Sorry have been spinning it lately and all the tracks I though iffy at first sound great like the title track, don't call me up, also think Dancing in Starlight is awesome. Nice full sound and good playing throughout. Now, everyone bag on me.

I've been a fan of it since it came out, although I haven't listened to it lately.

I have to agree with Keith's opinion at the time..."dogsh-t in the doorway"..

I liked Vision Of Paradise. I don't remember too much else, though.

Bash me but I have always really liked the 1st 6 songs of it a lot.
the title track, lucky day, everybody getting high, and gun are trash.
the album then returns to real good with Too Far Gone and New Set or Rules.

I've never listened to the complete album, but I remember the single God Gave Me Everything and it was alright.

I think Keith gave it the "Dogshit in the Doorway" tag because Mick chose to record another solo album rather than another Stones album.

Listening to another track from that album at the time--I forget which--it struck me that his lyrics when solo are much more inventive--that is, expressive and soul-searching--than in anything he has recorded with The Stones in later years, with the possible exception of Out of Control.

With The Stones' formulaic approach, it seems that he almost has to "dumb it down" a bit lyric-wise and rely more on simplicity to accommodate the "cockney working class rock rebel" role he has to fit himself back into whenever he re-groups with the band, whereas the lyrics on Goddess say quite a bit more and from a more worldly-wise and mature point of view.

Perhaps this is why Mick feels he needs to record solo now and again, because, "great bunch of guys" that he is, the role he must play as the Stones front man might seem to him a bit constraining and self-limiting after a while, so to be a more complete artist he goes off to be a few other guys until it's time to cycle back once again to the role of the street fighting man who can't get no.... ah no! no! No!

I do like it. It seems to give glimpses into how it is to be Mick Jagger.

Favourite songs, without preference between those two: "Hide Away" and "Don't Call Me Up".

An album that I truly hated when I heard it the first time. But it really grew on me, and after a few listens I started to really like. Yes, I like it very much now.

Good lord Hansie that's the first time I've ever seen you write anything remotely negative! But in your inimitable style you managed to turn it round into a positive by the end of your post..Phew!!

The thing is that I don't give a damn about Sir Michael's upper class, vagabonding, tax dodging life style. Or all his infidelities.
And that's pretty much what the lyrics are about. So, for a starter, the lyrics means nothing to me...

I think there are some great songs on the album. Too Far gone is my favourite - it would have made a great stones track. Lucky day has a great riff but the vocals and the chorus really let it down. A great example of a riff and groove that had a lot of promise but went in the wrong direction...

Remember that doco 'Being Mick' that came out at the same time?

I thought that was great- a fascinating insight into his life.

I like Lucky Day, Too Far Gone (a bit generic, though) and Dancing In The Starlight.

The rest is so so or downright poor, imo.

Brand New Set Of Rules is the embryo of what became Streets Of Love smiling smiley

There's some songs on it I really love as they are, and I'm quite happy he didn't bring those to a stones project, but the other songs could have been really interesting having gone through some fights with Keith first :-)

The songs aren't bad for the most part, but the sound of the record - the production, performances, instrumentation, and musicians - are not good.

Great track.

I don't necessarily love everything that Jagger does, but I'm always impressed that he's putting himself out there. And this Keith fan still can't quite believe the comments that KR made in the press--gleefully and repeatedly: "Dogs@*t in the Doorway…" And especially when the album was such a commercial disappointment.

As it happens, the excellent "Hide Away" could've been a killer Keith 'n Woody track. But we'll never know. And we'll likely never hear great, innovative Stones material because the creative partnership within the band is soured needlessly out of the "ignored little brother" syndrome which Keith indulges in--and fuels--publicly.

Ragging on the album after the fact was so pointless. Like ragging on the knighthood. Or ragging on the long-ago Marianne situation. Or on Jagger's endowment! For me, it creates a huge sense of disappointment in one of my all-time heroes.
