So Howard is still trying to be a "shock jock" I see. Throw out some insults / wait for the reaction. WTF does he know about music any way?Stick to talking about hookers and porn stars Howard.

Think about it from the standpoint of being a R&R fan, not necessarily a hardcore Stones fan. From that perspective he's probably in agreement with most folks outside of the hardcore fan base).

I've heard him before put down long blues jams by various artists who get together at charity shows and such, so the comments about Mick Taylor's solos being too long don't surprise me.

I think the classic rock fan who may think of the Beatles and Stones as the pinnacle of rock may be thrilled to take in the latest McCartney and Stones shows, and that's probably where he's coming from. Most aren't interested in a miniset of obscure material. While McCartney playing say all of Beatles for Sale or the Stones playing all of Satanic Majesties Request in the middle of the show may thrill a small minority of people, most who may only get to see these folks once would be turned off by that (myself included who only can catch them once a tour but have seen them almost 10 times in the last 33 years).

It's not about what he thinks in particular. But he does have a big microphone and there aren't a lot of other places to hear conversation like this. I guess it rubbed me the wrong way because it sounded like the archetypal casual fan.

KOVACH mentioned hardcore fans wanting to hear Satanic Majesties in its entirety at a concert. That's ridiculous. But how about a serious go at She's A Rainbow? An acoustic stab at Backstreet Girl? Heaven? Parachute Woman for something more electric guitar driven? There's all kinds of rarely or never played goodies to stick in there instead of the yawn inducing Tumbling Dice, or Sympathy For The Devil.

I guess the biggest shock is that the individual band members themselves don't lobby for more variety. In that sense it really is a Vegas act.

Kind of hard to care what Howard Stern thinks about anything, to be honest. winking smiley It doesn't affect what I think, after all.

So, StonedInTokyo, what we have here is a difference in approach. You're happy with whatever the current Stones lineup has left to give you. Fine. I think I see the same hourglass quickly losing it's sand, and I would like to get something beyond that before it's just too damn late. I didn't think it was too much to want Bill and Mick T. play with them again in a meaningful way. It could have been an unplugged type situation. Something. One last album with real depth to it. I can dream.

That's all we have here is a difference in approach.

FWIW, although I do try to take a positive approach to this band in it's 50 plus year, that is not to say that I am happy with whatever they serve up.
The addition of Taylor - certainly welcomed - should arguably be expanded
and regardless is negatively offset by the exclusion of Wyman. The ticket
pricing has been nothing short of a gouge. However, as I've said, I accept things as they are without complaint as it's still left up to me to decide
if I want to see the show or not. I'm still undecided about attending the Japanese tour...years ago that would be unthinkable...

Howard wants what everybody wants....to have Jagger on his show.

Re: Howard Stern on Hyde Park

Howard's a casual Stones fan at best. I remember he saw the Licks show in New Jersey, which was around the same time as a Paul McCartney show in the area. He raved about Macca, and was neutral on the Stones. He's driven by visuals (especially lesbian strippers), so obviously Charlie and Bill aren't as sexy as, say, Dave Grohl and Robert Trujillo, respectively.

At any rate his musical prowess overall is iffy. Baba Booey rushed into the studio to say that Robert Palmer had died, and Howard said, "The guy from Led Zeppelin?"

And his championing of Enuffz Enuff was a lonely crusade. Not to mention the Jesus Twins and the Stuttering John album.

Mick Jagger will never do Howard's show--it would be like talking to a drunk tabloid reporter. Stern couldn't even get an interview with Pete Townshend, despite the fact that Townshend was actually scheduled to be on the show one day via phone hook-up. Stern's interview with Townshend was barely 15 minutes away, but just listen to how Stern and his cohorts blow it in a matter of minutes....

Howard has done some great interviews with McCartney. Screw Townshend. I see his book in the library and I have little desire to read it. I don't get the 'drunk tabloid reporter' crack. Stern barely drinks and says he doesn't get high anymore. He does his research and gets his guests to drop their guard. His interviews are in long form, no commercials. Billy Joel and Lady Gaga (twice), were fantastic.

The whole point of this was not to debate the merits of Howard Stern. It was to show that some of our greatest fears, that the casual fan really does want the warhorses crammed down their throats, is real. And since the casual fan hasn't seen them that many times over a long period, they have no idea of the rapid drop in the music's quality.

That being said I certainly hope there are still Deluxe editions of their past albums in the pipeline. I guess they'll only do post ABKCO albums, but you never know.

Stern should have refrained from commenting the way he did about Townshend and should have kept his people at bay. To talk disparingly on air of a guest you are about to interview--especially when said guest can hear what they are saying--is just plain unprofessional. Serves him right that his guest walked. He should have shown more respect.

Townshend's book, Who I Am, great memoir. The music of Pete Townshend will far outlast the self-absorbed babblings of Howard Stern--and you can take that to the bank and set up an investment fund with a diversified portfolio.

This isn't my greatest fear. I'm not a casual fan, but I still want to hear what you call warhorses and I call classics. There are lots of other songs I'd love to hear as well, obviously, but I'm not going to be disappointed if they do Jumping Jack Flash. I WOULD be disappointed if they didn't.

Not a quite perfect perspective of a 'casual fan'. Howard forget to mention Keith's piss-break numbers (well, probably he was in the loo then...)

I never listen to Stern's show, but I do remember Doug Tracht...aka, The Greaseman, who took over Stern's radio slot in DC in the 1980's. He did some great characters, but his shock jock routine got him in so much trouble, eventually he just kind of disappeared. I wonder what ever happened to him?

The suckers want flash and hits and they have deep pockets

The suckers are the majority and when you run a world-class band you cater to their needs. Because you want to keep playing big venues and festivals.

We at IORR with our colorful requests ("hey play that song you haven't done it since 72" "hey do a club tour" ) would sink the band in no time if Jagger fulfilled our wishes smoking smiley

Jagger likes controlled interview situations.... There is no upside to him appearing on any Howard Stern show. Too much possibility of embarrassment and worse. Mick has been around doing this (Stones interviews) for 50 years and is not about to repeat mistakes he made decades ago.
Jagger also has no need or desire to laugh along with Howard's jokes and ribbing. He figures he is past the age where he should feel obligated to laugh at what he sees no humor in. Family and La'Wren being exceptions. I am sure he humors his children

There's this thing called Google. You type in Doug Tracht and it leads you to Wikipedia. Where you can find Doug got in trouble over Martin Luther King Day in 1986 when he made the tasteful comment, "Why don't we plug four more and get the whole week off?" You can catch up and find out where Doug is on your own.

Okay, there are a handful of songs you'd like to hear every time, and JJF is among them. I have never been to a bad Stones concert that started with JJF. But SFTD? Or Tumbling Dice? Does everything have to be from the back cover of the Grrrrrr CD? Make the concerts a commercial AND artistic success. Or do one good concert where you do satisfy the hardcore fans, film it and release it. Let the suckers pay for the big concerts and then give us one decent one that we will by and will be a refreshing part of their catalogue.
