1- Brussels Affair - Stones in their prime...period.

2- Sticky Fingers - Perfect album

3- Exile On Main Street - Wide range of styles, awesome mixing

4- Let It Bleed/Beggars Banquet, tough to choose between them, equally epic.

In the days of LPs you put the weakest songs as the second to last songs on side 2 (always finish with a good one). On CDs that makes no sense.
Anyway, these have no "weak" songs in that spot
1. Let It Bleed.
2. Sticky Fingers.
3. Beggars Banquet
3. Aftermath (UK issue)

This is today. On another day Exile mighwould be up there, and also Betewen the Buttons (UK) which have a lot of charm. But I see that I tend to like best the LPs where Keith did most of the guitars

It's interesting how SOME GIRLS is such a bizarre album in some ways. The sound of it is awful - it's very tin can sounding, very thin, too bright, too clean; not fun to listen to by those apsects. It has one incredibly boring as shit song (Respectable) and one that, it's a nice nod etc, but they left off a ton of great stuff in its place (Imagination) as well as Respectable (think Figi Jim, Misty Roads, No Spare Parts, EITTGold and a few others).

It has 'disco' (Miss You), rock (Whip, title track, BTMMRun), punk (Lies and maybe Shattered) and country (FAEyes) and a fantastic "ballad", Beast Of Burden.

What SG has as an album is an incredible attitude that its follow up doesn't. Of course having the huge hit (Miss You) helps with its status. Overall 3 pretty big singles (regardless of charting) and a great promotional campaign that would put any "current" promotion to shame (really since the 1990s).

And yet... some days I can't stand it.

To me SOME GIRLS is a somewhat uneven album. However, it features three outright grand songs, even in a career perspective. Those are "Miss You", "Far Away Eyes" and "Shattered". "Beast of Burden" is a good song as well. And personally I do like "Lies", with its punk leanings. The title track is also quite good. The remaining songs are OK. My verdict then is that SOME GIRLS is a more or less great album, by virtue of its parts, mainly due to the three grand songs. In addition , as a whole the album emerges as even a little better, because of its energy and vitality. The band appears as a younger band again than on the preceding albums. Much needed at the time of new wave and, in its midst, punk.

As to a shade of "boring", however, I cannot always avoid the sensation that Just My Imagination" might be just that.

There's not a boring moment on SG.

Interesting that you find Back To Zero less boring than Respectable, Skip winking smiley

Really? The tile tune is one of the worst and Shattered is just embarrassing.

A differing point of view, probably, but on the level of that album (one of their weaker, also I have to say) I prefer "Back to Zero" to "One Hit to the Body", "Fight" and "Hold back". I listen to vinyl, and almost always, despite "Harlem Shuffle", it feels good for me to have come through side A and be able to switch to side B of DIRTY WORK with only quite OK songs or even better. [Among the remaining tracks, I find, for instance, "Winning Ugly" quite nice with its Tamla Motown pop(?)-like approach and better than it is valued by most posters here.]

That's how democracy of taste works... Individually taken some idiosyncratic, surprised choices, but in the end, taking all those views together, the ranking is pretty conventional...

most of us seem to have limited our ranking on the studio albums.
in hindsight i should have probably thrown "Stripped" a vote.
adding all the recently released live downloads into the game,
i would be left too confused to actually reach a verdict. but
seeing B2B right up there with B&B and aBB ahead of IORR does
re-encourage the impression their latter-day studio work made on me.

well we were both merely talking in relative terms.
if something is more boring than something else,
both of these things don't necessarily have to be boring.
just a comparison. or ranking if you like =)

Now: 3
12x5: 3
England’s Newest Hitmakers: 3
Dirty Work: 2
Out Of Our Heads (UK): 2
Out Of Our Heads (US): 2
The Rolling Stones: 1

Sheesh! With numbers like that, this is mainly why I just sit at home and listen to the Stones by myself. I'm also with the one poster who chose No. 1--I have a Russian bootleg of No. 1 with extras, so sometimes that subs for Newest Hitmakers, then it's on to my other favorites, 12X5, Now, and Out Of Our Heads (US and sometimes UK goes into the rotation if I'm not in a December's Children mood).

So, what posters here are saying is that those first few albums covering 1964 and 1965 are right up there with Dirty Work. Again, sheesh!

Stats like this is one reason I never go to parties.

It's an unofficial poll so it's fun and I take that into consideration.

There is a big crossup as to the duo-albums, early discography on both sides of the Atlantic, OOOH, Aftermath, Between The Buttons so the results are to be taken with a grain of salt.

You would really need to list album and then songs of each album to start getting a near-official result imho.

Quality vs. quantity smiling smiley

Aftermath is a bit misguiding as well, since virtually no one specified which release they preferred.

Just a fun little situation report, which shows we'll never change smiling smiley

But probably understable, since the status of those rather low-profile official live albums (a download release, a DVD extra release) is not so obvious as proper studio albums.

Probably if everyone would have all the official releases listed in the front of their eyes, and rank all of them from best to worst, we might have a bit more objective account of fan's taste. But that would be a helluva job....grinning smiley In that sort of poll I think quite many would reflect carefully how they would rate, say, BRUSSELS AFFAIR to A BIGGER BANG, especially the ones who now wouldn't even remember their existence now when thinking of best four albums.

But even then I think if we look at the recent top nine or so, it probably would not be much different... the difference and some odd rankings just happens in the bottom, in where the idiosyncracies of individual fans seem to matter more, since it is a question of just a vote or two...

And like noted, the early DECCA/LONDON catalogue suffers from having so many different but related releases covering the era.

But 'Big Four' is big four...

This is true, of course.

Still, what's on the top of your head, or imprinted in your heart, as the best releases will often be pretty accurate.

But this was just good fun smiling smiley
