I played the long outro of Down the Road Apiece so often that eventually the inevitable happened and I dropped the needle, resulting in a skip. Now whenever I hear the pristine version on mp3 or whatever, it just sounds--wrong . . .

I've played that over and over again. It's just magic!

The guitar solos by both Ronnie and Keith; Just My Imagination, Hampton 1981.

Make it the best version imo.

Plundered My Soul...the best of the last few years or decades. Because it's almost entirely from the seventies probably...the best era for the Stones: filled with melancholy in ballads, blues, rock, country etc.
That sound man with those feelings...Voodoo Lounge has something of that (yeah not much but it does!).

+1

Is there the slightest chance they can drop Tumblin' Dice for Plundered My Soul in their next shows? Please!!

The beginning of Gimme Shelter.
The piano intro to She's A Rainbow
The Start of Brown Sugar..those opening chords are killer...
The recorder on Ruby Tuesday
The intro to Winter
Mick Taylor's lead in the live version of " Love In Vain" from Ladies & Gentlemen...
The chorus intro to You Can't Always Get What You Want
Mick's entire vocal performance on Let It Loose....kills me everytime!!!
There are way too many more but these came to mind immediately.

As others have mentioned... WHIP from Sucking In The 70s. I encountered that track for the first time at age 12... it blew my mind. It honestly sounded like a completely different band. To this day it is one of my favorite Stones performance of all time. The un-edited version on Handsome Girls is even better. The version from night 1 which is on Live In Texas is also stellar, but that one in particular is just phenomenal.

The middle horn section of Let It Loose into "...Maybe your friends think, I'm just a stranger..." Goosebumps EVERY time!

Let me start by saying what a fantastic thread this is. Every Stones fan can relate.

So many of these moments for me, but let me start with these:

-- When The Whip Comes Down, Hampton '81, first 20 seconds. Particularly the moment Charlie and Bill join in. Everything just sounds so tight and in sync. I find it awesome.

-- 5:50-6:00 on Sympathy For The Devil on Love You Live. When Ronnie starts doing those high bends at the very top of the neck and Keith is locked into his pattern.

-- The last 1:15 on Brown Sugar on Leeds '82. Bobby Keys going an octave higher than he usually does. Keith is just wailing. Rock n' Roll at its finest.

-- The last 4 minutes of Satisfaction also on the Leeds '82 release. Sounds like an out of control train about to come off the rails. Freakin' love the sax of Gene Barge and Bobby Keys.

-- The part in Silver Train where Mick sings "I'm going home on a southbound train...". When he repeats it the second time I get chills. The song hits its apex.

-- Satisfaction from the Tokyo '90 release. When Mick hollers "I wanna get down!" at the end. Jagger is just so intense and into it here it's astounding.

The 'What a beautiful buzz' part in Loving Cup.

This and all the others already mentioned.

...the ending of moonlight mile, love to play that especially at night while driving.

The beginning riffs of Ventilator Blues and Nicky's piano at the start of She's a Rainbow, Keith's wah wah in Fool to Cry, Mick when he comes in on Miss You with "I've been lying to myself..."

I could go on and on, there's too many amazing moments in Rolling Stones songs to count.

Re: Passages that made you replay over & over

There have been so many mentions in this thread so far where I have l;iterally gotten goosebumps just thinking about them; and I say to myself "How could I not have mentioned THAT one?"

The Nicky Hopkins piano breakdonw in "Soul Survivor" alone...

I thought of another one. In studio "Hot Stuff" when Jagger starts rapping at end; "music make you forget all your trouble.." For the life of me I could not decipher what he was talking about.
I sort of prefered it back in the day when one did not have immediate acces to all lyrics It was more fun and mysterious. many of us came to these boards armed with a lot of factual mistakes, but with a whole lot more awe and wonder.

SOme great examples listed above and many I would have on my list...but there is one tiny snippet which does it for me...it's in the GYYYAs Sympathy, where Keith and Taylor are exchanging solos and when Keith has switched back to rhythm and Taylor has just taken over, Keith does a really funky chop and Charlie responds with a little fill...gives me goose bumps every time and it's the Stones at their very best....anyone else know the bit?

- the live version of When the whip comes down in 1978 (sucking in the 70's version) and here again the two Ronnie's solos and also the part with both Keith and Ron quitars a little bit before the 1st solo.

Wow, you nailed it here. This version (from Detroit, btw) is the single best live recording of the Stones in the Wood era. IMO. I know the Hampton 81 version of Whip gets a lot of love on this board, but man, to me, the this '78 version makes those guys at Hampton sound like they are wearing Depends. Smokin' hot rock on this track from Sucking in the 70's.
hi rocker1,
Are you sure it's from Detroit ?
I may be wrong but on my cd (TSP-CD-200-1), it's written Midsouth Coliseum, Memphis, Tennessee, june 28, 1978
Can someone confirm ?

Yes, absolutely positive it's Detroit. The liner notes on the "Sucking in the 70's" album were wrong, and this has led to countless confusion on numerous bootlegs. For years I thought this was Midsouth Coliseum in Memphis, but there's no doubt, it's Detroit. And there is an edit made to this song on Sucking which shortens the overall length by about 30 seconds. But it's a great edit. Whoever is responsible for its inclusion on Sucking, or is responsible for overseeing its editing, had to be g-damn fan of the band. A perfect live track, really. And I will just reiterate here, because it's so apparent to me, that this is a band that is about 10 times hotter than the band who did this song at Hampton in 81. (And 81 ain't bad by any stretch!)

ok thanks rocker1
I've checked it out on dbboots and they say the date is 1978-07-06: Masonic Temple Auditorium, Detroit
do you have that too ?

I also easily prefer the 78 Detroit version to any other version. The sound was raw and clear. Just perfect !

Start me up - The guitar part (from 01.59)!

Out of Control – the Refrain when Mick starts after the more quiet part with "Now I am out, yes out of Control" – love this song so much, it was a highlight for me this year: first Stones concert live and they played it – great moment!

The one moment that's made me hit replay, sometimes several times, is the intro to It's Only Rock and Roll from Love You Live…

…"Alright!"…(guitar)…"It's only rock 'n' roll…"…'Whoooo…'

Some have posted that this song has never been played well live. I don't know…this version is fantastic...

The guitar solo on Star Star

The first minute of All Down the Line

The ending of Fool to Cry, when the tempo increases and Jagger sings, I'm a Certified Fool

The opening chords to Doom and Gloom

The Keith riff on Hand of Fate

I could go on and on, but those are just a few.
