One thing also to bear in mind is that the Killer has recorded and re-recorded numerous songs.

For example:

1. Great Balls of Fire was recorded twice in 1957; then, again, in 1963 for Golden Hits, live at The Star Club in 1964, and again in 1975. The 1975 version is to be heard to be believed, as he slows it down to a bluesy pace. Then, there's the 1989 Great Balls of Fire soundtrack which has extra piano, and in my opinion is better than the 1957 version.

2. Whole Lotta Shakin' was recorded in 1957. Then, in 1962, it was recorded as Whole Lotta Twistin, and also in 1963 for the Golden Hits. It turns up twice in 1964, on both Star Club and Greatest Live Show. In 1970 it turns up on the Las Vegas recordings, and also appears on the 1970 Johnny Cash show, which was issued on cd two years back. The Killer then returns to it in 1973 for the London Session, and then in 1978 for American Hot Wax soundtrack, and then in 1989 for the Great Balls of Fire soundtrack.

3. Who Will Buy The Wine: this was recorded at Sun circa 1961, and then re-recorded in 1980 for the second Elektra album. I prefer the version for Elektra.

4. High School Confidential: 1958, and then 1964 at the Star Club, and then 1973 as an instrumental on The London Sessions. Finally, it also crops up on the Great Balls of Fire soundtrack.

5. I Get The Blues When It Rains: In 1960 this was recorded as an instrumental, and issued by The Hawk. In 1969 a vocal version appears on Country Music Hall of Fame.

6. Crazy Arms: 1956, 1963, 1965, and 1966 at Panther Hall. Again re-recorded as a duet with Dennis Quaid for the 1989 Great Balls of Fire Soundtrack.

7. 60 Minute Man: Recorded for Sun in 1960, but the best version was recorded at the London Sessions in 1973. Check out Rory Gallagher's slide on this, and you'll find both the Killer and Rory on fire.

8. Crawdad Hole (Crawdad Song): recorded for Sun in the late 50s, and then re-recorded for Odd Man In during 1975.

9. Meat Man: Recorded for Southern Roots in 1973, and the best version. It also crops up in 1986 for sessions with Bob Moore, released on CD as Rock It.

Isnt "who will buy the wine" the same as "it all depends" and "the wild Side of live"?, so it was Recorded More often.
The "high School confidential" Version on the Session, doesnt feature Jerry and the 86 Album is called rocket

And wasnt crazy Arms also Recorded in tue 70s?

The 70s Version of great Balls of fire is a bit Vaudeville, not Really bluesy

Who Will Buy The Wine is the same as It All Depends; it was written by Billy Mize, who I think was a friend of Merle Haggard's.

Yes; the Session version of High School Confidential doesn't feature Jerry. The 86 album wasn't properly issued, and was called Rocket. I stand corrected on that, too.

The Wild Side of Life was recorded twice at Sun, and once in 1965 for Smash, appearing on Country Songs For City Folks.

Crazy Arms wasn't re-recorded in the 70s by the Killer, as far I as I can recall. It doesn't crop up on any 70s Killer album for either Mercury or Elektra. However, the Killer returned to Don't Let Go, after recording it in 1966, in 1979.

The 1975 version of Great Balls of Fire turned up on the Bear Family reissues of Mercury material. It was recorded for Odd Man In, as were several numbers from Jerry's past, i.e. Crawdad Song and Your Cheatin' Heart, but wasn't selected for that album. I think you could see Jerry Kennedy's logic as it was neither country, rock, or any definable genre. However, it is a neat forerunner to that marvellous version of Alabama Jubilee from 1980.

I love Alabama Jubilee, as it is more of a jam that crops up on a Nashville-based album, and is an utter curveball. Plus, Nick Tosches writes wonderfully about the roots of Alabama Jubilee in a book entitled Where Dead Voices Gather. It's one of these songs that crops up from the childhood memory of artists like The Killer, or Johnny Cash, as in Nobody, and That Lucky Old Sun.

You're very welcome. I know I went for a lot of Killer tunes, and alternate versions to the hits. In many instances the best Killer tunes are the ones that go un-noticed, or that aren't that well-known, or for that matter went unreleased until fairly recently, i.e. Ivory Tears and All Over Hell. However, once you venture into deep Killer, and not the usual material, you'll find it a rewarding experience.

Why, I hasten to add, the Killer isn't in the Country Music Hall of Fame is beyond me ?

I also think what I've done with my 40 Killer Tracks is that I've spanned the years from the 50s through to 2010, and that it's a worthwhile reflection of a great career in music.

What are you talking about ? That stupid article from 1983, which, more or less, blamed The Killer for murdering his fifth wife.

You should get a grip, and concentrate on his music.

ummm .... yes, that article. What else would i be talking about?

And you should get a grip, do you just discount OJ's killing too? There's a lot to be said from the evidence w/ the case -- but even if you discount all that, you still can't deny he had relations w/ a 13 year old girl (yes, i am not forgetting Wyman did the same).

Yes she was. There is a bootleg of him joking about how stupid the UK press was not finding out her true age. But really I was sad that his actions kept you from enjoying his music. Lots of artists are pretty bad people, like many of us. I saw him perform in Reno about ten years ago. The opening act was his then wife, probably number eight. When she finished her set she introduced Jerry Lee with something like, "I may be number eight but he makes me feel like I am the only one" Then a four year old brought him to the stage holing his hand. Give Jerry Lee a chance. He is still alive and that is a plus.

??? I said 'no, he wasn't' ... to your comment that he was 12. And Yes, she was 13. Those are facts, nothing to do w/ how it was stated in the press.
