Congratulations Portugal for your win against Sweden! You were the better team. Ronaldo is truly a world class player. And good luck in Brazil next year. You already know the language!

Too early to say congrats to Portugal? - Zatan has made two goals.

A pity one of them can't be in Brazil

Mr. Blatter, I didn't know you're a member of this forum!

Anyway, Mick's big news tomorrow is that Portugal will be in the 2014 world cup.

Over in Spain and saw end of World Cup Winners friendly against South Africa.
They were beatan 1-0 by what looked like an own goal to me.
Don't know if the team were the regulars ,but not up to their usual great standard.

Let’s congratulate the tiny British Colony of Gibraltar, who this evening, competed in their first-ever ‘official’ football match post Uefa-membership. A nil-nil draw with Slovakia is a pretty credible start, I’d say. They’ll be eligible to take part in the Euro 2016 qualifiers which begin next September.

So it goes, this is the 3rd straight-time at least Portugal has had to go to the playoffs to qualify for the Euro or World Cup. So I thought they were pushing their luck a bit. Whatever. Portugal has cultural ties to Brazil obviously and I wish them the best of luck. I'm sorry to see Sweden and the others who lost today come up short as well. Good games all around, all the teams played relatively well including Iceland who lost out to Croatia.

Spain lost friendly to South Africa, Austria beat the USA 1-0.

One last competitive matchup still to come, Mexico at New Zealand around Midnight EST. Mexico has a big lead on New Zealand.

It's just sad that we won't see Zlatan in Brazil, an amazing player.

Today all the newspapers here have Ronaldo on the cover. King, they call him smiling smiley

Yeah, that's more like it! It saddens me that the FA Cup, for example, is now almost considered to be a kind of secondary competition. It'll go the same way as the League Cup eventually. The Champions League is overrated and I haven't been enthralled by an England National Team since the days of Euro '96 and Alan Shearer. It just doesn't interest me anymore.

I have a mate whose a Spurs season-ticket holder. He actually prefers following his local team, Dartford. Conference football is where it's at!

USA is through to the finals although I'm not sure if the American public is aware of that. They have their own
form of football (some sort of handball played with an oval ball). By the way, USA played their first football match
ever against Sweden in 1916. They won with 3-2. Here is a picture from that occasion at Olympic Stadion, Stockholm:

Stoneage, I think the popularity of 'soccer' will continue to grow in the U.S. I sense that the sports profile is continuing to rise. It used to be the dumping ground for the European greats who wanted one last big pay-deal, but since the likes of Beckham - who was actually only 31 when he signed for the Galaxy - France's Thierry Henry and Ireland's Robbie Keane decided to head Stateside, I feel a change is occurring. However, it'll always be a distinct second-runner compared to NFL, NBA, NHL, etc.

Guess so, Al. Maybe a very succesful effort in the World Cup would change things a bit. Who knows? It's difficult though to win the World Cup. Very few nations have managed that.

In the 70s Beckenbauer, Pelé & Co. played in the states, the real big Soccer-/Footballguys ... It will remain kind of a womens Sport in the US forever!
