OT: 1966 greatest year for pop/rock albums?

Interesting read re three albums. There must've been more released in 1966 to suggest it was the greatest year for pop albums. For moi, Pet Sounds is very overrated and Blonde On Blonde overblown, but we all have our likes and dislikes.

the stars were in alignment...

If we had anything approaching any one of these albums today...well, we don't.

Not that good a year by that list. Except for Sgt Pepper none of those on the list are really that highly rated in the history of Rock.

1965-66 was a highpoint for both British and American pop. 1971 or '72 was probably the best year for rock. Think of all the great albums released in those years. It's mind blowing!

True, but if you add Jimi Hendrix's Are You Experienced and Cream's Disraeli Gears you might say it was a good year.

Well...1972 was a hell of a year.
For me 1965 and the following year or two were magnificent years for singles.
In the beginning of the 70's the album had developed to a full-fledged format.

Face To Face, Aftermath, Revolver, A Quick One, Fresh Cream.

A fabulous year!

I would like to mention that lame album by Manfred Mann called As Is. It has it`s moments.

Starting in 1966 (or so) and ending in 1972 (or so) has always seemed like the most amazingly creative, fertile and greatest period for pop and rock music to me, even though I discovered the music years later.

I have often wondered the reason and tend to believe it was related to both the proliferation of drugs like weed and LSD in the music industry and the huge social changes that drew the younger generation to the music and lifestyle changes. You can't underestimate the important role Rubber Soul and Revolver played, imo.

I agree...but I think you have to consider the fact that the Beatles were building up to those albums. And the fact that the Beatles had made an impact on western culture before those albums (following the Kennedy assassination). The Beatles had two films and world tours during 1964-1965, and had already developed their songwriting by the time of the Help! album with songs such as Ticket To Ride, You've Got To Hide You're Love Away and Yesterday, (all before Rubber Soul, etc).

It had a lot to do with demographics....Between 1966 and 1972 the first baby boomers in England and North America went from 20 to 26 years of age.The peak baby boom year was 1955...in 1972 they were all 17...dazed and confused!

I concur with Come On, 1977 and up to about 1983 were pretty incredible as well, for the Stones, Bowie and just about everyone else, Punk, Disco, New Wave, Electronica.

Fantastic stuff.

Yeah that may explain the popularity of the music but I was referring more to the quality and amazing and great changes to the music itself that happened during that period. Clearly some mind expansion happened that has a big influence on the music. Is it a coincidence that after Satanic Majesties the Stones came out with their best output? I think there is a definite correlation.

There is a magazine on the racks from one of the classic rock publishers, Mojo or someone on the year 1966 and I looked through it and it seems all British which is good in itself, I thought maybe it'd have the Doors or some American bands in it but I didn't see them.

'66 was a great year for English football; Eric was born.

Had to throw that in without glaring up the page with graphics, one can see it for themselves.

Or how about these guys: [media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com]

I don't know if the Doors were '66 or '67 actually.

Blue Magoos, that one song they do is excellent. "We ain't (got nothing yet)"

I've been saying it for years that '66 was the best year. Look at the Top 10 all year long from the States and the UK: an incredible batch of great songs. 1967 and 1965 are neck-and-neck for the second spot. I, myself, have a fondness for 1973, as that's when I kind of first discovered AM radio, and Goat's Head Soup.

Maybe I'm biased but I'll take Aftermath over any of those three albums mentioned. First Stones album with all Jagger/Richard songs and Brian's magic all over it.

Aftermath is definitely one of my favourite Stones albums, but to say it's considerably better than Face To Face, Revolver, or even Fresh Cream, might be a stretch, imo.

WARNING:
I gave it a spin last night. There ain`t one decent track on it. A bunch of crap, really. From Allmusic.com:

"Like many mid sixties albums, As Is seems to be a collection of songs, rather than a complete entity like Pet Sounds or Sgt. Pepper."
