Hi Georgelicks, at 166, how many copies did it sell? How many at #13?

I don't have the full numbers, but here an example:

#1 Taylor Swift (244,000)
#2 Nicki Minaj (59,000)
#16 Iggy Azalea (29,000)
#30 Beyonce (18,000)
#33 AC/DC (17,000)
#51 Eminem (12,000)
#96 Kenny Chesney (8,000)
#111 Slipknot (7,000)

Hot Rocks must be around 4,000 or 5,000 copies.

Yep, it includes downloads (maybe 70-80% of the Hot Rocks sales are from Itunes)

The numbers out now would likely be reflecting the end of 2014. No doubt a few thousand people gifted it for Christmas, and if they are mostly downloads then it would be Boomers passing the baton to their grandkids. There is no other reason for the sudden appearance of their most famous best-of collection to me making a sudden reappearance on the charts when they haven't played the U.S. in a year and a half. But a holiday season would make sense for the sudden spike in sales.

iTunes is the reason, the album is listed at $7.99 by two weeks now and is inside the top 100 there since then, that's $0,38 by song, not a bad deal at all.

From what I've been reading lately downloading has been on its way out as a majority way of consuming music. Streaming services have grown incredibly. Which makes sense since youtube can be used for playing specific songs and Pandora can play things that sound like and so on.

There will be another shift at some point I think - back to quality. Don't count the CD out yet.

The CD Record, or the Compact Disc?

The CD record... CD album... the digital hard copy long player... the compact disc... the variable speed sound maker...

I for one hope CD's go the way of 78 rpm vinyl. At least the traditional 16 bit 44.1K Red Book standard ones. Blu-Ray disks sound great but the navigation is cumbersome.

I imagine the record companies are dying to find a new in-hand format that will encourage us all to go out and re-purchase all our favorite music again like we did when CD's were introduced. Most streaming sounds like crap to me.

I recall years ago when DVD came out that Capitol Records was going to reissue Garth Brooks' entire catalog... on DVD, with access to the album, extra tracks, images and videos.

That never happened. But it's possible to do that now with Blu-ray. From what I understand one Blu-ray can hold essentially a box set's worth of music on it.

However, it seems pointless due to online technology for storage, streaming, etc and besides, if you scratch the disc...

Unfortunately, the market has shown that people rarely re-purchase music just because it has better sound quality.

But, my guess is the most popular music format of the future will be lossless downloads, .flac, Apple or whatever. The cost and availability of cheap storage should have made .mp3's obsolete long ago!

I am surprised high quality DVD audio never took off, I loved it. Funnily, Neil Young blames it on the women who run most households not wanting to sacrifice furniture space for speakers for the 5.1 surround that DVD audio highlighted. eye rolling smiley

That's certainly how it works in this household!

Hot Rocks sales: 5,863

Digital sales: 4,393
Phisical sales: 544
Streaming/track sales points: 926

Beginning with the December 13, 2014 issue, Billboard updated the methodology of their album chart, changing from a "pure sales-based ranking" to one measuring "multi-metric consumption".With this overhaul, the Billboard 200 includes on-demand streaming and digital track sales (as measured by Nielsen SoundScan) by way of a new algorithm, utilizing data from all of the major on-demand audio subscription services including Spotify, Beats Music, Google Play and Xbox Music. Under the new methodology, ten track sales or 1,500 song streams from an album are treated as equivalent to one purchase of the album.

Any idea - I know HOT ROCKS is the biggest selling Stones release of all Stones issued material - in what order Stones comps rank in terms of sales? HOT ROCKS is obviously their most known hits comp. I wonder how the rest rank. People I know of tend to think of HOT ROCKS, MADE IN THE SHADE and REWIND as the 3 hits comps the Stones have, most unaware of all the others!

I think 40 Licks is number 2. It sold 4 million or something, didn't it? It was the first time the two halves of their catalogue were merged so it had some cache at the time, plus of course the tour to promote it.

40 licks is out of print since late 2006 and is not available on download sites as iTunes too, the album was their best seller from 2002-2007 with over 7 million copies worldwide.
In term of sales we have:
1- Hot Rocks (15 million worldwide)
2- 40 Licks (7,5 m)
3- Jump Back (5,5 m)
4- Big Hits (5 m)
5- Through The Past Darkly (3 m)
6- Rewind/Made In The Shade (2 m)
7- Grrr (1.6 m)
8- Rolled Gold (1.5 m only in Europe)

impressive numbers for 40 Licks. Not too many of their studio albums have even sold that much.

Some Girls, Tattoo You...Sticky Fingers maybe? Surely nothing else?

Some Girls (10 m)
Tattoo You (8 m)

Then there is a bunch of albums all around the 5-6 million mark:
Voodoo Lounge, Steel Wheels, Goats Head Soup, Exile and Sticky Fingers

To extrapolate, no matter how much the diehards love their best albums, the wider audience see them as a 'singles' band.

I guess they really are a mix of both, sort of like the Beatles and to a lesser extent the Kinks and the Who.

By contrast Zeppelin and Pink Floyd are rather obvious 'album' bands that had a few singles sprinkled in.

Oh man! The two best comps aren't on that! SUCKING IN THE SEVENTIES and TIME WAITS FOR NO ONE!

SITS had to of sold at least 500,000 in 1981 alone... I know it's sold at least two more since then since I bought the original CD issue and the Virgin reissue...

Thanks for posting those numbers.

Georgelicks, you had a thread somewhere - at least I think you did - that listed album sales for the Stones... any idea where it is or what it's called? I did a search and nothing came up.

Anyway, it's nice to see those numbers. Would be great to see comps and albums sales of everything.

Indeed. It is no wonder that instead of making a new studio album, it was much more tempting to release another greatest hits album to celebrate the 50th Anniversary. A BIGGER BANG has sold - what? - two/three millions if memory serves. For today's numbers, 1.6 m of GRRR ain't that bad, and now when 40 LICKS is out, it will sell steadily until the next compilation albums comes...

Interesting to see that the 'mother of all compilation albums', BIG HITS from 1966, has sold so much, and is, actually, their best selling album from the 60's.

Here is the link:

You have to add 1.2 million copies to Exile's total from the 2010 re-issue and about 300,000 to Some Girls.
