Quintessential Brian Jones song

I imagine this has been covered at some point but seeing as it is the anniversary of Brian's death I thought it might be time to resurrect the topic/debate .

If you had to play one (or two) songs to someone as an example of Brian's contribution to the Rolling Stones what would they be ?

Ruby Tuesday, Paint it Black, come to mind but his last great performance during Rock n Roll Circus on Slide Guitar during No Expectations is undoubtedly my favorite.

No Expectations, his guitar slide is exquisite and I am waiting which shows his musical versatility.

The multiple instruments later on for versatility and musicianship - but for me it would have to be something early on when Brian was still playing guitar. Buzzing and stinging on King Bee - howling on Little Red Rooster - holding down some of the earliest riffs on The Last Time or Off The Hook - shaking the place apart with that rhythm on Mona - the outro on It's All Over Now - lead on Get Off Of My Cloud...

- oh, and I forgot that nasty solo on I Wanna Be Your Man

Their cover of I Can't Be Satisfied to show how he had to musical genius to take the Blues uptown in facility, while losing none of its authenticity. And Ruby Tuesday to show his ethereal side.

"songs as an example of Brian's contribution to the Rolling Stones"

* His slide on I Wanna Be Your Man, Little Red Rooster and No Expectations.
* The guitar riff of The Last Time (Yes that was him, not Keith!)
* The guitar intro on It's All Over Now (what a sound!)
* His many great contributions on Aftermath.

But if there's one song the band should play as a tribute tonight, it's Shine a Light that was allegedly written by Mick about Brian.

For me, it comes down to:

"No Expectations"
"We Love You"
"Ruby Tuesday"
"2000 Light Years from Home"

I think "little red rooster" has a strong Brian Jones' vibe to it. It is true that the citar is the instrument that seems to be linked to Jones forever but I personally associate Brian with the slide and the harmonicas. He really got that slide sound down amazingly well and that as early as 1962-63.
Rock and roll,
Mops

So many to choose from with different instruments:

Ruby Tuesday - recorder (and piano?)
PIB - sitar
Lady Jane - dulcimer
Under My Thumb/ Out of Time - marimbas
Not Fade Away/ 2120 SMA/ Going Home - harmonica
Little Red Rooster/ I Wanna Be Your Man/ Can't Be Satisfied/ The Last Time

So many but I especially think of him on "Back street girl".

IMO this calls for a two-fold answer. There were two Brians; musically.
The Blues purist early on.
"I Cant Be Satified" is his best work IMO.Also "I Wanna be your Man". But there is also brilliant harmonica playing on "I just wanna make love to you" and "Goin Home".

Some of his best guitar playing as a weaver must be on "Confessin' The Blues".

Then his focus seemed to change. Different instruments. There are many beautiful ;performances. I'd have to say the strongest are the ones that shaped the song; that became a hook in itself. "Under my Thumb: is brilliant. As is "2000 Lightyears" and "We Love You". Top of the pic probably "Ruby Tuesday".

there is masterwork on lesser knwn songs like "Ride On Baby". "Please Go Home".

I Wanna Be Your Man and 2000 Light Years From Home.

Sums up Brian's contributions pretty good, imo.

Fricke's Picks Radio: The Blues and Genius of Brian Jones

By David Fricke | August 13, 2014

Here is a recent music milestone that went unmentioned: the 45th anniversary of the passing of the Rolling Stones guitarist Brian Jones. His death at 27 of drowning on July 2nd, 1969 (often cited, in error, as the 3rd) was the first tragically premature loss of rock's modern era, yet it recedes further from view every year, eclipsed by the history his band made without him and the inevitable parade of mortality now mounting on rock's obituary pages.

Published on October 9th, Brian Jones: The Making of the Rolling Stones (Viking) by the British journalist and former MOJO editor Paul Trynka is the first serious, thoroughly reported biography of the ill-fated Stone, with extensive new research into Jones' privileged but difficult childhood and his transformation by the exotic language and vitality of American blues. The story is a consistent, downward spiral but comes with a still-astounding soundtrack. This playlist features a few of the records on which Jones left a profound mark, as an eager bluesman and explorer, along with new music by John Mayall, Robert Plant and Ryan Adams plus a strong hint of what Nine Inch Nails and Soundgarden are up to on their shotgun-Nineties summer tour.

If it is Brian on RT I would pick that one as well. But we don't know if he plays on it. I wish someone could confirm it...

I am pretty sure Brian wouldn't want to be "summed up" by a Glimmer Twins composition, so:
Little Red Rooster. In more ways than one :E
