The Pink Floyd reunion is about the only thing that
turns my crank, unless the Stones show up.

While I wish I could agree with aucoin answer it's not like that. Geldof has tried to make it real clear that it's not a fundraiser. It's an awareness-raiser. Sad thing is that Benefit shows have become so trivialized today.

What! Only a cheque and no fun - no music?

Even in my most critical moments, I can't see anything wrong with this event.

We get to stop for a second and think, We get good music and the world's attention is drawn to a good cause.

To answer the question - no, its not rock n roll. Its more important than that. Simple.

Geldoff means well, but as long as there are corrupt dictators and regime's running African states, that are quite happy to carry out acts of genocide, on their own people and let them starve, things are not going to change for the better.
