Would rather pass YaYa´s than Shine A Light...
It would not have been released officially if it was that bad. At least it would have been heavily overdubbed, which it isnt to my knowledge, so it seems MJ who´s known to be very critical liked it.

The performances are vital and full of energy - and the playing/singing is damn sure better than Hampton for instance. God knows I love Shine A Light!

I would recommend to buy it - if only for completing the collection. I fully agree with the Rolling-Stones-Magazine-guy.

And Keith´s playing isnt lousy, it comes directly from the heart of Rock n Roll, deep and pure. The sounds he produces on SAL are Rock n Roll-magic.

HMS,
have you ever thought of working in the Stones promotion department? I honestly can't think of any better person able to promote career lowpoints like Dirty Work and Shine A Light as holy grails of Rock 'n Roll. Seriously!

Varied strong opinions here, are the 'can't stand it' folks
bootleg collectors/ secret computer file of RS unofficial live internationally shared by hard core fans? I don't possess the skill or patience to tweek (yet) into this area,
So, rare live gems in my avail. audio collection, and the band/music itself pretty damn good.
My setlist:
JJF
Some Girls (c'mon, this is a rare blast)
JMI (she doesn't @#$%& know me!)
Tumbling Dice (never, ever a warhorse to me, take it every time)
Undercover (rocks man)
Little T&A (for all you dissin' Keith here, knock it off and hear him perform this: KEITH)
Shine A Light (because, it is SAL, but depressing somehow and not a good end, so)
Sympathy For The Devil (see TD explanation)
^^ yep that's all GOLD to me.
As for the DVD, yes I've seen it a few times, but I'm more of a listener than a watcher, sometimes Jagger's torso can be distracting ;-)

I´m honestly not trying to pull someone´s leg. Just like DW and SAL. But sure cannot understand how anyone can be left unsatisfied with the Biggest-Bang-set.

How the hell did A Bigger Bang get roped into this? A Bigger Band and Four Flicks illustrate how much better the Stones got at delivering their own concerts. Scorcesee added nothing to their legacy. I find Shine A Light unwatchable except for Buddy Guy and maybe As Tears Go By for the sheer rarity of it, and to see the ravages of age. (And now it's ten years later!).

A Bigger Bang has some great footage in Argentina, a fantastic Midnight Rambler in China, and of course Bob Wills is Still the King in Zilker Park. In fact I was quite happy with 4 Flicks and A Bigger Bang until they started releasing the REALLY good stuff from the 60s, 70s and 80s. I haven't watched either Flicks or Bang in quite a while now. But I never get the urge to play Shine A Light.

I've always like SAL - recently when revisiting it I finally gave the CD a blast again (mostly it's the DVD I watch) and really enjoyed it. I honestly think it's quite a cracking performance on many of the songs; not in the same league as Ya Ya's but on 'Some Girls', 'Undercover'(love the guitars!), 'She Was Hot' (got one of the best reactions both times I saw it in cinema) and perhaps the highlight - 'All Down the Line', they sound bloody great!

Terrible album. Like someone else here I saw the DVD, and was so turned off by it, I never bothered with audio disc. It represents everything that has gone in the crapper in Stonesland. The extra pressure of Scorsese's cameras probably only made matters worse. Everything felt forced to me; even Keith gifting that guitar.
One poster mentions that if it was that bad then Jagger, the perfectionist would not have released it. But that is part of the problem: he is the one with the ultimate say-so, yet he is way out of touch.

A funny thing is, that at first I was rather positively surprised by Christina Aguilera,
of whom I'd never heard any music before. I thought she had a rather powerful contribution
to Live with me.
But after listening to it again (it had been a while, I must admit) I have to admit
that her pointless screaming over the instrumental break has a rather annoying effect.
Maybe I should watch the DVD again to see if she makes up for that with visible qualities
(I don't actually remember these, though I can strongly recall the visuals of Lisa,
so I guess it was disappointing).

Just as long as the guitar plays, let it steal your heart away

Just finished to listen again to this album and it's great from start to finish.
Possibly the first time they put out a live album made from a single show (November 1st show) and to me that's what makes this album better than say Live Licks, No Security, Flashpoint...
Put back I'm Free between As Tears Go By and Some Girls and it makes the flow even better. They should have labelled the 4 last tracks as "bonus track", it would have made things clearer.

i think shine a light has the more variable setlist than any other stones live album and most of the songs are delivered with energy and enthusiasm.

i always find it hard to rank live albums than studio albums but shine a light is close to being the best of the later bunch.

i still love yaya,s and love you live from the earlier days although the setlists on these tend to be less varied.

shine a light also dosent flood the album with a lot of late 60,s songs, and gives the mid 60,s a bit of recognition which most other stones live albums never seem to do.

I just re watched the show bc my girlfriend wanted to see it. I was saying "Oh it's terrible, it's crap etc etc". But maybe back then I was in a different frame of mind; Stones overload; not enough gratitude.
I got to say (except for Scorsese) I thought it was fantastic. Many high points, especially the middle of the set.
That extra bar in 'Champagne and Reefer' did wreak havoc though.

I have always thought it to be a pretty good release. I like the rendition of She Was Hot, where Mick and Lisa’s interplay is dynamite. Actually, she’s pretty hot, throughout hot smiley

People slagging off this release should be happy and thankful we got Scorsese mixing things up with Stones. Or is it still 1973 for ya? What ya gonna say when they're all dead and gone?!?!
Only downside is that everything is tuned a half-step down so it's a nightmare to play along with.

I'm bloody thankful and happy we got this excellent film smileys with beer

SAL is ok. It just never grabbed me. I think I have watched it twice. She was Hot was very enrgetc getting that odd crown going. If I am correct wasnt this a hand picked or paid crowd? Should have been so much better on Scorcese's part. The whole thing felt off.

To be honest I am very casual with anythng post 1994 live.

I watched it yesterday afternoon. It was my birthday, lost my wife a year ago and felt somewhat lonely and I thought: I put on a couple of Stones concerts to make my own party!
I have a huge television which makes it look like a small movietheater if I'm watching something on it, so what better than the two Stones movies which are made for the cinema:
I first watched "The Stones At The Max" and after that this "Shine a Light" movie and watching it you realy have and get the feeling that you are with them on the stage. You can see every rimple it's almost scary.
I think as a movie experience SAL is great. Did I have hear them better play those songs? Ofcourse there are better versions, but that doesn't mean it's bad, or even worthless, well not to me anyway.
I got in a fine and happy mood and life is not so bad after all.

Shine A Light feels more like watching a movie spectacle than a real Stones concert. The performance is also a bit rushed and nervous.

Shepherds Bush '99 in comparsion feels more like a natural Stones concert and the performance is more appealing.

I honestly love the tone of the album. The guitars are right up front, punchy, and crisp. To me it's up there with their best, which I know for some is blasphemous. To me, in terms of live Stones albums, there's Ya Yas, Rock And Roll Circus, Stripped, Shine A Light, Brussels Affair. All the others either came out too recently that I just don't get around to music as much as I used to (El Mocambo, LA Friday, etc.), some of which I'm sure are great but sorry they just waited too long to release that other priorities have taken over. Or they were albums I never cared for (Love You Live, Still Life, etc.).

To me, Shine A Light is great modern Stones. It's got an edge, it sounds full of energy, and it's real. I TOTALLY understand why others wouldn't like it. I can completely understand people hating Keith's guitar playing (if I remember correct, the guitar solo on Sympathy is maybe one of the worst played on an official release), and just not liking their sound. But personally I really like it. Way more than other modern releases like Live Licks or No Security, which sound so overdubbed, edited to pieces, or just tinny in sound quality. IMO, She Was Hot, All Down The Line, Some Girls, Just My Imagination, Far Away Eyes, Brown Sugar, and As Tears Go By are stellar performances. I also personally really like all 3 guest songs, I think they add a lot. But totally understand if people didn't like Christina or Jack White. Definitely acquired tastes.

Overall, I found it a successful release when I'd kinda given up on them. IMO the worst part about it is the completely manufactured "we don't know what the setlist is gonna be till the second they walk out" in the film/I think the beginning of the soundtrack. Why that was even necessary to pretend is beyond me, I guess to make people think the band is still "dangerous". It's a hand picked crowd, they can still play a great show while being a royalty legacy act. So over the top. Same with that "lighting effect" discussion. Its so unbelievably laughable.

It's kind of a mediocre mess. Please tell me what the hell Martin Scorcese adds to this? Keith plays better now than he did on SAL. One of the problems is their own video release, The Biggest Bang, is much better than SAL. It seems like Keith was in bad shape, but they couldn't get out of doing this project.

Aguilera was good, Jack White was unfortunately bad. Buddy Guy was good. I never watch it. I had to look through my Stones DVD section to see if I even still own it. I do, but I watched it one time, when I first got it.

It was a good idea that didn't work, and should have been shelved. I have no desire to ever watch it again. It's hardly been mentioned since. Just another throw away Greatest Hits package where even the 'rarities' were done better on other live releases.
