wow so much 'tragedy' in their lives.

Bee Gees were great but I'm not sure I'd put them quite as high on the pedestal.

Thanks for posting, good reading.

I see what your saying, but its not so much that the belong on a 'pedestal' of the great bands or need to be. But I do think they've been underrated. For a long time, because of the disco backlash, they were seen as a niche group, but they were more than that.
Im always amazed at how seamlessly they moved from the poppy/folky late-60s stuff to the more soulful stuff in the 70s and doing it well.

you have no argument from me on any of that and I do think they belong on that 'pedestal'...just not Beatles, then Bee Gees, then everyone else.

he Bee Gees were outstanding but they do not belong with the Beatles, Beach Boys, Rolling Stones, Dylan, Hendrix. They are a slight notch below the real pantheon of rock heroes. That said their harmonizing was beautiful. I like the early stuff better than the disco but who can not want to move to Night Fever?? That beat/groove is phenomenal.

Yep I love robin's voice. .amazing.

There was a post a week ago about andy gibb...it was all 80s stuff we all saw.
But Andy's voice was amazing...so sad.
Brilliant group, brilliant brothers.
As I said earlier maybe the Beatles beat them for songwriting.

Seem to recall some T.V. Special years ago were they (all three) revisited
the disco stuff in a sort of unplugged/acoustic format. The beats had been changed to a more 4/4 rock and roll. It was very good. Does anybody else remember this - did it get released ? I'd buy it.

As long as they didn't slag off Chorlton-upon-Medlock.....

You might have to scrape me off the floor at the end of the tour, but it'll be really good scrapings. - Mick Jagger

I like some songs from the Bee Gees. They were in my opinion, a very good pop band. Saw them also in 1989 in a great concert.

Funny - I just downloaded a bunch of Bee Gees songs about two month's ago...had a yearning to hear some of there oldies - loved New York Mining Disaster, I've Just Gotta Get a Message to You, and I Started a Joke.

And like other IORRians, I spurned & scorned disco during its assault the airwaves..but as I'm getting on in years, I have to say a couple of their songs from that era stand the test of time as great pop hits.smoking smiley

WTF? No one put this up or did I miss something? Turn this flucker up loud and if your feet don't move, you are fluckin' dead.

And dig these covers of the Bee Gees:

Not the greatest of rock groups, but the Bee Gees did write some really great songs.

I believe they also wrote "Emotion" by Samantha Sang.

Andy's biggest songs are, more or less, the same thing. Bee Gees songs in all but name. Barry had a bunch of hits in the early 80s, just with other people singing.

Disco v Rock appears to occupy the same place in American musical culture as Punk v The Dinosaurs does in the UK. The Bee Gees did a hell of a lot more than just Saturday night Fever!
Greatest ever songwriting team after Lennon/McCartney?
The only thing I can't forgive them is the disparaging comments made about their birthplace Chorlton (suburb in South Manchester) in a BBC documentary. Came back in a limo and slagged us right off.

No, Jagger-Richards.

There is a bunch of very good songs coming from the Gibbs boys, but that they should be better than The Beatles???? Forget it, Lennon/McCartney still rules...

The Bee Gees songwriting capacity is unique in popular music history. They have written at least 7 full albums for other artists, Jimmy Ruffin, 2xStreisand, Diana Ross, Dionne Warwick, Kenny Rogers and Carola. If you look at this website you'll see that they have recorded several hundred songs which were never released.

Barry Gibb is an open tuning guitar player, right? I think almost all of the time.
