its a fantastic song but like so many other great songs the stones made, they also made it unradio friendly which in my opinion has held the stones back a lot. i love the stones, have since 1987 but what i hate about them is the fact they have to be so vulgar at times, its not clever, it does them no favours and actually makes them appear backward at times. the stones were and still are a very clever band when they put thier minds to it, but creating great songs and making it unreleasable as a single is stupid and possibly one reason the beatles have outsold them.

Whats vulgar in one country is fully acceptable in another...

There's nothing vulgar about this track as far as I am concerned.

Mathijs

I don't think that a song named "een drol op de vlucht" would have a lot of chance in the Netherlands either.

This track was in the charts for 7 weeks, reaching number 3.

There are only two songs on Exile that do not have the song's title in the lyrics.. They would be Turd on the Run and Casino Boogie. And I have always thought of the both songs as sort of abstract poems. Where they use the words as an instrument (sort of a vocal harp).

I do not look at Exile as a collection of individual songs on album, I see it as a full corse meal and that's why when I listened to it in the past I rarely only listened to one song or even one side, it was usually two sides or all four.

I always love to read my fellow Stones freaks interpretation and the ALO reference was pretty interesting. It's kind of like trying to figure out a dream.

I listened to Turd 3 times last night. One time overall, 2nd time the melody guitar, 3rd time the vocals.

It's a monster of a track. A brilliant mess of intimidation, fantastic lyrics and a great punishing chugging riff run. As Ronnie said, it's great: DINNNNN A NOWW NOWWWWWWW....

How come you dont like Hold On To Your Hat? Not so much difference, except that Hat is clearly the better one.

I have to disagree. Hold on to Your Hat is Stones rote. Just fast and loud for the sake of being loud. Turd on the Run is a barrel house blues where they all are playing their hearts out. Just the harmonica alone makes it a go to track for blues enthusiasts. Hold on to Your Hat has no subtleties, no hint of danger or mayhem, just a standard generic later day Stones song with dreadful 80's production. Turd is an amazing showcase of the Stones worshiping Americana.

There are a large number of differences (overall sound, lyrics, voice, harmonica), but one obvious difference is that the basic driving guitar in "Turd On The Run" has a very clever groovy rhythm few players could pull off, whereas "Hat" could be played by any average "loud" grungy rock band from the 80s and the 90s.

Turd on the run is a scene in one of the best movies ever made: Exile on Main street. Every scene is crucial.

Hold on to your hat is a weak song on a weak album.

I love both Turd On The Run and Hold On To Your Hat though I don't see any particular comparison. Turd is the better of the two because it is so quintessentially Stones.

Hold On To Your Hat is pure bunk. Turd On The Run is a brilliant blues monster.

Hold On To Your Hat is one of the very rare highlights on Steel wheels, it has that kind of Dirty-Work-Feeling that is missing on the mostly over-polished SW-album. It is pure speed, pure fun and it´s mean and dirty. Most bands try for years and years to create such a song but never come to a result. Indeed, any Rock-band would be lucky to bust out a song like Hold On To Your Hat.

I guess many of us hear a very different song. I listened to it before writing this post, and it just is plain boring. Sounds like a Stones by numbers track. The version of the Steel Wheels outtakes boot is better, but not by much. At least on the outtakes boot you can hear some cool piano and the drums don't sound like they are being played on a trash can.

The song just doesn't hold much interest. The lyrics aren't really worth repeated listening, let alone singing. The lead guitar is just a screaming mess of overplaying with no really passion or finesse, just loud playing trying to sound like a hard rock band. If anything, Hold on to Your Hat is trying to sound like Rip this Joint, rather than Turd on the Run, and it fails at that as well. Rip this Joint is a great barrel house blues based road rocker.

In case you haven't noticed, since you are mired in a cave with only DIRTY WORK and the one track from STEEL WHEELS that you think is so outstanding, not one band in the world has ever attempted to emulate Hold On To Your Hat because it SUCKS.

Like DIRTY WORK.

Sure sounds like Mick Taylor on slide on this song, most evident at 2:20. Richards never played like that. I did an EQ boost at 271 Hz to get a little more definition, and I'm hearing an electric slide guitar.

The quest continues to reacquire Taylor's lost credits...

Which slide guitar? I only hear two open G-guitars by Keith. The main rhythm guitar and the one which comes in with the subtle licks. Those are not unusual for Keith when he plays single-string licks in open G.

It's a slide guitar, listen in headphones at 2:20.

Just listened: no slide guitar. There's a 'clean' guitar in the middle doing a single note descending melody amongst the haze of guitars chugging away but there's no slide.

That's correct, and Keith is playing that one.

Turd is one of my faves on EOMS. It's in the class of songs with Rocks Off, Casino Boogie, All Down The Line, Sweet Virginia and Soul Survivor in terms of a kind of intimidating rhythm that they were so good at achieving back then.

The second guitar sounds like a combination of fingers and slide. At exactly 2:22 and 2:24 there are lower notes (sounds lower in timbre than the G string) after the descending what I believe is a E-D-C-D-C run. An open hammer-on can sound like a slide, but this has a distinct descent on one string then a slide on a lower string.

Yes, that 1986 pathetic excuse of an album is contract filler.
