i read somewhere that the new album will be wall-to-wall chicago-style polka.

can't freaking wait.

Way to spill the beans...but since you did, its actually a double album. Polka cannot be contained by a single disc...

oom pah pah to that.

If that "song" makes Stones-fans mouth-watering, I feel sorry for the rest of you.

It's a drunk Keith Richards making an off-the-cuff jam without any direction.

Once again I'm surprised how low the quality-bar is set for some: As long as it's The Stones, they could play polka for 3 hours and still Stones-fans would argue that it's among the very best. Pfff...

I agree, it's certainly no classic. I do like listening to this sort of stuff though. It gives you an idea of how a band like The Stones work on ideas in the studio, and how those basic ideas and riffs become actual songs. To me this is the beginnings of 'Had it with you.' It's one of the few songs off DW that I like.

Thanks for posting Rip.....

thumbs up Thank the uploader(s) on the Hot Stuff section, not me.
Oh well Bleuranger...thumbs down

True but it sounds like it turned into "Can't Cut the Mustard" and then into "Had It With You" first...as Lennon once said "All music is rehash, just variations on a theme" !

I'm not a native speaker of the English language, but is this another of Keith' play with words?
There is a saying "to the victor go the spoils", isn't it.
So could this song be heard as "to the victor you go", meaning, the "you" being the spoils?

It might be a silly question and everbody figured it out a long time, but please help
this Dutch boy, trying to grasp the meaning?

He's referring to the Victor Hugo hotel in Paris.

If I'm following marcovandereijk, he gets the reference to the hotel, but is wondering
if Keith was toying with some wordplay as well, as Keith is fond of doing.
I kind of doubt it, in this case, because the emphasis would be off-balance in "to the victor YOU go",
and Keith's lyrics tend to stick to natural word-stress/emphases/whatever you want to call it.
(Mick doesn't seem TO mind going all over THE place with THE stress.)

Thank you very much, sssoulsister.
Ever since you pointed out the "Anita love to keep me happy" I've been quite focussed
not to miss such cute little phrases again. I think I stretched it a bit to far this time.

What made me think of this play of words was the cartoon on the sleeve of Dirty Work,
where the lady makes the "lard buckets" get into the sauna and one of them says "Hugo Phurst".
It took me years to figure that obvious one out.

Just as long as the guitar plays, let it steal your heart away

Don't want to drift away from the original topic, and maybe what I'm about to mentioned has already been discussed in a different thread;
but have we tried to make a list of our favorite/ cleverest 'word plays' like that? (the "Anita love to keep me happy" is quite an eye opener for me too! smoking smiley )

Only ones I can think of right now are:

'Infamy' / 'in for me'
'Main Offender' / 'Main Of Fender'

Listening to Victor Hugo right now.
Yep it's that drumroll at 1.40 that lifts it up to a classic. STU and CW (à la Rocket 88) get Keith more inspired lyric-wise and climaxing with a nice little broken off guitarsolo at the end!

On the other hand STICK IT WHERE IT HURTS may be the worst song Ronnie ever sung.
Szzjezzz, what crap. It hurts my ears. No wonder BRENDA walked out...
And such a shame. Ronnie was also out of it at the time to create, he wrote such great songs pre-Stones and came back with I FEEL LIKE PLAYING (great album, some songs would have fit a NEW Stones album).

TALK IS CHEAP is nice. A great inside look on how KR worked to create a song.

Only with different lyrics, another pianoplayer (STU instead of JOHNNIE JOHNSON!), another drummer (Charlie instead of Steve Jordan) and MICK TAYLOR on guitar...

From the TALK IS CHEAP innersleeve:

I COULD HAVE STOOD YOU UP
Keith Richards: Lead and backgroud vocals, guitar
Mick Taylor: Guitar
Steve Jordan: Drums, background vocals
Joey Spampinatio: Bass
Chuck Leavell: Organ
Bobby Keys: Tenor Sax.

thumbs up What a line-up and what a great album TALK IS CHEAP 1988. The Best Rolling Stones Solo Album Of All Time with MICK's WANDERING SPIRIT.
Maybe we should look at all the tracks on these soloalbums as STONES outtakes spinning smiley sticking its tongue out

Yes, for all the bitching about too few stones albums in the last 2.5 decades, they really started off that period pretty prolific, and I'll throw in my appreciation for Talk Is Cheap and Wandering Spirit as well. Totally different yet excellent records, both of them.

Ever since I first heard this track, the line/melody, “You’re just a piece of piss, you’re just a piece of piss, you’re just like Brenda and all of the other sh*ts” has been playing on a loop in my head - it’s driving me nuts! I’ve tried in vain to replace it with something else. Knowing the way my brain operates, I’m going to be stuck w/ this vitriolic snippet for at least another 2 weeks yawning smiley

BTW, I think it’s a cool "work in progress" (in which I, too, hear the origins of “I Could Have Stood You Up), but I wouldn’t classify it a masterpiece by any stretch. Just a promising rough sketch (or “germ of an idea” as Keith would say). I absolutely love the piano, though. As far as the lyrics go, although there was a focus (Keef’s anger @ someone), they sound impromptu to me, as if he’s coming up with any old thing as a “place filler” for more evolved lyrics down the line (just as Mick has often done). I don’t think there are layered messages or clever wordplay to ponder within the lyrics. Keef was obviously wicked pissed off, though!
