I know, we're up to page 4, but my 2 cents:
1 Beach Boys - all Capitol 2-fers (so many gorgeous gems, digging esp Warmth of the Sun, Farmers Daughter, Caroline No, Hushabye, etc & surf guitar rockers like Moon Dawg, Surf Jam - one of the great catalogs by an american band)
2 Traffic - inc the 2 Sundazed Spencer Davis Group cds (uneven, you can program a killer 12 or 14 song set from each), side 1 of Last Exit, John Barleycorn, Low Spark, Shoot Out (underrated - quintessential 73 a la Goats Heads, Free's Heartbreaker, etc)
3 Hard to Find 45s: Sweet Soul Sounds - Between "Thank You/Everybody Is a Star" (1 of the greatest ever 2-sided singles) & the doped out masterpiece "There's A Riot Goin On" Sly produced/wrote/played almost everything on 2 singles by Little Sister, & 3 of the 4 issued tracks are on here: the 7 minute proto-Riot "You're the One (in the same league as Thank You & Family Affair), & a revamped "Somebody's Watching You", maybe the first US hit ('70) to use a drum machine, a year before Riot. Now why couldnt they include the b-side "Stanga"? This comp also has the orig 'Theres Gonna Be a Showdown" (later covered by the NY Dolls), Arthur Conley's Funky Street, & more gems...
4 Bo Diddley - His Best: 20 classics, not as comprehensive as the box, but better sound, & the guy was a genius (read Robert Palmer's essay in the Chess Box, 1 of the best pieces of rock analysis ever and it opened my ears to Bo) -
w/ lead maracas by Jerome Green, & guest appearances by Willie Dixon, Little
Walter, Otis Spann, etc. Also: 'Rare & Well Done'nearly as good as the famous stuff, & the newly reissued 'Gunslinger' (4 bonus trx) cd (why not redo all his early albums?
5 Creation - 'Biff Bang Pow' & 'Making Time' - Page copped the bowing technique
from gtr virtuoso Eddie Phillips, who actually integrates it effectively on much of this great band's high-powered mod/psych/hard rock (think Small
Faces/Who/etc) - 2 cds, or 4 lps, & Ron Wood replaced Phillips on the last 3
singles (all included).
6 Bryan Ferry - The Bride Stripped Bare, his best solo album, w/ Waddy Wachtel.
7 Darker Than Blue (Various/ Blood & Fire label) Reggae does soul, claiming "Get
Ready" (long & dubby), Give Me Your Love (Curtis) & 18 more beauties.
8 Louisiana Swamp Blues (Capitol Blues Collection # 22) (You reading, Duke?)
Just got this after a 9 month Amazon search (it was stolen from me years ago) -
the Cap. Blues Coll. was a killer series of about 30 titles issued 1995 - 97,
all now o.p. Each had tasteful & distinctive digipaks, lengthy booklets (20 - 40
pages), & great music, from every 'blues' genre . Like a 3 cd set of unissued
John Lee Hooker 1948-52. This delightful set has rare Guitar Slim titles,
Clarence 'Bon Ton' Garlow ('Jumping at the Zadacoe'), Boo Breeding, Boo Zoo
Chavis, & 6 rare early trax by Clifton Chenier. (I still havent replaced the also-missing Pee Wee Crayton set)
9 Jeff Beck Group - Beck-Ola (expanded) If 'Truth' ('68) was the template for
the 1st Led Zep album (JP Jones, Page both appear, as does You Shook Me, & many
riffs & ideas - and Ron Wood's deep, fluid bass sound was copied for LZ 1 as
well), than the '69 followup is pure skronk, punk/Physical Graffiti - thrashing,
loud, over the top...Complete opposite of, say, 'Blow by Blow.'I love it. Rice
Pudding (whose tape splice surprise ending was used by the Beatles on She's So
heavy a few months later) is a tour-de-force, they stomp all over Elvis like
elephants on speed, and its all leavened with Nicky Hopkins' gorgeous
instrumental, lyrical, soulful 'Girl From Mill Valley'. Jimi dug it. The bonus
cuts kick ass, and show sides of the band not represented elsewhere.
10 Chic - all albums. Underrated, endlessly playable, Roxy Music & jazz
influenced 'disco' by a real band. Listen to "At Last I Am Free" 1 of the
greatest ballads of the last 30 years. Along w/ Dr Buzzard, smart, inventive,
witty, - the 2 best groups of the 'disco' genre (and both subverted it).
Also, Night Train to Nashville, all Stones of course, Nirvana Unplugged &
Nevermind, Nico, James Chance/White, & I havent even opened the Cameo/Parway 4
cd box yet but it sure looks good!
