NEW 1985 Dirty Work outtakes surfaced: VICTOR HUGO is a classic.
Posted by: RipThisBone ()

Early 1985... Dirty Work Sessions in Paris. Mick had just released his first solo album and Keith was not amused. Charlie was on a heroin/alcohol midlife crisis.
We heard the rumours at the time..."Mick and Keith not on speaking terms", "If he tours alone I'll slit his throat", "This band can hardly cross the steet, so a worldtour is not the first priority" etc. etc.

Not to be missed. A classic from 30 years ago.
What a great BAND-effort expressing their frustrations! That's Rock and Roll!!!
STU boogie woogie piano and Charlie joining in half way.

This is from the liner notes of the Foxes In The Boxes release up for download on the Hot Stuff section:

"Victor Hugo" (KR vocals):
An absolutely fascinating fly-on-the-wall track. Presumably pissed off about Jagger missing sessions and abandoning the Stones, Richards improvises a nasty set of lyrics about his bandmate, going so far as to refer to him by the derisive nickname, Brenda. “Victor Hugo” showcases Keef at his vitriolic and profanity-laced best.

Nice track but it is NOT directed against a member of the band if you listen to the lyrics (to me at least)

It's the "Can't cut the Mustard embryo", an early take of Had it with you.

I laughed when I heard him sing "piece of piss". I'd never heard that before and assumed he'd made it up on the spot. Then I decided to Google it (excellent use of my time winking smiley) From: [www.phrases.org.uk]
"Piece of piss"
Meaning: A straightforward task that can easily be accomplished.
Origin: This is a vulgar variant of 'piece of cake'. It is of UK origin and the first records of it are from the RAF during WWII. Eric Partridge, in his A Dictionary of Slang and Unconventional English, Edition 3, 1945, lists it like this: "Piece of piss, a ‘piece of cake’... R.A.F.: 1940+."

He sings "you're just a piece of piss. You're just like Brenda", so it's not about Mick this time >grinning smiley<

Would Sessler travel to Europe? With plenty of "goodies" hidden in his suitcase? I doubt so...

Well ... I doubt it's about Freddie too, but they are capable of writing/ad libbing lyrics
about subjects that aren't directly under their noses. I also don't think it's about Mick -
sounds more like Keith's perception of Mick's perception of Keith (plus maybe a few other people)

GTBlues seems to know/understand more than we all do about this one.
For one thung he got the "Hugo" "Warwick" reference...

Maybe he can spill the beans in a less cryptic way than he did Saturday.

Get "back to bed" probably refers to Keith urging Mick to get back with the band? smiling smiley

I'm not a native speaker of the English language, but is this another of Keith' play with words?
There is a saying "to the victor go the spoils", isn't it.
So could this song be heard as "to the victor you go", meaning, the "you" being the spoils?

It might be a silly question and everbody figured it out a long time, but please help
this Dutch boy, trying to grasp the meaning?

Just as long as the guitar plays, let it steal your heart away

If that "song" makes Stones-fans mouth-watering, I feel sorry for the rest of you.

It's a drunk Keith Richards making an off-the-cuff jam without any direction.

Once again I'm surprised how low the quality-bar is set for some: As long as it's The Stones, they could play polka for 3 hours and still Stones-fans would argue that it's among the very best. Pfff...

I agree, it's certainly no classic. I do like listening to this sort of stuff though. It gives you an idea of how a band like The Stones work on ideas in the studio, and how those basic ideas and riffs become actual songs. To me this is the beginnings of 'Had it with you.' It's one of the few songs off DW that I like.

Thanks for posting Rip.....

Is that Charlie on drums, or is this actually an early Winos prototype?

Way to spill the beans...but since you did, its actually a double album. Polka cannot be contained by a single disc...

Hey, I can live with the Kanye bashing but when you start bashing polka, you've gone too far! smiling smiley

I get a kick out of listening to songs evolve, such as Keith's guide vocals on Soul Survivor, Love Is Strong, etc. but I much prefer the finished products.

He's referring to the Victor Hugo hotel in Paris.
