Changing crew before the 50 & Counting-thing could have made sense, if needed.

But after 14 On Fire - why?

Why would it make any more sense before 50 & Counting?

It was a long time (more than five years) since they had toured. Many in the crew could have signed up for other bands etc.

They also stripped down the horn section and had fewer back up singers.

I don't know much about this, but recall that Alan Dunn had been Mick's PA for a long time, having started with the RS in the 60s. He is godfather to one of Mick's children.

He also was Mick's "Best Man" at Mick and Jerry's wedding.

Ah yes....the wedding that wasnt a wedding.
Naughty Mick.

Don't forget Ted Newman-Jones who was Keith's guitar tech in the 70s.
He is featured quite a bit in the excellent Barbara Charrone book, published around 1978, I think.

Speaking of Dave Rouze, who was a nice guy as well, I was disappointed to see that he had 'disappeared' as well from the Back line Crew. He escorted me to several Meet & Greets and was quite friendly.

I met Dave Rouze once in a shop near The Astoria when The Stones were due to play there.
I politely said hello and he talked to me as if I was something he had just scraped off his shoe.

In the TOTA's 1975 book (the big book full of photos) there is a photo of three of the main roadies/security - two huge guys and a slim one laid on sun loungers...I can't remember their names but it said something along the lines of , the thin guy could throw the two bigs guys around with ease.

Alan Dunn owns a bed & breakfast. A friend of mine (also a musician of some note) stayed there in 2012 and ended up hanging out and jamming with Mick Taylor.

Really?
Do you have any details please and thankyou.

I don't know if anyone here got to meet Tony Dunn who is Alan and Arnolds brother and also a big fan of The Rolling Stones.
Met him in New York in January 2003 when the band played two dates at MSG.
He was usually sitting in the sound desk area at the gigs he was at.
He is such a nice guy and got us hospitality when we met up again in Dublin, Twickenham and Wembley Arena. He also got me a ticket for Mick Taylor at 100 Club about the time of Astoria gig.
Unfortunately lost contact with him some years back and haven't run into him at any Stones gigs.
Anyone know him or know how he is getting on ?

That's great Rockman.
Over in Dublin me and my brother in law met up with Tony and his mates at their hotel for a few drinks the day before the first gig at The Point.
He got us hospitality at The Point gigs which was great.
We were going to both shows but Tony was just at the first.
He stayed in our hotel room overnight after The Point show after we were out in Temple Bar till the early hours.
He was travelling to another part of Ireland the next morning to meet up with his wife and family if I remember.
I remember Melvyn and the other names there. I remember a really nice guy and his wife who ran a pub called The Axe in Saffron Walden where most of the crowd lived.
Yeh ! He certainly is a great bloke with some great stories to tell. winking smiley

And what about Guitar Technicians?
What was the first tour that they used Guitar Technicians?.

Pierre de Beauport is I think since the 1989 Steel Wheel Tour the GT for Keith.
What about the others?
And has Charlie always the same Drum Technician?
Did Bill had a dedicated Bass Guitar Technician?

Mr.Fancyman

Pierre de Beauport is since Licks (and probably even since BTcool smiley the Captain of the everything going on on the stage. When it comes to shows he is the third power behind Mick and Keith.
He is guiding the roadies, telling the band when to go up, and even organizing and running the after show-parties of Mick or Keith.
Had the luck to be backstage full day at Barcelona 2003 - this guy is a lunatic.
Eyes everywhere, never getting tired, always in a manner of style.

David Rouse was the Mick's guitar guy in the 90s and 00s but I don't think I've seen him in the 10s

He is now working for Brad Paisley.

That would've been a blast! Should've asked to buy him a pint! I'm sure he would've agreed....man, the stories!!!

I only have one story about Pierre. I was 14, in a Winos concert in Madrid. I went to the venue many hours before the show for being in the first row. My best show, Keith awesome! But, once finished, I stayed there with my brother and Pierre came to the stage. I asked him for a pick and he got some. He watched me (I was just in front of him, no distance between me and the stage) and he threw them all far away. It was very dissapointing...

We met Pierre and some of his team as they left their hotel (not the band's hotel) on the day of the Pittsburgh gig in 2015. We had just had brunch - jsut a co-incidence we met.

He was very friendly, took a picture of us, and we had a chat about how the weather would impact the gig - he said it kept the band on their toes!

Pierre is the main man. Since nearly 20 years.
The Chairman of the Stones-Roadies.
Giving the advices on stage, who has to do what.
Directing the sound checks.
(and playing even by himself with other roadies when the Stones can´t appear for soundchecks)
Checking every tiny detail in the venue, front of stage, on the stage, backstage, riding around with his folding bike.
Organising the after-show parties of Mick.
Deciding which girls/boys/men/women of the audience will get invitations for those
parties (like in Circus Krone, Munich)
And even running the door/entrance of those parties (like "Lenbach" - Party of Mick given for Princess Gloria of Thurn and Taxis, after the Circus Krone gig)

So if for anything your Stones-heart desires on a tour - Pierre is your man.

Chuch Magee and Johnny Starbuck were real characters and nice guys and Johnny still is of course. Chuch came with Ronnie from The Faces as far as I am concerned and Johnny worked for Fleetwood Mac before the Stones. Alan Dunn still works for The Who I think.

A lot of things have changed since Pierre de Beauport took over as chief back line crew and not for the good, if you know what I mean. For example for the last Europe and USA tour all the old back line crew members were not asked to work for the tour. Obviously Pierre de Beauport was able to build his own little empire/universe within the Stones. I have heard of many things that do not shed a good light on him.

Johnny Starbuck used to be a roadie for Billy Preston. He first met The Stones during the joint Preston/Stones tour in 1975. And he has worked with The Rolling Stones ever since.

Johnny is a sweetheart of a guy. Met him several times on the street when the Stones were in town here and there and he always had time. He got me backstage a few times so I'll always be grateful.
