates open and showstart. You will see and experience so much.
4. So again: Go to stadium gig venues around noon - you will have the time of your life.

I HATE stadium shows because I do not pay $500 to be pushed, shoved, drenched in beer and otherwise ANNOYED by " fans" who come JUST TO PARTY! If you are a serious fan of the Stones' music and are not going out to get drunk, you prefer arenas. I agree with you, HOPKINS, and I have been to quite a few HUGE stadium shows...as you get a bit older you have no patience for the distractions that go along with Stadium shows. Weather can also mess with you when you're outdoors, obviously. I think people are just more NUTS when in huge crowds. I was almost stomped to death in Philly with a crowd of 90,000..it is NOT FUN! Bring on MSG, and similar venues, PLEASE!

Ideally, you can have a good time and be serious about the music at a huge stadium show. Maybe I'm lucky that I've had mostly good, fun experiences at almost all 6 of the Stones stadium shows I've been to. Only exception, the kind that supports mickschix loathing of stadium shows was at 2006, Giants Stadium where some drunk right behind me alternated between yelling incomprehensible babblings to Mr. Jagger and then puking on his shoes. Alas...I love live Stones music so much that it didn't bother me as much as it might have under non-Stones circumstances.
