I saw them in 2005 with Zack Starkey and the still the best live show I have ever seen by any band including the Stones.

Their first farewell album?

Just saw them 2 years ago in Vancouver. Great show, especially since it was a greatest hits show so I knew every song. Unlike the Stones, I don't have every Who album and mostly familiar with warhorses. Also, it was the best sounding concert I've heard in Rogers Arena!
If they come to town again, I'll probably go, depending on ticket prices.

Nah , It doesn't go Yanga-dang , it goes Dang-da-da .

But I loved The Who .

For years, back in the day, they were my second band .

But they don't really exist any more do they ? I don't think Pete and Roger constitute The Who.

They got away with it when Keith sadly passed but without the Ox ?

One sad loss too many I'm afraid.

Are The Stones The Stones without Brian and Bill then?
Or Ian Stewart?

Good point there were 5 of them to start with instead of 4 and they lost two members so it's not their fault they're down to two vs three ;-) And at the end of the day people go for Mick and Keith the same way they go for Roger and Pete. The difference of course is that Roger is not stalling all of Mick's ideas by claiming he has "two or three dynamite riffs", he just puts out solo albums ;-)

Quite the reversal of fortunes (at least for the fans) when The Who were touring behind old material in 1989 and Mick was claiming left and right that there was no way he would tour without a new album...who would have thunk it would be down to this 30 years down the road ?
Six members actually. Sorry I'm a huge fan of Ian S. Wonder what he would think of the band these days...

I was there 9th row center and thought they tore the roof off the place. They played a 'full' show with 23 songs (most shows got 21 or 22, with some a few as 19) and busted out 'Acid Queen' for the first time since 1989, and played the not-too-frequent 'Pictures of Lily' as well.
I thought the band was on fire. Roger sounded about as good as he could for 2016, Pete was tight and energetic, and Zak played the hell out of his drumkit. I guess having 2 days off between shows instead of the usual 1 really paid off.

I saw them again 2nd weekend at Desert Trip and found them lacking compared to the Vancouver show.

Looking forward to the next 'symphonic' tour. Knowing Pete, it won't be shmaltz.

I was at the Vancouver show also, 3rd or 4th I’ve seen them and definitely the best. Sound was excellent. I got a decent recording of that show somewhere I should dig it out.

Saw them first row at the Quebec Summer Festival in 2017. What a great night we had. Pete and Roger truly gave a great performance.
I really don't understand people who say that a who tour is not justified. How is a Stones tour more relevant than a Who tour? I don,t get it.
And I truly appreciate Pete saying he insists on having new material.
Some other rock bands from that era should take note....

My favorite band is the stones but I'm not blind enough not to aknowledge that they've been ''rolling'' on the automatic pilot since 2005, and maybe more.

Was Endless Wire the last collection of PT songs to be released? Has he put out any solo stuff in the last decade or so?

Yes to the first question and No to the second.

There will be 29 total concerts in North America. (Most of the shows are at arenas, though he mentioned the possibility of a stadium or two.)

I'm wondering in what American city are there are enough Who fans to fill a stadium? New York, I guess, but they really haven't been a stadium band for 30 years now, not since 1989, when they did the We Just Thought We'd Like To Come Back And Say Good-Bye Again tour. Even the idea of seeing them play arenas doesn't really appeal to me. Probably the only way I'd consider going would be if they did some intimate theater gigs.

I love so many stages of his work with the who, and his late 70s/early 80s solo stuff is just brilliant.

there has been 1 new who single and I believe 3-4 new PT solo tracks but no full length albums

Expect a Las Vegas residency...after Elton John bows out.

talk of strings/orchestra makes me nervous. seldom turns out well. i think roger tried that & lost a bunch of money at one point. daltrey sings townshend. we'll see how this all develops. a residency at caesar's palace would be cool. it's a great room & when they did the mini residency there, the reports were good.

Nah...No theater gigs for the WHO...The WHO are a stadium/outdoor festival band...and they still are! See the previous posts. Anyone who was at the Quebec City show can vouch for that....

I saw Foreigner last year on their orchestral tour, and it far surpassed my expectations, being one of my favourite concerts I attended for the year. Adding strings/orchestra can work really well with rock music, I really hope to be able to see one of these shows.

"The Who has yet to release tour dates but Townsend confirms the group will begin a 14 show east coast series in Michigan in May." --- Hennemusic

They were just in Grand Rapids a couple years ago and they have yet to play Little Caesars Arena so the smart money is on Detroit - but WHO knows?

Would the the Stones be the Stones if they lost Charlie? The Who lost their identity when Keith Moon died.

I take the point of folks comparing it with members the Stones have lost, but I don't think it has anything to do with the numbers.

To use Loog's terms , the Stones have plenty of their identity left... but, for me, The Who have lost half of what defined both the Sound and the whole vibe of the band.

[When Bill left the Stones, a bit of the "Roll" was arguably lost...

...but with Charlie still in the engine room with Keith bouncing off him for that unique timing thing the band has going on , there was plenty of the feel left .]

The Who Announce U.S. Dates for ‘Moving On!’ Symphonic Tour

“Just because it’s the Who with an orchestra, in no way will it compromise the way Pete and I deliver our music,” says Roger Daltrey

By Andy Greene

The Who have announced dates for their Moving On! tour, which will kick off May 7th at the Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Michigan and wrap up October 23rd at the Rogers Arena in Edmonton, Alberta. As Rolling Stone previously reported, a local orchestra will join the band every night of the tour for an evening of music from their entire career.

“Be aware, Who fans!” Roger Daltrey said in a statement. “Just because it’s The Who with an orchestra, in no way will it compromise the way Pete and I deliver our music. This will be full throttle Who with horns and bells on.”

Pete Townshend and Daltrey will be backed by the same band they’ve used in recent years, which includes guitarist Simon Townshend, keyboardist Loren Gold, bassist Jon Button and drummer Zak Starkey. The set list is still being worked out, but the band has indicated they want to play a selection of songs from Tommy to honor its 50th anniversary along with tunes from Quadrophenia and other select hits from their large back catalog.

They aren’t billing it as a farewell tour, but Daltrey recently told Rolling Stone this could indeed be his last one. “I’m just being realistic about going through the 75th year of my life,” he said. “I have to be realistic that this is the age I am and voices start to go after a while. I don’t want to be not as good as I was two years ago.”

At some point in the new year, the Who plan on releasing their first album of new songs since 2006’s Endless Wire. Townshend has already finished demos and is waiting on Daltrey to record his vocal tracks.

THE WHO ANNOUNCE 2019 NORTH AMERICAN MOVING ON! TOUR

29 DATES SET FOR SUMMER AND AUTUMN LIVE TREKS

ICONIC BAND ALSO SET TO RELEASE THEIR FIRST ALBUM OF NEW SONGS IN THIRTEEN YEARS

The band will share the stage with orchestras at marquee venues including Fenway Park, Madison Square Garden and Hollywood Bowl

For Who fans everywhere, the announcement of a brand new tour means only one thing: the world’s most untameable rock band is about to deliver the goods once again. Never ones for nostalgia, singer Roger Daltrey and guitarist and songwriter Pete Townshend will be unleashing the combustible force that is The Who, with symphonic accompaniment this summer and fall in 2019. Produced by Live Nation, The Who’s North American MOVING ON! TOUR will bring their indelible brand of powerhouse rock to 29 cities beginning in May. The kickoff date is May 7 in Grand Rapids, MI with the band wrapping up the first leg of the tour on June 1 in Toronto, ON. A much-anticipated series of fall dates will launch on September 6 in St. Paul, MN and conclude on October 23 in Edmonton, AB. Tickets go on sale to the general public beginning Friday, January 18 at LiveNation.com.

The Who will also be releasing their first album of new songs in thirteen years later this year. On stage, the line-up will be rounded out by familiar Who players featuring guitarist/backup singer Simon Townshend, keyboardist Loren Gold, bassist Jon Button and drummer Zak Starkey, and complemented by some of the best orchestras in the US and Canada.

The Who’s fan club pre-sale starts Wednesday, January 16 at 10am local time and runs through Thursday, January 17 at 10pm local time. Every pair of tickets purchased online includes a redeemable code for a CD copy of The Who’s forthcoming album when it’s released. This offer is available to US and Canada customers only and not valid for tickets purchased via re-sale. In addition, $1 from each ticket sold for the MOVING ON! TOUR will benefit Teen Cancer America.

The tour is their first return to the states since their 2017 Las Vegas residency. That same year they did a limited run of shows following 2016’s rescheduled leg of their acclaimed 50th anniversary celebration. The band also drew praise for their extended 2012-2013 North American run, a 36 city Quadrophenia tour with the band performing their 1973 rock opera in its entirety.

Commenting on what Who fans can expect on the 2019 MOVING ON! tour, Pete Townshend stated: “The Who are touring again in 2019. Roger christened this tour Moving On! I love it. It is what both of us want to do. Move on, with new music, classic Who music, all performed in new and exciting ways. Taking risks, nothing to lose. Looking forward to seeing you all. Are you ready?

Commented Roger Daltrey: “Be aware Who fans! Just because it’s The Who with an orchestra, in no way will it compromise the way Pete and I deliver our music. This will be full throttle Who with horns and bells on.

I’ve seen The Who about ten times starting in 76, 79,82,89, 2002 last time I beleive was 2005. I’m pretty sure every tour I saw except 89 in Foxboro they opened with (I Can’t Explain) they also have done it on tours did not see.
