My picks of the best to worst songs on Some Girls:

1. When the Whip Comes Down
2. Just My Imagination
3. Respectable
4. Shattered
5. Lies
6. Before They Make Me Run
7. Some Girls
8. Far Away Eyes
9. Miss You
10. Beast of Burden

It's tough to say "worst" but that's how lists go. For the record I don't think there is really a bad song on the album.

See, this is where it gets so strange. I have been a fan of the band since the 60’s, and I rate Beast of Burden as one of Top Five tracks the Stones have ever made. Ever. Everyone involved is absolute genius.

can't think of a better way to say what you did.

Makes me laugh when i think of Oldham asking Stu to leave the on stage line up because he didn't look cool enough.

That photo is the epitome of cool, a style he kept throughout his life.

The 6th Stone was probably the coolest of them all, Brian gets disqualified for being a #$%@

Yep, Whip is the one that has survived best as a live act. For some reason. It was good even in 2003:

It is pretty good, except for the bridge, which Ronnie plays just fine but...

I got sick of BOB for a while but the past few years it's back to not being skipped, LP or edit version. It is brilliant, one of their best ballads even though it's not quite a ballad I suppose. Great guitaring.

The live B-side from 1981 stinks but on the VOODOO tour they did a fantastic version of it.

Those of you who had their musical awakening at the end of the 70s would possibly think so, but mind you; Some Girls was some kind of comeback album at the time of release; still life in those old bones and that sort of thing. A nice nod, but their heyday was behind them.

chuck leavell sucks at standing beside a van.

I'm not an expert on vans. Didn't even know about the brand Commer (English, made in Luton, apparently). But I must say it's ugly. Winning ugly, perhaps? Even a Trabant looks like a beauty compared with this one.

Personally, I would love to have a van like that . I would paint it dark green and name it "The Incredible Hulk".smiling smiley
I recall being driven around London in one them during a night of partying with some friends, and then making our way back to Guildford (where I was living) very late and a bit worse for wear.

Van Morrison's real first name is George, he took the name Van because he was the van driver for the then Them. Not need to fact check.......

LIB is honest in that it reflects the fact the band no longer had Brian or a distinctive third man/voice. But, that's what I don't like about it. There's something missing. The sound and feel of The Rolling Stones as a four piece... with guests.

That pretty much nails it. Some kind of emptiness

Which allowed Keith to focus and deliver some of his most fantastic work.

Sure, but Keith times 5 isn't The Rolling Stones.

And of course, almost like every other thread about an LP, this has me listening to SOME GIRLS again, out of context, plus Everything Is Turning To Gold and the good tracks from the silly deluxe issue - putting more SG tracks into playlists.

I've always found "Beast of Burden" to be too tinkling. Like Mozart. The Some Girls album is Beethoven like. Thundering, loud, and hard. I never really cared much for the song. But I love Beethoven. You have to know a little about classical music to understand what I'm talking about.

I adore the studio version of "Beast of Burden." I also like Mozart. Oddly enough, if I were to find a Stones equivalent to Beethoven, I would pick "Time Waits for No One" and "Moonlight Mile." Those thunder at me with natural beauty that suggests there is more to mathematics than my dumbed-down education could convey. I make no apologies for my ignorance.

I just had a listen to the studio version of "When The Whip Comes Down" after all these years, on Youtube. I found very little in that song for me. It would have been a commercial disaster if played live.

Live it's the most Jumpin' Jack Flash-esque they've ever gotten!
