Brown Sugar (original version) it has the classic Stones swagger and raunchy throughout. Add to that the classiv GLimmer harmonies, edgy lyrics and roll.

Unquestionably and without a doubt. +1.

The live version of 'Movin' On'. Their absolute zenith. It is wild and reckless with Brian driving that slide.

I've asked myself that question. There are many that can do the job.

Gimme Shelter
Brown Sugar
Jumping Jack Flash

These songs to me show all of what the Stones mean to me.

Me too thumbs up

I'd just reverse the order - Jumping Jack Flash, Brown Sugar, Gimme Shelter.

If it has to just be one, JJF will always epitomise the Stones for me

Brown Sugar! Open G tuned guitar riff, easily recognizable as a Stones song and with a good rocknroll drive.

If you had to pick a song to play for someone who had never heard the band (which seems implausible unless they were in a coma for the last 50 years), the dilemma is there are so many eras of the Stones with so many great sounds.

If I had to pick what the common man would deem as a stereotypical (pardon the pun), I think it has to be either Jumping Jack Flash, Satisfaction, or HTW.

p.s. my fave remains Gimme Shelter but I don't think it's quintessential. smoking smiley

Another vote for HTW - you can dance to it, you can sing it, the lyrics are meaningless and meaningful, puerile and quite clever at the same time, it showcases Keith's signature open G, Charlies' inexorable rhythm and Jagger's most nasty drawl. It is just fun and I could listen to it every day.

First comes JJF, IMO.

Here's A Tough Question
Date: August 19, 2013 00:07

What is the Stone GREATEST track, or tracks, I mean as artists, singers, players, musicians and songwriters? I don't mean their most successful, commercial or popular etc.

I am hung up on this one. I can only come up with a short list.

moonlight mile
no expectations
sway
gimme shelter
shine a light
let it loose
loving cup

what says ya'all?

Jumpin' Jack Flash
Street Fighting Man
Gimme Shelter
Monkey Man
Brown Sugar
Can't You Hear Me Knocking
Moonlight Mile
Rocks Off
Tumbling Dice
Soul Survivor
Coming Down Again
Winter
Tops
Time Waits For No One
Fingerprint File
Slave
Far Away Eyes
Beast Of Burden
Down In A Hole
Feel On Baby
How Can I Stop

My Girl
Suck on the Jugular
This Place is Empty
Blinded by Love
Sweet Neocon
Under the Boardwalk
Indian Girl
Losing My Touch

So many great songs. Its hard to pick just one.
