1:40 and throughout. Why isn't this "riding the riff"?

this song has never been good live. no wonder they keep tinkering with it.

Bollocks. STEEL WHEELS, VOODOO and BRIDGES tours were fine performances, with VOODOO probably the best - ever - for Tumbling Dice.

Those are practically almost exactly the same tempo!

For sure, Ronnie solo is far better in 1989...

Yeah they are.

They played it at a snail pace in 1975.

You obviously got a thing for solos smiling smiley

A normal electric guitar and a b-bender are often very different-sounding, though. I agree that Ronnie sometimes makes too much out of the bender, instead of merely spicing up the solo with it. Country bends in every lick on TD is too much. Same with BTMMR, imo. The more sparse playing, like on SG suit the songs better.

On the VOODOO tour Ronnie really laid into the solo (with no B-bender as I recall) and it was excellent.

Didn't realize that there was a speed limit on songs. Personally I like to hear songs played at different tempos. Especially songs that are played repeatedly tour after tour. Sometimes the Stones like to cruise and other times they like to floor it! Either way (or somewhere in between) it's always a fun ride.

I measured the tempos:

1989 version - 120 bpm

2014 version - 119 bpm

I withhold my position on this. They standardized TD from the '89 tour and on. They made it safe but at the same time they made it, sort of, lifeless...

If so, that's mostly due to Mick's singing, imo. I think the 89 and 94 versions are excellent. They might be a bit horn-heavy, but they have always relied a bit on the horns toward the ending, even in 72...

that 02 version is actually boring,,,,listen any of the Hampton-81 or New York 27.6.1975,,,,thats riding the riff...last time he did that was 1997-1998.

April 11, 2006 Sydney. Tumbling Dice. A little quick for my liking (preferred the version I heard from front row in the pit at the Enmore Theatre in Sydney in 2003), but I vividly recall walking out of the arena and finding my brother in law who had sat miles away, and he said he had never before "heard" how beautiful that song is.

And you know what? IT IS. Its a lovely number done, over the years, in a few differing 'styles' but nevertheless, remains a simple, melodic and graceful piece of soul to me.

I love it, at any speed!

Keith doesnt drive the song and this is one of those songs he has to be in charge. But thank God it isnt slow because the slow never ending Vegas-era versions are the worst. I think the tempo is much better now. Of course nothing comes close to the Taylor-era versions.

But I prefer this to any other version since 1981. video: [www.youtube.com]

All the versions from 1989 and on are faster than the 72/73-versions, if you're talking about TD.

Yes but the 1972 and 1973 versions were better. But ok I didnt know all the 1989- versions were faster, they felt a l o t longer and endless. This 2014 is better. More tempo.thumbs up

And the "snail" versions:

It's not really so much the up tempo... Bill Wyman's playing with Charlie was the groove. People don't really know what Bill mmeant to the band live. Darryl is a great musician but the chemistry is not the same....

If Darryl was the original and Bill took over people would be bitching all day long.
