Stones Most Versatile Group Ever

I submit the following data as only some of the evidence for the above assertion. I have listed as many music categories as I could think of. This does not cover all of the great Stones classics such as Brown Sugar and She was Hot.

Psychedelic-2000 Light Years From Home
Country Rock-Dead Flowers
Slow Country-Far Away Eyes
Instrumental-2120 South Michigan Avenue
Rock Cover-Down the Road Apiece
Classic Blues Cover-Love in Vain
Original Blues-Down in the Hole
Rap-Anybody Seen My Baby
Reggae-Dance
Romantic Ballad-Angie
Soulful Ballad-Following the River
Jazz-Rain Fall Down
Generation Y-Doom and Gloom

I dare anyone to name any other rock group that is as versatile as the Stones, using these 13 categories. Phish maybe?

Flam

I have to agree with your assessment. Should "Hot Stuff be included as "Funk."? Or maybe Fingerprint File?

Certainly the art of putting a personal stamp on different forms of pop music was mastered by late 60's British bands. While the Stones have been great at this they are no match to The Beatles who could mirror other styles in the most brilliant way while still retaining originality.

i think the stones are the most versatile band ever.

they can write songs using other artists styles but make it sound as if its their own style.

they do it far better than the beatles who in my opinion were overrated.

thats what i love about the stones.

listening to

jigsaw puzzle
citadel
she was hot
one more try
were waistin time
slave
brown sugar
stop breaking down
shes a rainbow
no expectations
let it loose
memory hotel
gimme shelter
child of the moon
we love you

all different in their own way.

Yes. I don't know of any band or artist that is capable of owning any and all genres. No one does it half as good... babies, they're the ones. Yes.

The Stones though not nearly as polished as the Beatles are far more versatile band. The Beatles have never played an authentic blues and the Stones have done many.

I hate to say this, but I can think of any number of bands who covered many different styles such as those listed above, many of them bands I don't even like much or am not particularly interested in. The most obvious ones that come to mind are Queen (who I do like) and Zeppelin (who I love and who covered all the above-listed genres and more on only 8 albums), but then there's U2, REM, Pearl Jam . . .

They did occasionally, but it was mainly Lennon who would try that style.

They may have dabbled a bit in different genres but they didn't own them like the stones do. Same with covers. Stones nail them every time whether its covers genres and making them all sound as if they were the originators. The Stones are also the best rock band at performing the blues as well. They get it like no others I think. Real blues that is. Zeppelin did not play the real deal blues. They were just bluesy.

U2, REM, and Pearl Jam?

I'll just stop.

the kinks have an entire country album muswell hillbillies. ray davies doesn't "dabble" in things. whatever he felt like doing he would go in full tilt not release 1 country song or 1 funk song on an album. look at all the concept albums the kinks did. each one was usually a different genre of music.

^ Oh, and of course Mick Jagger never dabbles. Miss You, anyone? I say, Shattered? Dandelion? Too Much Blood? Might As Well Get Juiced? A bit of dabbling in every decade, and not always with the best results.

If you want to play along at home you should follow the rules. It did not say simply suggest bands which could/might.... it said plug the band's already published songs into these categories....

Slow Country-Far Away Eyes
Instrumental-2120 South Michigan Avenue
Rock Cover-Down the Road Apiece
Classic Blues Cover-Love in Vain

And as for the other bands I mentioned--the point is not that I particularly like them (I don't like U2 or REM at all), but that they have undeniably played many different genres of music. The Kinks likewise.

I unimaginably seem to have skipped the third of my triumvirate, the White Stripes, who covered most different genres on just 6 albums.

I'm not sure if 'Anybody seen my baby' qualifies as rap. And the Stones doing jazz?

Anyway, Beatles tried their hand at most of these (perhaps even more categories)...listen to the bootleg BBC tapes, the bootleg Let it Be film sessions, all their released recordings. An incredible amount of styles (yes, even an instrumental '12 Bar Blues' one of my favorites).

I think Cherry Oh Baby, or even Luxury might sub a little easier in the Reggae category.

What about DISCO as a category? Hot Stuff, Miss You, Emotional Rescue, Dance 1 and 2

Re: Stones Most Versatile Group Ever

kinks:
dance/disco- wish i could fly like superman
country- muswell hillbillies
rock- you really got me
cover- milk cow blues or long tall sally
vaudeville- alcohol

here are songs that all sound different from the ones i listed but no clue what genre i would call them:
too much on my mind
come dancing
skin and bones
strangers
i go to sleep
dedicated follower of fashion
celluloid heroes

I think there is no other big rock band or pop band nearly as versatile as the Stones, I have always thought so, and this versatility is something that the big audience doesn't even really know, other musicians know this and respect the band and Jagger/Richards for it.

when you listen to bands like zeppelin or u2 you might experience different types of music but its becomes obvious your listening to the same band.

with the stones, listen to "were waistin time" then tell me one other song that sounds like it, then listen to "little t and a, then "shes a rainbow" then "rip this joint". when you do that you feel as if each song is by an entirely different band.

you get that effect with not just a few stones songs but with a couple of hundred.

each song different.

This is a hell of a stretch, mnay of those categories aren't actually musical genres as well.

Dance is reggae? Maybe you should look up what reggae music is. I'll give you a hint, The Stones have tries and failed each time, but Dance is NOT one of those attempts.

Anybody Seen My Baby is Rap?? You couldn't be from North America..

Rain Fall Down is Jazz? Dude....!!!

Generation Y - is this a genre? I'm lost here...

Anyways, the Stones have genre-bounced quite a bit, none more successfully than the Brina Jones era. After that it's been contrived-feeling, forced by Jagger style changes, niche one-offs, etc.

My vote for most versatile group ever - succeeding in multiple-genres, commiting eras to different directions... The Grateful Dead for groups, and Bowie for solo artists. The STones can't touch either for creative versilitly, and that's unarguable to me.

Rap: Too Much Blood;

Reggae: You Don't Have To Mean It among many others (and they always nailed it indeed);

Dub: "Feel On Baby"

Funk: Dance Pt.1, Sex Drive, Hot Stuff and Fingerprint FIle (especially in "Love You Live");

Country: Faraway Eyes among many others;

World Music: Continental Drift

Jazz: Melody (even if, let's be honest, real jazz is something much different than that)

TexMex: Indian Girl

Maybe they might not be the most versatile band, but they're more versatile than most.

Rain Fall Down ain't jazz. It's a dance track/r'n'b track.
