BEST - Through the Past Darkly with the original Octagonal cover; although Sticky Fingers (original working zipper) was a great concept/title.

WORST - Tough to pick, as there have been so many bad covers, but Dirty Work, with those 80's jackets, gets my vote (unless it was intended as a joke, in which case it's the best).

Do you mean art work or a number originally done by someone else?

I really didn't make myself clear, what I meant was the best and worst version of a Stones song done by another artist.

Having said that the cover art and the Stones doing another artists songs could be interesting threads on their own.

But...

Stones may be one of the toughest acts to cover;
imitations seem to be more sucessful. I believe its because
one of the ultimate strengths of the Stones is the performance.

TSOOL almost built a career on creating sonic atmospheres similar to the Stones in classic years ab 1967-1973, and eventually became rock vet´s themselves (now they are 'somewhere between VL & Bridges' or maybe 'post-Steel Wheels').

Grank Funk did a real nice version of Gimme shelter.

On Better Be Good To Me, Tina Turner does a fun Mick imitation when she sings/says "Stand, face to face..." Reminds me so much of Mick live in 75/76!

Youngblood Hart's "Moonlight Mile" on the "Paint It, Blue" CD is perfect...

meanwhile, I've never heard the Stones themselves perform "Satisfaction" live in a way that made it worthwhile...(does covering oneself fit the topic?)

Britney is a logical choice. She's the champ at ruining great songs. Just listen to her version of "I like rock 'n roll". Pathetic.

But I kind of liked Guns 'n Roses' version of "Sympathy for the Devil" (soundtrack "Interview with the Vampire"). The Black Crowes did "Torn & Frayed" last spring and that was ok too.

This is turning into a very interesting thread for me ... many covers I was not aware of ... I didn't know Vanilla Ice and Brittney had covered Satisfaction (probably better not to know some things!)

Lot's of stuff I had forgotten about and have revisited and some I'm still trying to find.

One thing I came across was that Nashville Pussy or a band purporting to be them had many songs from "Exile" out htere in cyberspace which sounded awful and out of tune so I wonder if anybody knows anything about this. I actually like most of their recorded stuff so I'm not sure this is actually them.
