What's your favorite?

New Rolling Stone mag has a lengthy worthwhile interview with Jerry Lee.

Star Club '64. He's backed by, I think, the Swingin' Blue Jeans.

They are all on speed - including the crowd.

It's one of the most rock & roll things you'll ever hear.

I actually got into him more in the 70s, even saw him live (half lazy, half transcendent). "The Session" had a few really good cuts (esp "Wine Spodee-odee" and "Early Morning Rain"). And I love his Country stuff from that period.

I'd love to see some. He definitely has a bunch.

Definitely one that is NOT is the 25th Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Anniversary Concert from a few years. I was happy he was there, but boy he seemed his age there and was far from one of his better performances.

The Session is a great record. No Headstone on My Grave is one of my favorites from this album. winking smiley

This is one of my favorite live albums of all time, as I've already said on another post, and it's a must have for any rock'n'roll fan.

And this is a recent release: 3 CDs compiling some of his live performances between 1964-1970 (including the 1964 Star-Club, some Vegas performances, etc.), and it's a hell of a compilation.

50's Sun and the Star Club album mentioned earlier in the thread. There is also a terrific UK TV show from 1964 where he tears it up, think it's called Don't Knock The Rock. The teddy boy audience goes crazy as does Jerry Lee. Brilliant.
Here's a link

The guy (at his best) is up there with the other all-time greats Little Richard,Chuck,Elvis,Carl Perkins,Johnny Burnette Rock n Roll Trio etc.
You wouldn't want to mess with him though. Apparently "The Killer" ain't just a nickname.

There's an LP called Killer Country. 20 tracks with which the Killer takes all the garthtravismcgrawpaisleyetcpseudos and wipes the floor and his ass with them.

This is county music. check it out if you can find it. The real shit.

I prefer the country stuff, and the Southern Roots album.

Jerry Lee can even cut Merle Haggard on I'm A Lonesome Fugitive, and Swingin' Doors. He's also brilliant on country classics such as Pick Me Up On Your Way Down and Fraulein, both from the Country Music Hall of Fame albums from 1969.

The best Killer cuts are as follows, in my opinion:

1. Great Balls of Fire: 1989 Soundtrack version
2. Over The Rainbow: Killer Country, 1980
3. I Wish I Was 18 Again: Jerry Lee Lewis, 1979
4. Another Place, Another Time: 1968
5. You Win Again: 1957 version
6. Ride Me Down Easy: 1973
7. Touching Home: 1971
8. She Even Woke Me Up to Say Good Bye: 1970
9. All Over Hell & Half of Georgia: 1973 Southern Roots outtake
10. That Old Bourbon Street Church: 1973 Southern Roots
11. Green Green Grass of Home: 1965 Country Songs for City Folks
12. I'm On Fire: 1964
13. Drinkin' Wine Spo Dee o Dee: 1973 London Sessions
14. Music to The Man: 1973 London Sessions
15. Middle Age Crazy: 1977
16. Sixteen Candles: Class of 55
17. Couple of More Years: Last Man Standing
18. Let's Put it Back Together Again: Country Class, 1976
19. Haunted House: Southern Roots, 1973
20. Alabama Jubilee: When Two Worlds Collide, 1980

While working recently, I caught part of a show from WBUR in Boston called On Point that airs on NPR daily in our area, and was dedicated to Jerry Lee Lewis mainly to promote the new biography of Jerry Lee by author Rick Bragg called Jerry Lee Lewis: His Own Story. The one hour show originally aired on October 28 this year with crappy fill in host Jane Clayson for Tom Ashbrook.

You can download the podcast and give it a listen or just play it on site. I plan on giving it an uninterrupted run soon. It sounded pretty interesting from what I heard. Thanks for reminding me with the thread. Here is the link:

The soundtrack to Great Balls of Fire is fantastic! Not one bad song on it. I dont think its still available so you will have to find one used. Jimmy Vaughn was playing guitar on it I think. Fyi- the movie great balls of fire wasnt as good as the soundtrack.

Go Dawgs!

I think it was David Milner and T Bone Burnett as guitarists on it. Jimmie appeared in the film, but never played guitar on the soundtrack.

Reading the new biography just now. Came across a reference to the Caribou sessions from 1980 which were never officially released. They're out there as a boot - 44 tracks - and easy to find online if you don't mind mp3 (hey, c'mon - it's a boot!).

Anyway, I'm listening to it just now and it simply oozes Jerry Lee magic. Avoid if you're allergic to gospel.

The Caribou Sessions were going to form part of the Elektra follow up to When Two Worlds Collide, but they were nixed.

Star Club '64 without a doubt. High School Confidential was always my favorite JLL song but the version from this show is amazing! I usually listen to the whole show, then I play High School Confidential over and over again. That's what I call rock'n'roll. Thanks for posting it Deltics. For anyone viewing this thread you owe it to yourself to give it a listen.

One thing also to bear in mind is that the Killer has recorded and re-recorded numerous songs.

For example:

1. Great Balls of Fire was recorded twice in 1957; then, again, in 1963 for Golden Hits, live at The Star Club in 1964, and again in 1975. The 1975 version is to be heard to be believed, as he slows it down to a bluesy pace. Then, there's the 1989 Great Balls of Fire soundtrack which has extra piano, and in my opinion is better than the 1957 version.

2. Whole Lotta Shakin' was recorded in 1957. Then, in 1962, it was recorded as Whole Lotta Twistin, and also in 1963 for the Golden Hits. It turns up twice in 1964, on both Star Club and Greatest Live Show. In 1970 it turns up on the Las Vegas recordings, and also appears on the 1970 Johnny Cash show, which was issued on cd two years back. The Killer then returns to it in 1973 for the London Session, and then in 1978 for American Hot Wax soundtrack, and then in 1989 for the Great Balls of Fire soundtrack.

3. Who Will Buy The Wine: this was recorded at Sun circa 1961, and then re-recorded in 1980 for the second Elektra album. I prefer the version for Elektra.

4. High School Confidential: 1958, and then 1964 at the Star Club, and then 1973 as an instrumental on The London Sessions. Finally, it also crops up on the Great Balls of Fire soundtrack.

5. I Get The Blues When It Rains: In 1960 this was recorded as an instrumental, and issued by The Hawk. In 1969 a vocal version appears on Country Music Hall of Fame.

6. Crazy Arms: 1956, 1963, 1965, and 1966 at Panther Hall. Again re-recorded as a duet with Dennis Quaid for the 1989 Great Balls of Fire Soundtrack.

7. 60 Minute Man: Recorded for Sun in 1960, but the best version was recorded at the London Sessions in 1973. Check out Rory Gallagher's slide on this, and you'll find both the Killer and Rory on fire.

8. Crawdad Hole (Crawdad Song): recorded for Sun in the late 50s, and then re-recorded for Odd Man In during 1975.

9. Meat Man: Recorded for Southern Roots in 1973, and the best version. It also crops up in 1986 for sessions with Bob Moore, released on CD as Rock It.

Even Drinkin' Wine Spo Dee o Dee was re-recorded on several occasions:

1957, 1961 for Sun.
1966 on the Memphis Beat album.
1973 London Session.

66 and 73 are the best versions.
