Jimmy Page is rumoured to play on this track - where did I read that ?

Never heard that before.

I'm sure it's Mick Taylor (it's got that typical vibrato on a note or two). It always reminded me of Robby Krieger's (The Doors) guitar sound though.

It reminds me of Taylor's live sound smiling smiley

I wondered too not to hear about Page.
In the 70's there was always talk about Page doing the solo.

I searched about 4 years for that tune.
In 1995 I found the single in strassbourgh and payed a horrible price.
It was worth.

Wasn't the Page rumour from the very nice Roy Carr book?

At the time I paid 20 DM (Elsass belongs to France but is near german border). A lot of money for a student these days

I would have paid that, gladly, for it. We both agree it was worth it! Great song.

I love GHS but this song is "better" than Hide Your Love or even Silver Train.

It's too bad they didn't include this as well as Criss Cross Mind and left Hide Your Love and Silver Train is B-sides.

A little late, but I have to confess one more time:

My Love for the Rolling Stones started with this song!--> see my name!

Well I was a teenager and fell in Love with Mick singing it....then I bought my first RS LP "It´s only Rock n Roll" and after many years, records and tours - I´m grown up a little but still in Love with the Stones....

I first found/heard it in the jukebox in a bar called John Barleycorns in SF; they had the original 45. I would go in there and play it all the time in the early 90's

This is a wonderful song and 10/10 B-side gem. The only problem is if you try to include it on GHS, there'd be too many ballads. Interestingly, I found an article from "RollingStone" before the release of GHS and this was one of the song titles listed to be on the album. The article lists these songs that would be on the album (and written this way in the article):

Silver Train
Starf*cker
Hundred Years
Can You Hear The Music?
Through The Lonely Hours
Angie
Hide Your Love
Crisscross
Do Do Do Do
Dancing with Mr. D (described as a "voodooish reggae")

Interesting. And mindboggling that ‘voodoo reggae’ crap made the final cut over gems like Through The Lonely Nights and Crisscross Man. In the case of Through The Lonely Nights though it was probably the song’s lyrics which condemned it to its obscure B-side fate. I mean the song is almost too ridiculously wistful and sad given that it’s about a guy who makes his girlfriend turn tricks. But I suppose there are pimps out there who occasionally reflect on what they’re doing and feel regret. At least it’s possible, I guess. Any pimps out there?

Silver Train actually was a b-side as well (Angie). Don't know why they didn't use great songs like Criss Cross Mind which remained outtakes. Releasing album tracks on 7" b-sides doesn't make much sense in a way. But album sales were massive at the time; probably they didn't care about hardcore fans who would only buy singles in case there are hidden rarity.

Me and some friends were stuck on Sardinia for 3-4 weeks. In a bar was a jukebox with the single. We played that B-side to death.
Keith's harmonies "Every time I see ya"

It was the similar time when I found the IORR/TTLN single record in a small shop in Prague, after years of searching. Fortunately, I paid a comparably small price. Always liked that track, especially MT's singing Gibson after the last verse ...

Interesting, I've always thought it was kind of a sleeper, but not as bad as "Any Way You Look At It". For my wistful ballad b-sides I turn to "I Think I'm Going Mad", which is a top song for me, though likely a sleeper for others. One man's sleeper is another man's keeper.

Ah, I see. I can't remember all that. Just goes to show, things aren't always what they seem - Silver Train should've remained a B-side only!

The Jimmy Page rumor came from a Rolling Stone interview from the time. Page said he played on Scarlet and it might possibly be their next b-side. I’m assuming people bought the IORR single and Scarlet never came out, so they assumed that was the b-side he was referring to, hence the rumor.

But it’s 100% Taylor on the lead guitar and Richards on the wah/Leslie he used for ballads back then. I’m not sure who plays the acoustic guitar.

This first time I heard this song was from a bootleg that had both this song and Everything is Turning to Gold.

There was a ton of crackles in the song, like it was copied from another album or 45.

I like the song personally.

Has it appeared on any of the box sets?

THE SINGLES 1971-2006 (first edition had issues with this song, second edition solved that problem).

It's also on RARITIES.

I'm almost certain that Through The Lonely Nights was inspired by Gram Parsons and The Flying Burrito Brothers' version of Sleepless Nights.

Gram covered this wonderful Felice and Boudleaux Bryant song that was originally recorded by The Everly Brothers in 1960. It was part of the summer 1973 sessions for his Grievous Angel album. But I reckon Gram would have probably played it on acoustic to Keith while they were hanging out in the late 60s.

It has the same pace as Through The Lonely Nights and even almost the same words at the beginning of the song.

And here's the Everly's original -

Question for Mick from micktaylorwemissyou (aka Gary P.):
Mick, did you or Jimmy Page do the lead guitar on the Stones' Through The Lonely Nights? (b-side to It's Only Rock'n'Roll)

Mick Taylor: No, I actually played guitar on that song.
That's actually not a very well known song... it was the B-side of a single.
I played the lead guitar on that...and also sang back up vocals.

That’s a good idea as that was a great website.

Somebody needs to sit down with MT and get his thoughts and memories regarding a lot of songs. What pains me is he had an interview right before Exile was to be released where he was going to listen to the album with the journalist and talk about the songs. But his batteries were dead on his tape player sad smiley

That interview would have been priceless and cleared up a lot of muck

What issue on Singles 1971-2006? Are you sure you do not mess it with I Think I'm Going Mad?

PS. There was no 'second' edition of Siingles 1971-2006 box set. There was only one.
