The Beatles were the best harmony singers (they got three of them), but the Stones with Jagger and Richards were certainly a good second.

There were many great harmonies in the other bands as well.

The Who, The Kinks, (four great singers in the 70s), King Crimson etc.

The Stones were nowhere near being second best, but they certainly did the coolest harmonies, imo. The Beatles did the sweetest.

What about Beach Boys harmonies?

Keith's backing on 1981-82 were the roughest and nicest ever

I just named a few David Crosby is probably the best "back up-vocalist" ever.

As a lead singer, he sounds a bit tame in comparison, imo.

The Beach Boys deserve a mention as well, although I'm not crazy about too much falsetto...

There's probably a better version out there, but this is one of my favorites of Keith's BV:

Keith's ear for a harmony probably dates right back to his days as jug eared choir boy ;^)

The voice may not have remained angelic but the ear remained constant.

Keith backup vocals are still great in Honest I do (1995 version), I also like the final part of Laugh I nearly died and the "we don't wanna get stoned" line from We don't wanna go home.

Man, I just listened to "Casino Boogie". Great vocals from Keith, and that bass line (especially on the fade out). Just amazing.

I personally have a particular fondness for his 81/82 backing vocals,

And don't forget Worried About You - the best Keith backing vocals - rocking with soul!

In later 70's he also did beautiful stuff. I LOVE his parts on "Memory Motel". And I/m not talking about his solo sections; it's those incredible harmonies during the verses. My favorite part, maybe, of any Keith BU vocal ever is when he goes low for "...she sang a song to me..".
First he goes up with "she began to play", and then he kind of criss-crosses with Jagger for "She sang a song to me".
And on "Through the Lonely Nights" on the "everytime I see ya". That was always the typical Keith part that me and my friends air-Stoned to when we were kids.


At the very end of "Satisfaction" on Got Live if you want it one imagines Keith making his way up to a mike to start singing "I can't get no"
