I prefer Charlie Watts' beat to BB Kings drummer's playing.

All his cymbals do sound like shit in my opinion. He uses china cymbals as a crash, thin ride cymbals (which are usually used in jazz combos) while he plays rock, and now he doesn't even play a proper ride cymbal anymore but uses a crash cymbal for that matter. All these odd choices doesn't make him sound better. Watching him play makes me sick. He's stiff, there is no swing or groove in his playing, and his odd hi-hat technique doesn't make any sense, let alone that it looks stupid.

To me Charlie is one of the most overrated drummers of all time.

Just for the record: I'm a semi professional drummer since 1984.

Now kill me.

Agree very much.
But I blame it (once again) on this beast called 'Stadium Rock". Those stages are huge; there are all kinds of computerized lighting cues, visual cues from Jagger and Leavell. They are playing to some bpm counter somewhere. So he has to change his style. I figure someone like Taylor Hawkins can do this and come off more effortlessly, but he is also 40 years younger.
Charlie probably figures a righteous ride won't cut it on a stadium stage. Too soft and subtle.
THAT is the biggest loss in all of stadium rock: Subtlety.
Look at Jagger waving his arms like a maniac...
