I know the quote, and I hear it. But is it really a sitar?

It´s there on Street Fighting Man, too!thumbs up

That is a Shehnai...

Shehnai is an Indian wind instrument, on SFM played by Dave Mason on the end part.
[en.wikipedia.org]

Brian plays sitar on the SFM basic track - confirmed by Keith. Can´t remember the source right now...but His Majesty has written about it here on IORR.

Yeah, in the November 1977 "Guitar Player" magazine (looking at it right now), Keith says - "There's a sitar in the back, too".

Yep! Gives it that zinging sound over the top of the outré - one of the best minutes of RNR chaos ever recorded

I think people confuse tamboura (the drone instrument) with sitar. What's on "Cool, Calm, Collected"? Is that just a dulcimer (and kazoo!).

Re: Stones songs with a Sitar

Tamboura it most certainly is.

Very familiar indeed.

"The first instrument I ever built - ages ago - was a
simple Indian Tamboura. A Tamboura is the usually
4 stringed gourd-bodied droning instrument against which
sitars, tablas etc play. It's the equivalent of the bass
used in western music. Very unlike the bass, the sound of
a Tamboura is wonderfully rich with overtones and harmonics
produced by a unique, but simple bridge".

Funny to think that it is only a question of one song, but thanks to that the sitar is pretty strongly connected to the image of Brian Jones as a musician.

There is definitely also a sitar onPay Your Dues / Street Fighting Man.

It seems to have been part of the Philips tape machine recording thus it's distorted and way back in the mix. You can hear it enter after the first few bars twanging semi quavers on one note, seems to follow the loose guitar melody during "what can a poor boy do?" section then it plays the piano melody after "Street Fighting Man".

Electric dulcimer. smiling smiley

According to Mick, Keith did the kazoo. grinning smiley

That's Brian too ?

Difficult to hear the Sitar, too many overdubs to detect it.

Yes, it's Brian.

The sitar is way back, distorted, but noticeable in places when you focus in on it and know what to listen for.

Is Keith the only source for this, or do you honestly hear a sitar there, Phil?

I better check my hearing.

Listen to the intro for a twanging sound that enters after the first 4 bars or so.

I wonder why they made the sitar almost inaudible ? It's a great sounding instrument.

According to Keith it's part of the initial tape recording so probably a question of balancing the importance of the instruments on that. It's adding something very subtle to the distorted tape recording sound.

I definitely hear something, and it sounds very cool - giving a lot of punch in just the right place, imo. My only problem is that I can't recognise it as a sitar! grinning smiley

Maybe the 'Tamboura' I heard is the only sitar present. You can play Tamboura -like sounds on a sitar, there are extra strings on the instrument for that.

Otherwise I disagree with the mix.smiling smiley

BJ performs on sitar and on the tamboura on SFM

Having owned and played both... kinda, but not really.

The tamboura on the recording is much clearer and louder than the sitar.

So it looks like just the two songs, "PIB" and "SFM" that has a sitar on it. Is there any proof that it is Brian playing it on SFM or could it be someone else? Keith seems to think Brian was only on one song on Beggars Banquet.

If it was Brian, then he did use the sitar three times including A Degree Of Murder sound track. Did he own his own sitar and if yes, I wonder what happened to it?

Re: Stones songs with a Sitar

The proof is Keith saying Brian played on it. Jimmy Miller has also mentioned Brian playing sitar during those sessions. No one else has been credited or claimed to have played sitar and/or tamboura on the track.

Keith remembers Brian playing on SFM and No Expectations.

Yes he owned his own sitars, one of them broke in 1966 according to Keith.

What's the difference, as we call the recorder a flute (blokkfløyte) in Norway? smiling smiley

I didn't know that. ^

The main difference is the sound, how the sound is produced and the way it is held.

This is me playing a recorder.

I play a flute, or to be more precise a transverse flute in this. Forward to 9.00
