The 5 worst Stones albums
Posted by: Blueranger ()
Date: July 31, 2014 04:23

The title says it all.

5. December's Children (not the songs at such, but as an album it doesn't work)
4. Bridges To Babylon (quite simply, too long. Too many by-numbers rockers)
3. Steel Wheels (badly 80's production, uninspired songwriting)
2. Emotional Rescue (lazy songwriting)
1. Dirty Work (bottom of it all. Horrible)

Honorable mentions: A Bigger Bang (again too long), It's Only Rock 'N' Roll (the first time they did an album that didn't sound nescessary).

5. Get Your Ya Ya's Out (Most overrated live album ever)
4. Dirty Work (Too many weak songs without real melody)
3. It's Only Rock N Roll (Horrible mixing with vocals wah down, Id You Can't Rock Me is almost unlistenable beacause of that)
2. Some Girls (Decent songs but the sound is so awful and trebly that I can't listen to this album)
1. Black And Blue (8 songs, wtf!!! Junk singing by Mick on Memory Motel, Cherry Oh Baby = painful reggae. Only good cut on this album is Hand Of Fate. Hot Stuff was later on wonderful on Love You Live, and Memory Motel was also great in concert.

I actually LOVE 'Bridges to Babylon'& one of my ALL time favorites is 'Undercover'!!

I'd hate to label any one of their albums as 'worse', or 'horrible', but the ones that get & have gotten the less played would have to be;

Still Life

Love You Live

Flashpoint

Dirty Work

Rewind

Made In The Shade

"Well my heavy throbbers itchin' just to lay a solid rhythm down"

I dont really think any of them are "the worst" I think they all have their place and some material may not be as good as others.
What does surprise me reading this thread is no mention of the "remix" or "deluxe" editions.
Also I dont think No Security or Live Licks were comparable to Ya Ya's or Love you Live.

Limiting it to studio albums:

Dirty Work
Bridges To Babylon
Voodoo Lounge
A Bigger Bang
Undercover

Live albums:
The only essential ones are Ya Yas, Brussels, Love You Live (side 3 only). Most of the others are superfluous or redundant.

Regarding Ya Yas. You're on crack. No disrespect intended. Agree with you about Black & Blue though. I would rather drink paint than ever have to endure Melody again.

1. Undercover
2. Dirty Work
3. Voodoo Lounge
4. Bridges to Babylon
5. A Bigger Bang

I deleted 1, 3, 4, and 5 from my MP3 Player and stored them on my computer hard drive in order to make room for other material.

Dirty Work was never on my MP3 Player, and I never owned the album in any format. I consider that one to be the worst of the 5.

In my opinion Steel Wheels was the last decent album, and as some one else stated here a while back, their swan song.

Of the 5 listed, I would rate Undercover the best.

Dirty Work - Yep, most of it does indeed suck.
Goat's Head - Murky, stoned, tired, and largely boring.
Steel Wheels - Way too slick and oh so dated.
England's Newest Hitmakers - I don't like the sound and all the covers. They were 10x better by the time they got to Chess six months later...
A Bigger Bang - I love about 4 tracks - the rest just seem kind of pointless.

Granted, most of these stack up well compared to most bands' albums, but the Stones raised the bar high.

"Got live if you want it" critically seems to get a lot of flack mates. I'm just saying that's how it is reviewed and that it is mixed with audience overdubs and studio recordings they say are mixed in for a live appearance.

I say crew it, I'll put an album up that seems popular here but some others clearly dislike.

In no particular order:

TSMR
Dirty work

More or less, the others are okay, for me, Black and Blue is quaint, sure, it is watered down Rolling Stonesy but some good songs nonetheless. With all of the UK USA versions of Between the Buttons, though I love Ruby Tuesday quite a few of the studio tracks I seriously question.

1. Metamorphosis.
2. Steel Wheels (in a category by itself in the official Stones albums - really the only under-par one, IMO)
3. 12 X 5 (some really good material, i.e. the Chess stuff, but doesn't work as an album)
4. December's Children (same)
5. Goats Head Soup

Some of the ones mentioned here - DW, ER, Bridges, Bang - I all love...

Re: The 5 worst Stones albums

12X5 - weird collection
Metamorphosis - Three good songs are not enough
Live Licks - Twickenham drags it down
A Bigger Bang - Some songs should have been omitted
Have You Seen Your Mother - Live - I like it, but it is nothing compared to the EP

For me there's no bad album.Dirty Work is weaker than the rest, but they all got personality. The one I don't listen to is A Bigger Bang and of course Live Licks.

People don't like Goats Head Soup? Some of Mick Jagger's very best lyric-writing and Keith's most soulful vocal track, in my opinion. Not one of their top four or five albums but among the five worst? Are you nuts?

I get so much pleasure listening to the Rolling Stones.

Point a gun at my head, and still I cannot make the list.

OK, I am not a fan of VL, and sure, Wheels and 12x5 are no Exile, but "worse" and "Rolling Stones" just don't fit in the same sentence in my world!

The winners of these polls are always the usual suspects: dirty works, satanic, bang, etc. None of these albums have defined the career of the Rolling Stones. In fact, if never released, the Stones would still be the Stones.

Yet, if dirty works, satanic, bang, etc. are not essential albums in the history of music, they are so in the context of the stones catalog. They often represent the transition from one phase to another. Or times of difficulties. Or whatever.

I love them all, and not only because imperfection can be charming. Maybe it's only because I always find something in them with which I can relate to.

I love 'em all, too, but five albums can still be worse than others smiling smiley

Actually there is only one really bad and horrible album in Stones history:

Their Satanic Majesties Request

And if I have to mention a second one, I would vote for

Between the Buttons

The Stones as Psychedelic- or Pop-Band didn't work ever.

Those and "Dirty Work" are the 3 worst, I agree. Actually, if you count the amount of still listenable songs on each, Between the Buttons would be the worst, because it doesn't have a single leg to stand on. Dirty Work has got One Hit, and Satanic Majesties has 2000 light years, Citadel and She's a Rainbow.
