"A Bigger Bang" released ten years ago today
Posted by: Pietro ()

"A Bigger Bang" was released on September 6, 2005.

Seem about a hundred years ago...

Will we have to wait another ten years for the next Rolling Stones album?

When this record came out I was in a daze from Katrina, on the run, with hardly anything to my name except the clothes on my back, what I had in a bag from being on tour and my guitar and amp.

I never did get the Rolling Stone magazine they were on the cover of. Strangely, for a while, that really bummed me out. I never did figure out why. I eventually forgot about it.

Listening to A BIGGER BANG from their website, I couldn't really get into it. I was in the midst of figuring out what I was going to do because of Katrina, like finding a new truck and finding my friends. Trying to find out if anyone had died. I spent most of the time drinking gallons of beer to settle my mind.

I can't remember when I got my copy of it but it wasn't the day it came out, a few weeks later, probably in October. Once having it and listening to it in the van (the band bought a copy as well) and driving around in my 'new' truck that fall back and forth from Fairhope, AL to New Orleans and across the lake to various places after getting back down to the Gulf Coast from Lansing, MI via Pensacola, FL after being in Fairhope for a couple days to rest up from the wack amount of driving we did after the last gig to 4 days later (we were in Carbondale, IL when Katrina hit LA/MS), the album grew on me and I got to really liking it. It was fresh and aggressive, it seemed uplifting at a bizarre time in life and it was a lot meaner than BRIDGES TO BABYLON. BTB - how long had it been? It took me a while to let that one sink in as well. ABB was more of a treat than what any previous Stones release had been. My life was a mess and it just wasn't so important, the new Stones album. But I did like some of it.

I didn't care for Streets Of Love. To this day it blows. Oh No Not You Again was just... eh (there was some video, from Rolling Stone perhaps, earlier in the year that showed them playing the song in Mick's house and it had an energy to it that reminded me of SOME GIRLS ala When The Whip Comes Down - boy was that a let down!). Sweet Neo Con was funny. For about a week. Certain tracks stuck out and a core group of songs evolved to represent the 2005 Rolling Stones that still stand solid to this day.

Great album? Hell no. But it was a bit of a relief. And that can never be taken away. Perhaps I have a soft spot for it in my heart but it's really not a bad album by any means.

i assume a bigger bang referred to flatulence in their old age.

I was quite impressed after first listening. I liked the straight forward rockers and that there was little post-production. A very raw record. Unfortunately the sound-quality isn´t very impressive. Some really outstanding songs on it, better than first expectet after the disappointing BTB. Let Me Down Slow, Biggest Mistake are rather weak, these songs remind me of the four new songs on Forty Flicks, which I never was fond of - except Losing My Touch, which of course is Keith at his best.

Infamy and Streets of Love are horrible. Would have been nice if they had lifted Under The Radar on the album. It´s a solid rocking album, best one since Dirty Work, which of course is better than ABB. Best Tracks on ABB: Oh No Not You Again, Rough Justice, Rain Fall Down, Driving Too Fast, This Place Is Empty, It Wont Take Long, Look What The Cat Dragged In.

I think the album is a bit too long, remove a few weaker tracks and you have a very good album.

Easily the worst album the Stones have ever released (Dirty Work is a masterwork compared to ABB, My Girl a sonic treat). I like the intro to Rough Justice which lasts about 11 seconds but between the remaining 64 minutes and silence I always choose silence (or another record, even Primitive Cool).

I actually saw Keith do This Place Is Empty in Saitama in 2006. The performance itself was quite good but the song is a C- drag.

Disappointing and boring album. If this is all they can come up with, I'd prefer they wouldn't make any other album ever again.
From all the post Tattoo You albums, the only ones I can listen to entirely (occasionally, like once a year), is Undercover and Bridges to Babylon.
The rest have a few songs worth listening to, but too much boring rubbish in between.

Second that. In the middle of nowhere, some place between Jackson and Memphis. The difference - I had laptop and photo camera in the backpack.

What a decade it's been, since the release of A Bigger Bang.

We've had deluxe editions of Exile, Some Girls and Sticky Fingers with some real nice outtakes
and live versions.
We've had a handfull of DVD's with historic and present footage.
We've had the release of half a dozen live recordings from legendary concerts.
A world tour, continental tours.
(Auto)biographies of band members.
Two brand new songs.

And loads and loads of discussions on IORR about every single item.

Just as long as the guitar plays, let it steal your heart away

If you disregard the fact that few of the releases the last 15 years were newly recorded, it is probably the best decade since the 70s in terms of musical quality of the releases. But the 90s was more active and interesting.

"Rough Justice" (live versions are really great)
"Oh, No Not You Again" (a great Rolling Stones classic)
"Back of My Hand" (live versions were great)

to tell the truth IMO all other ABB songs are crap

I'd prefer to have some great new songs like "One More Shot" and "Doom and Gloom" or great cover songs like "Kansas City", "I"ll Go Crazy" or any other blues soul or countryesque covers from The Rolling Stones in the near future instead of a whole forced weak album

to be honest: If you chop down ABB to an EP it can be great (or at least a decent record)
(for example: Rough Justice, Let Me Down Slow, Back of My Hand and (maybe) She Saw Me Coming)

I'm a bit more optimistic...cut it down to 10 tracks including Under The Radar and you have a modern day classic.

Sweet Summer Sun and Sticky Fingers Live were newly recorded.

Two new live albums in two years is pretty good for the Stones smiling smiley

Infamy yeah!
Never found a good live version though >grinning smiley<
The clostest thing to a "good one" was played at the Vilvoorde rehearsals and released on a Rattlesnake boot.
