Opening Songs

Is GOMC really a strong opener? I am curious what people think. I love JJF myself, great punch, unsettles the "warhorse" section, makes way for SFM, and is generally shorter due to the nature of the placement. Thoughts?

The chorus is strong but I was thinking the same thing with JJF or a Honky Tonk Woman for an opener. They both have that punch. GOMC does not really do it for me.

When I saw them open with it at the o2 I felt it lacked the punch that an opener by the Stones should have. Still great of course but think they could have chosen better. Brown Sugar maybe?

Personally for me nothing lives up to the opener at my first Stones gig (The drum crescendo of Continental Drift followed by Start me up - at Wembley on the Urban Jungle tour).

Didn´t they try starting with Paint It Black on only one occasion (LICKS in Australia)?

One thing about the current setlist I do like is that it begins and ends with a song from 1965, which puts the entire museum-like experience in its proper historical context. I think the Beach Boys (who the Stones resemble more and more all the time) also open their show with a hit from '65, California Girls.

Tatters....too funny! Damn, I forgot SMU was an opener in 89', that worked nicely. BS was a strong opener too! Maybe SSC? A Stones opener should have an aggressive open G, immediately recognizable riff! I guess the drum/Keith intro NFA in 94' was pretty strong. I just like the way opening with JJF, BS, HTW....etc shuffles the set.

I agree, Thrylan. Get Off Of My Cloud is not a strong opener. Probably the weakest opener since Not Fade Away (94/95). Personally I would go for an upbeat 70s song like Shattered or Bitch.
They would do the same trick as Start Me Up did. And they are not warhorses...

I love JJ Flash as an opener. GOOMC is more of a 'here we are, lets party song'; which is nice. I rather have a ripping rocker that is one of their Warhorses.

"If You Can't Rock Me" would do it for me. However, "Get Off Of My Cloud" sounds nice as well.

I'd like to see Doom and Gloom open, but would they ever open with a song where Mick plays guitar?

I would prefer Rip this Joint.

Perhaps Get off of My Cloud is an opener AND a statement..
What with all the complaints about ticket prices and Mick Taylor playing time.

Not a good opener. 2nd song maybe. and please bring It's all over now back into the set!

Although thinking about it - if they played an arrangement of GOOMC closer to the original ie a drum intro of a few bars followed by Keith's guitar and the rest joining in - it might have a little more impact.

The way they're playing it now - it just kind of starts quite unceremoniously.

Having said that - it's just great to see them playing anything again. Roll on Hyde Park!

Agree with everyone. JJF is a fantastic opener.

IMO, JJF and Satisfaction shouldn't be played together at the end.

They are both so powerful and encore-town just ain't big enough for the both of 'em.

Three or so shows in the Fall of 2006 had Paint It Black as the opener.
For the LICKS shows in Australia, they opened with Midnight Rambler (Enmore Theatre), Street Fighting Man, Start Me Up and Jumping Jack Flash.

i hope that's just an unfortunately-timed declarative sentence and has nothing to do with opening numbers...

I think Not Fade Away was a great opener with Mick on Harmonica, etc...

Steel Wheels - my first as well, and I agree. In 1989 the 'vegas' thing was okay, it was fresh for its time. Still by far my favourite of the tours I've seen since.

I think they should dispense with opening songs and just get to the main part of the set list.

Boston, Halifax and Regina Autumn 2006, they started the Enmore Theatre - Sydney - show 2003 with Midnight Rambler

I think they shoud start a show with Sympathy, just about the only warhorse not to be an opener - well there's T. Dice and Gimme shelter as well but I don't rate them as openers, Gimme shelter as a closer maybe............
