The greatest Mick Jagger vocal performances
Posted by: DiscoVolante ()

Sympathy For The Devil - also his best lyric
Gimme Shelter - duet with Merry Clayton raises hell
Moonlight Mile - the peak with the ending vibrato is almost up with Van Morrison
Winter - so soulful, especially the 'wrap my coat around ya'-part
Worried About You - sweet falsetto suits the song perfectly
Far Away Eyes - The half sung, half spoken style is just brilliant

I know it's "played out" and his vocals seem low in the mix but Mick's greatest recording is Tumblin' Dice.

I think that "Doom And Gloom" might rank up there as well, since the vocals in there are truly amazing!

But the most amazing vocal performance is to sing this song like this at age 70:

A couple or more days ago I listened to a piece of the Kansas boot with Taylor here and there audible on it. But what stroke me the most (except the annoying sax) was Mick's horrible and especially artificial way of 'singing'. Nothing authentic in it as it was during the first ten years (yes, 1973 included). Very unnatural and disappointing. But well, I heard it myself in 1982 in Rotterdam.

Dandie, Dandie! I didn't use the word "beautiful". I like his singing until 1975 on stage, because it's quite authentic and natural and not artificial. Anyway it's not barking. During the 1973 tour he still sings without making hostages, while the 1978-1982 singing is too much influenced by the time ghosts, by others. It sounds downright forced: Mick Jagger imitating Mick Jagger in a bad way.

I was going to add that to the lists, and Almost Hear You Sigh.

Not mentioned yet (I think):

Following the River - For its emotional intensity
Keep Up Blues - Great example of how well Mick can project humor
Miss you - the album version is unsurpassed, Mick does everything in this song.
Lady Jayne - Elizabethan Mick

So many more, probably add some more later.

On SFM 1973 he is almost vomiting. I love it, but it's weird that you think it's more natural.

The whole B-side of TATTOO YOU is a helluva statement. Then that nuance- and register-rich, vital, deep, expressive voice was suddenly lost into 80's mindless, one-dimensional shout-singing...sad smiley
