I'm Going Home (Ten Years After) always gets me

at 5:29 Lee's able to combine the speed and precision of fluid jazz playing with the raw dynamic burst of the blues that's reminds me of what Richard achieves in SFTD, and yet its further sustained. I'm not sure that longer is better with a solo (as SFTD makes plain), but I do love this song.

Similarly, . . .

Crazy good version of Woodchopper's Ball, where Lee's jazz playing is both tight and raw, maintaining a knife's edge while nailing phrase after phrase.

And one that's always stunned me: For Sephora, by The Rosenberg Trio

A wonderful instance of technique married with emotion and melody.

Overall, while I've got total respect for the studio solo, I think the bulk of my favourites are all from live performances.

People who enjoy Taylor's «out of the box-playing» will probably like some of this as well?

DandelionPowderman!
Nice you picked up Terje Rypdal. Listened to him back in the 70's and also saw him live.
You remember the song 'Rolling Stone'?
To get his distorted guitar sound he used a Luxor stereo 2x17 watt, didn't he?

Gilmour - Comfortably Numb
Steve Hackett - Firth Of Fifth
Hendrix - All Along The Watchtower
Mick Taylor - Time Waits For No One

thumbs up

Gilmour CN particulary in Pulse (AMAZING)

Tough post. Every single good lead guitarist has one but let me mention two great "forgotten" short ones:

Thin Lizzy - Brian Robertson - Rosalie in Live&Dangerous
KISS - Ace Frehley - Talk to me

Cheers!

Just listened to The Long Road Home Live In Concert by John Fogerty.
Two stunning guitar solos in "The Old Man Down The Road"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(Same song has very good solos in the live versions on the DVDs "Coming Down The Road Live at Royal Albert Hall" and "Premonition").
God bless John Fogerty!

Sorry if that's been posted before, but, I for one have no other choice than choosing this:

Jimi Hendix, San Diego Sports Arena, San Diego, California, on May 24, 1969: Red House (on "Hendrix in the West", side A, track 4)

Gotta go with Comfortably Numb. One of the few solos that always makes me spine tingle and can bring tears to my eyes.
