OT: Paul McCartney Debuts Five Beatles Songs in Concert

I read the below article on Ultimateclassicrock.com
This is a setlist from a performer who wants to dig deep in his catalogue so as not play the same tired setlist over and over. Hey Mick take a look at what McCartney is giving his fans and at far less prices than the Stones are charging!

If there’s any rocker who can rest on his laurels onstage, it’s Paul McCartney. After all, with such a huge catalog, he can simply fill up a setlist with dozens of his hits, play them night after night without changing, and nobody complains that they didn’t get to hear their favorites.

Except he doesn’t. Consequence of Sound noted that, at the opening show of McCartney’s ‘Out There’ world tour in Belo Horizonte, Brazil on Saturday (May 4), McCartney gave debuts to five Beatles songs: ‘Eight Days a Week,’ ‘Your Mother Should Know,’ ‘All Together Now,’ ‘Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!’ and ‘Lovely Rita.’ Even more impressive is that ‘Eight Days a Week’ and ‘Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!’ were originally sung by John Lennon. The videos of the songs can be found below.

In addition, two Wings hits, ‘Listen to What the Man Said’ and ‘Hi, Hi, Hi,’ were performed by McCartney solo for the first time. Both songs appeared on the 1976 live album ‘Wings Over America,’ which will be re-issued on May 28.

McCartney will play two more dates in Brazil, including tonight (May 6) before hitting the United States for a month of dates, beginning May 18 in Orlando. He will then perform a week of shows in Europe and returning to North America for another five weeks.

Odd that the Beatles never played Eight Days A Week in concert. It's a testament to their greatness that they probably considered it to be a throwaway.

I'd love to see Paul in concert again...that was an almost unexpectedly great show last November in Vancouver.

You know what's a good one that he's never done live? Martha My Dear. Maybe he can't hit those high notes anymore.

What a fantastic setlist. That's some solid value for your bucks.

Wow, very impressive setlist list. Don't think he's ever introduced that many changes all at once. Plus there's Junior's Farm and Hi, Hi, Hi. Hope there will be more Euro dates coming up so I can see him.

That's why the Stones need to record one last great album, so they can surge ahead of the Beatles and be declared the greatest rock and roll band of all time. I'm sure I read that here somewhere.

He can't, although he gives it the old college try. That for me is the only weak point in the show.

Don't worry, if the Stones themselves can't manage it, the Sons of the Rolling Stones are waiting in the wings to take up the challenge.

Interesting setlist, nice to see ‘Hope of Deliverance’ back too, and that he kept "My Valentine", generally he tosses new songs of the previous tour in a hurry, well I guess that one's for Nancy ;-)

Ok, let's go hunting for the videos now...ok here they are, ramble44, please post the link the next time, it's good form and it saves everyone time ;-) -> [ultimateclassicrock.com]

My bad. Next time I will post. I guess I was just in awe of the amazing setlist he played compared to what the Stones are putting out!

NP, thanks for pointing out that article, would have missed the fact that Macca had started touring...and I'm a big fan, but there is no IORR equivalent for him ;-)

Yeah but he doesn't bring back Ringo to guest on one number so our boys have him beat there.

Yes but he could trump our boys by having Ringo come out and play "Octopus' Garden" and then have Yoko come out and do back up on "Obla Di Obla Da"

Yeah but he doesn't bring back Ringo to guest on one number so our boys have him beat there.

When I saw McCartney in Vancouver last November, I was actually a bit surprised he sang Day In The Life since that's a song Lennon sang (mostly). I see he will even be playing in Winnipeg this summer!

I saw him at Yankee Stadium a couple of years ago and he was great. Based on this setlist I think I may head down to Barclays and see if I can get a decently priced ticket right before or after showtime.

Well, if 'Wings' are butterflies, that means sons of wings would be caterpillars. Cocoons are sometimes located under stones so you may in fact be on to something...or something.

Hi Mick, you see? Anything is possible when you REALLY think about your legacy, and more importantly, your long time customers/fans.... If you can't do a tour "right" from every angle-- Price/Product/Promotion/Place.... don't freaking do it... or at least, DON"T SCREW THE LONG TIME, end user....

Huh? I bet thousands and thousands and thousands and thousands of people that have attended these recent shows have had a blast and will never forget it. Perhaps it's just people on message boards that have problems with the concerts and "every angle". Perhaps this is a good example of the downside of being a hardcore fan. The inability to just relax and enjoy.

I am sure that Paul adding five Beatles songs while the Stones are "stealing the headlines" with their 50 and Counting tour is purely coincidental! NOT! And to think that many actually believe there is no legacy war between the Stones and the Beatles for greatest of all time. Paul is just protecting his own - waging the good fight right to the end, on his own. Fortunately for the him there is help on the way in the form of his son James and later with the other sons of the Beatles. Of course none of the parties (Stones or Beatles) will ever admit to it. Good English boys are supposed to be humble as apple pie. May the best band win!

You obviously have no clue about Paul and his setlists the past several years...debuting different songs is normal for him each tour.

I haven't heard any buzz about Macca outside of this forum. By the way talk about Vegas! Macca is more Vegas than The Stones will ever be.

That's correct, it's the silent legacy war that nobody wants to admit to. Paul is calling the Stones out! Time for the Stones to respond with more rarities! And of course a new album, maybe two?

Thousands have enjoyed the shows of both artists: the stones get fannies in the seat with 85 tix.. just look at the pix for the LA show..My intent on my post was to suggest that the stones and their advisors, have f^cked up this tour form a price/distribtution/product/ POV.. Look at TM. see how many tix are available for any show and do the same for Paul Mc... not even close.... Stones mgmt resorts to desperate deep discounts due to a misread of the market and overall hubris... McCartney just goes on and on... AEG/MJ/RS should know what they are and what are not...face it. The Stones, and their leadership F*cked up the marketing and, worse cannot even play their songs with a modicum of passion and/or judgement... Gwen Stefani? Keith Urban? GTFO! Thank God I only paid 85 to see their swan song.... nothing like watching a bus wreck
