It's hard to choose 5 out of many fine acts. My List goes:
The Stooges/Iggy and the Stooges
Ramones
Crazy Horse
Pattie Smith Group
MC 5

The heavy hitters on my list. I can't see how any other band could push out any of these:

1. The Doors
2. Jimi Hendrix
3. The Grateful Dead
4. Lynyrd Skynyrd
5. The Beach Boys

CCR is in 6 thru 10 because of Fogerty's selfishness and besides "Free Bird" alone puts Skynyrd in the top 5.

6. CCR
7. J.Geils
8. Bruce Springsteen
9. Aerosmith
10. The Eagles

and of course the Mamas & the Papas.

So the way I see it, we have a good 30+ groups in the top 5!

Let me ask you this, not counting the Stones and the Beatles, is the top bands from (North) America and the top bands from the UK pretty much even? Which do you prefer?

I think the US seems to have stronger 'solo' acts. If we were to include Elvis, Bruce Springsteen, Michael Jackson etc., I think you would have it be more even.

Although I'd still prefer the UK bands, my top 10 would probably be an even split between the two.

Beach Boys
Byrds
Doors
Wilco
Flying Burrito Bros ( for 1 album)

The Band would be there too - even if only Levon was born in the US, they were based there while recording as far as I know.

So the Rolling Stones are a French band?

I can't be bothered digging out the booked I have about the Band to see where they formed - they may have been recruited by Ronnie Hawkins in Canada - but I'm giving them a mention anyway. And yes, place of recording means zilch, thanks Treacle!

I think you mean shallow pool.

On the other hand, it's a fitting display of your ignorance and semi-literacy.

Actually, I mean after thinning a pool, you have a thin pool. Not a swimming pool, but the pool to choose from. So, this is a different meaning of the word "poo" than you are using.

You have now proven you are simply less intelligent than I am. Sadly, the gene pool did not thin you out.

I wonder what bands the members of IORR will list in say, 20 yrs time? Who will they remember??????

Dave Matthews Band
Neon Trees
Arcade Fire
Gaslight Anthem
Nickelback

MMmmmm.......I pity them, they wont have much to hold onto!

given the average age on IORR, I think in 20 years time there will be several here challenged to remember their own user name.

You should lighten up the Ronnie-thread with some of that humour. It could definitely use it - the Taylorites are putting up the road (Wood?) blocks grinning smiley

In no particular order:

Allman Brothers - epic live performances, twin lead guitars and twin drummers to create a unique sound

Creedence - the songs still sound good

Bruce & E Street - though I prefer the more stripped down band, they still play their heart out every night and keep it fresh by changing set lists

J Geils - not the commercial success of others, but married the blues and soul to rock. It didn't matter if it ws an original or cover, they smoked it.

Ramones - still influencing new bands
