they should release "had it with you" and "you don't move me" as a single commemorating the mid-80s WWIII

Sure, DP. But you gotta admit it was a huge letdown at the time. I'm sure even you expected something better than this?

Actually, I look back on those times with nothing but pure joy.

I worked in a record store (deployment, while I was in junior high school) at the time, and never had I been so excited about a release.

I played DW in the record store non-stop for the entire week, and I loved it. Back To Zero and Winning Ugly were the clunkers, but I really loved the whole album. The alternatives were Mr. Mister, Cutting Crew and Culture Club at the time, so DW sounded fresh and raw.

It still sounds pretty raw, save the clunkers.

But as you see in my deathmatch, I love Undercover more smiling smiley

other albums released at roughly the same time:
Joshua Tree, U2
The Queen is Dead, Smiths
Life's Rich Pageant, REM
So, Peter Gabriel

the smithereens, talking heads, elvis costello... list goes on and on.

Yeah, but I only worked in that store for a week smiling smiley

From memory, Joshua Tree came out later, didn't it (1987?)

Let's stop the nonsense. They are both crap pretty much in Keith's words Through and Through

Look, we`ve employed some scientific methods in our calculations, so if you`re not going to listen to pure logic, I don`t understand how we get past this.

I suppose climate change is also a myth, right?

EDIT...oh, and by the way, if you're going to quote Keith, get it right.

It's Cup the crap, not stop the nonsense (seriously I have to explain that?) AND in Keith words, it's Thru and Thru, NOT Through and Through!

Weirdly enough (I admit), I kind of like Winning Ugly. Not so much that I like it better than Too Much Blood, but - together with One Hit and Sleep - I can at least listen to it with some enjoyment.

BATTLE FOR THE BOTTOM!

Undercover Of the Night vs. One Hit To the Body

Winner: One Hit

The alternate mix of UndercoverOTN, released on ''Foxes In The Boxes'', is really nice, since it has an acoustic guitar which makes the whole thing swing. The original mix, however, is horrific, much because of the production. One Hit is a powerful song. I always loved the part when Charlie's drum comes in after the intro build-up.

Fight vs. She Was Hot

Winner: She Was Hot

Fight, isn’t a particularly entrancing song. Actually the only convincing part is the aggressive drum track. She Was Hot is a good Stones song by any standards.

Harlem Shuffle vs. Tie You Up (The Pain Of Love)

Winner: Tie You Up

Harlem Shuffle is a hideous song and the way Stones does it is utterly repulsive.

Wanna Hold You vs. Hold Back

Winner: Wanna Hold You

Hold Back is cool and heavy but a bit too ‘’out of breath’’ for my taste. I’m very impressed if Mick sang the whole thing in one take. I Wanna Hold You was awesome during the BTB-tour. But live in 2007 and on the record I’ll admit it’s pretty lame.

Feel On Baby vs. Too Rude

Winner: Feel On Baby

Reggae is my least favourite music genre, and there is nothing worse than when Stones are playing it. Too Rude is therefore the worst song on Dirty Work.

Too Much Blood vs. Winning Ugly

Winner: Winning Ugly

I actually once thought Too Much Blood was quite fun. Winning Ugly’s bridge is pure gold, and overall it's a smokin song.

Pretty Beat Up vs. Back to Zero

Winner: Back to Zero

Pretty Beat Up is a good song, at least when Ronnie plays it on his own. But Back to Zero is awesome. I love everything about it. The keyboards, the lyrics and the unbeatable groove. Just listen to how the drums and Bill’s bass interact with each other, fantastic.

Too Tough vs. Dirty Work

Winner: Too Tough

I love the simplicity over Too Tough, and the line ‘’Saw you on tv last night, in a rerun soup’’ alone makes it the winner. Dirty Work is like a depressed Dance Little Sister.

All The Way Down vs. Had It With You

Winner: All The Way Down

I like neither of those two , but Had It With You is DEAD BORING. Not even a bass line could have saved it.

It Must Be Hell vs. Sleep Tonight

Winner: Sleep Tonight

Sleep Tonight is the only song on Dirty Work which has soul. It Must Be Hell sounds like Richards making a parody of his own riffs.

Undercover: 6 points
Dirty Work: 4 points

It seems like Undercover is better than I thought.

Maybe "Undercover" includes best songs overall. But "One Hit" is two times better than any Undecover's track, IMO! (And I like a lot "Dirty Work" and "Had It With You" too...)

Dirty Work is a travesty. A band as good as the Rolling Stones should be embarrassed to have this in their back catalog. Awful album!

Have you ever heard John Lennon's TWO VIRGINS? Or ELECTRONIC SOUND by George Harrison?

No wait I've got it: the worst album ever made by an established rock/pop-artist has to be DYLAN AND THE DEAD by Bob Dylan and the Grateful Dead.

We should get Bowie to come and play Treacle's ALBUM DEATH MATCH game, it would be fun to hear what he thinks and the publicity might help treacle get that ADM TV deal he is looking for.

I listened to December's Children tonight. I'd put side one up against either of these two gems for worst album side.

I found this thread to be incredibly entertaining, even though I clicked on it with great trepidation. I confess I actually like both albums, but will concede that Undercover is better.

I'll come in later and try to do a track by track critique, but first I wanted to note that music critic Robert Christgau hated Undercover and loved Dirty Work!

Undercover Of the Night vs. One Hit To the Body - Undercover Of the Night

Fight vs. She Was Hot - She Was Hot

Harlem Shuffle vs. Tie You Up (The Pain Of Love) - Tie You Up

Wanna Hold You vs. Hold Back - Wanna Hold You

Feel On Baby vs. Too Rude - Feel On Baby

Too Much Blood vs. Winning Ugly - Duh. Too Much Blood

Pretty Beat Up vs. Back To Zero - Pretty Beat Up

Too Tough vs. Dirty Work - Too Tough

All The Way Down vs. Had It With You - All The Way Down

It Must Be Hell vs. Sleep Tonight - Sleep Tonight

Battle for the bottom? That would be DIRTY WORK VS TSMR!

i love Undercover ... It Must Be Hell drags on a bit too long but other than that, no complaints.

A better battle for the bottom would be Steel Wheels vs. Dirty Work, but even that is no comparison. Steel Wheels is still far superior to Dirty Work.
