l don't know why,but from 69 to 78,the band live would do mostly great versions of their recorded stuff with a great groove to them, but starting in 82 and the whole stadium era,all the songs suffered from a rush to finish, the tempo on most was way to fast, with no groove, like lets just get this over with, and it has continued to this day...

Gimme Shelter is one of the best examples:

On 1969 they played it (the few times they did) in a raw, dark disturbing tone that was totally different than the Studio version though both had that distorted sound as you listen to a song that was repeatedly played& recorded on tape and from a speaker (I know that for some of the studio guitar bits it was actually done that way) - bus still - a fresh live version of the song.

On 1972 US tour it became a fast rock song that had little "dark" aspect in it but was totally different than the original IN a GREAT GREAT WAY.

In 1973 it was more instrumental but pretty much followed the 1972 approach - totally new song. Taking the original apart into pieces, only to rebuild it again in a new way.

1975 was a continuing of the 1972/3 but with more guitar effects and less... less Taylor I guess... Still a fast Rock song.

When it was presented again live, after 1989, it was supposed to follow the studio version in some way and only then we discovered that when keeping the original version "theme" the song cannot be done live in a way that matches the studio. BTW - GS is (to the best of my knowledge) the only "classic" I really like when given a totally new approach live. Listening to 1972/3 versions never make me feel cheated like with songs such as with "We are not gonna take it" (AKA "See me, feel me, touch me heal me") by The Who where on the occasions it was played live since 1982 you got a feeling as if they ruined it on purpose.

Nobody said Angie yet? A true studio gem and a very low live number.

They did a great but very different live Version during the 1973 Tour of Europe. I like both Versions as well.

Bruxelles'73 (1st show) comes to mind. "very low live number"? C'mon! eye rolling smiley

The only poor live versions of Angie were the 1989/90 versions, which were played forcefully and without any emotion at all, imo.

I like both the electric and acoustic live renditions.

Many moons ago they played some great live versions of TD, but it's hard to beat the studio version.

Worried about You. Magic of Wayne Perkins's solo cannot be captured live.

Now this is a " VERY LOW Live Number " !!!!

The 8-Track version is the best. Maybe the Rarities album version. I can't decide but 8:35 is a little bit too long and 4:49 is a little bit too short .... for Miss You.

This is the ultimate bathroom break or refreshment stand break song for me the past couple of decades.

Maybe they can quit while they are ahead then (with those 2 songs) . ??

Replace Miss You with "Hot Stuff" or "When the Whip Comes Down" .

Replace IORR with "Dance Little Sister" or "Time Waits for No One". The latter only with Taylor on board.

For the sake of keeping things a little bit fresh.

Of course they should. Not with TWFNO, one of the ballads would have to go, then...

Yes... tithe thread's say "Better on record than live"... if you think that Brussel's "Angie" s better than the original... there you go. I think the original recording is pure magic. One in a lifetime, or a whole career. Brussels is ggod, but I just can't think of Angie without Nicky Hopkins. No live rendition will be better than the original! Billy's piano simply couldn't macht Nicky's.

The Philips cassette recorder was not used for Gimme Shelter.

Jiving Sister Fanny is a shame that they've never done it live.

The biggest disaster of a great studio song live is Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker). It's never been done live worth a shit.

After that, Jumpin' Jack Flash post 1970.

"The Stars in the Sky,They Never Lie" release on the Midnight Beat label has a solid version. (Along with maybe the best version of "Happy").

Even now,"Heartbreaker" is not that bad live. Not as good as the '70's by far,but better than "Miss You" , "IORR" , what "Sympathy" has become etc.. I would like for them to try it with Taylor a handful of times on this tour (in places where it has not already been done, ideally).
