I still don't like the album. BUt the DVD of the 1975 Hammersmith show that came with the 30th anniversary box set is GREAT

Ummm......No, it's "Mary's dress waves"

I grew up in jersey in the 70's, heard the song thousands of times....

"Thunder Road"

The screen door slams
Mary' dress waves
Like a vision she dances across the porch
As the radio plays
Roy Orbison singing for the lonely
Hey that's me and I want you only
Don't turn me home again
I just can't face myself alone again
Don't run back inside
Darling you know just what I'm here for
So you're scared and you're thinking
That maybe we ain't that young anymore
Show a little faith there's magic in the night
You ain't a beauty but hey you're alright
Oh and that's alright with me

i.e. substitute "his career" for "it all"

Where's "I'm pulling outta here to win"? That is the most definitive statement of Thunder Road if that is the song we are talking a about. We all know the best lyric of Born to Run

Funny, I just read this article about "Born to Run" and the American Dream. Interesting read if you're into Bruce and this song and how it fit into the 1970s U-S-of-A. Must confess, BTR is not a fave Springsteen song of mine, nor is the BTR album. I prefer the Darkness album and a very under-rated Bruce album, Tunnel of Love, which is a great song cycle about men and women, life and love, dreams and what's real. But, I digress. Here's the BTR link.

Not sure how you conclude get that.....a minor point of parsing the opening lyrics to Thunder Road....the 1st of 8 cuts on the record Born to Run which was released 40 years ago today...seems to be more an issue with your reading comprehension as opposed to where the forum has gone.... winking smiley

Fountain admits to this omission and will purchase new glasses. But I am right about the final lyrics of Thunder Road.

Was the beginning of what would later become known as 'jock rock',

Jock rock???? Ummm...methinks not. There may have been any number of dumbas* athletically inclined young men and women who identified with Springsteen's sound and words back then, but, I would venture, they just got off on the sound and fury of Springsteen's music and shows back then like a number of us did with the sound and fury of the Stones back in their more youthful days. Jock rock, to me, would be Skynrd, ZZ Top, Guns and Poses and similar.

Haha didn't mean to upset you (!), but I don't agree at all about Skynyrd and Z.Z. Top being 'jock rock', although I suppose the definition can be subjective.

According to the Urban Dictionary:

"Term used to desribe the unintelligent, bloated, bombastic rock promulgated by Nickelback and their ilk".

And that's of what I was referring to regarding 'Born to Run' as the beginning of it all.
Don't want to trash the Boss's fans, just my opinion of his type of music.

I bought the 78-85 live box back in the day and the only songs I liked were the covers ("War" or "Raise Your Hand" ).
Okay I subsequently learnt to like "Because The Night" "Rosie" or "Adam..." but most of Brooce own material... confused smiley

Tell me doctor what's wrong with me?

I guess if jock rock, as noted above, is bombastic rock, U2 would have to be part of this category.
