I just remembered that when Britney covered Joan Jett's "I Love Rock and Roll", she was asked in an interview why she decided to cover it. Her reply? "Because I just LOVE Pat Benatar!!!" Good job, Brit.

Are you maybe thinking about the band Pussy Galore? They covered the entire Exile album. The band was led by Jon Spencer, who later created the Blues Explosion band.

I got to admit, even though I'm a Deadhead, listening to their cover of Satisfaction can be a little painful, the Grateful Dead. The Melanie version of Ruby Tuesday is really sweet!

Yes, I'm sorry it was Pussy Galore ... what did you think of their versions? I thought they were way outta tune and sloppy (maybe that was on purpose I dunno) thanks for setting me straight ...

I agree with you hutz, very raw sounding and a little too primitive.

And Billy Joel in "You May Be Right" when he says "aw, don'y try to SAAaaave me..." another Mick job!

I always thought this would be a good cover for the Stones to do, also "Train In Vain" by the Clash.

I think Let it Bleed is the best cover.

Steel Wheels is kinda bland.

Taj Mahal and James Cotton "HTW"
Lacky Peterson "Under My Thumb"
Aretha Franklin "JJF"
Johnny Winter "JJF"

Britneys "Satisfaction" made me want to vomit. I thought Devo's was kinda cool though.

Anyone heard of Steve Earle. He's done the greatest versions of Dead Flowers, Sweet Virginia and Before they make me run I've ever heard, except for the Stones themselves!

Ohhhh. Cover SONGS....(I am dumb as a post).

Best: Mercy Mercy (Maybe).

Worst: Don't really know.

Sorry Niklas, must protest:

Townes Van Zandt's "Dead Flowers" trumps all! (From the live covers album "Road Songs"--1997(?))

Townes' version can also be heard in the final bit of "The Big Lebowski" starring Jeff Bridges and John Goodman.

No disrespect to Steve Earle, though...(actually Townes was a huge influence on him as Earle always points out).

You'll love that "Dead Flowers." So soulful...

And let me reiterate my plug for "Youngblood" Hart's "Moonlight Mile" with just dobro and Strat. Rivals the Stones' version.

I have to Ditto Towne's Dead Flowers... the song was like it was written for Townes and his "rear view mirror" approach to life on the road.

Maybe even better was Willie Nelson and Keith doing Dead Flowers together on Willie's Stars and Guitars CD....That was an awesome version, so you can halfway call that a cover by Willie Nelson.

I love Johnny Winter's blistering Jumpin' Jack Flash

Motley Crue with Street Fightin' Man... Mick Mars just grinds the guitar chords so well on their version (would be better if Vince wasn't singing, lol)...

Loved Bob Dylan doing "Brown Sugar" on tour a couple years back too

As a takeoff from the prior post about Willie Nelson & Keith Richards' great collaboration on Dead Flowers...

How about Keith and Willie doing "We Had It All", the incredible sentimental love song by Waylon Jennings and Billy Joe Shaver...

"We Had it All" rarely fails to tear my heart out (it's on Jennings/Shavers' masterpiece "Honky Tonk Heroes" CD)...

When Keith did it I just thought.... another example of how in touch this guy is with great music.

Best Stones cover? Still waiting for someone to cover the Stones well.

Worst Stones cover? Who else but .. the Stones themselves.

Flowers is the album, 'My Girl' (Temptations) is the cover tune. Listen and see why the Stones considered most of these songs work tracks, NOT album material (Mick, can you please sing a little MORE off key?!).

[Note: I do own and love Flowers, but still ...]

Honorable Mention: 'Emotional Rescue.' This MUST have started out as a cover of 'Rescue Me' by Fontella Bass (complete with falsetto by Mick) - then Mick must have decided he could make it into a 'new' song. He made it into a new song, alright ... Wow.

But this Sunday in Beantown, OH YES!!! It's on, baby bubba!!!

A really great cover is Joan Baez' version of No Expectations, one of the truly great, under-appreciated Stones songs, IMO.
