Jazz drummers and rock and roll drummers are, for the most part, like apples and oranges. I could list my favorite heirloom apple varieties, and I would not include any oranges on that list. Including the likes of Buddy Rich on a list with Charlie Watts and Keith Moon, to me, just doesn't make much sense. That said, there are just too many great drummers out there, in both categories, to determine who is the best. Most of the drummers mentioned above are all terrific. But sometimes a player's touch just strikes the right chord, and you think-- Yeah, that guy plays those drums like they should be played. For me, Gabe Jarrett, son of Jazz pianist Keith Jarrett, absolutely left me amazed after a live performance. But I'm not going to try to convince you he's better than your favorite. Rather than scrolling through lists, I am more interested in what makes a drummer great for you all. For me, GJ just played those drums like the musical instrument they are, exquisite buzz rolls carefully tossed in at appropriate transitions (he even did them on his cowbell!), and intricate polyrhythms played with such finesse not for the sake of complexity, but for the sake of the song. That's what makes a drummer great to me. The drummer has to do his part to make the whole song/ band sound great. (That's why I love Charlie, incidentally).. Drums are not to keep time, as I see it, but to drive a groove and accent moments in that groove.

I think Tate said it very well, above.

glad to know about Gabe Jarrett, thanks!

and on the topic of touch, polyrhythmic finesse, movement of the groove, and pocket in general.. I have to mention a kid I saw play with John Scofield once a few years ago, amazing then..

Adam Deitch...he was a kid then, now plays with Lettuce..

lots of great drummers in local bands and regional touring bands.

when you see them play it can be amazing. another is Lisa Pankratz,
with Dave Alvin.

and I'll mention too- hope he doesn't mind, but he's got great feel and plays so well for the song-

erwin, drummer for us in the IORR project..yes indeed. thumbs upthumbs up
