Metamorphosis - Can someone explain it?

This is one of the weirdest Stones releases of all time.

after the Stones formed thier own label, Decca and Allen Klein put it out using material they still had control of...

so it was kind of an "opening of the vaults" that the Stones had no control over themselves.

Maybe not a classic, but some interesting stuff on there.

I think ABKCO were entitled to one more all new release album and that's what they put out?

Bill's superior Black Box idea was ditched due to there not being enough Jagger Richards songs on there thus less revenue for ABKCO.

I have a hard time getting past the bad sound.. Hate that pseudostereo Phil Specter vibe. Several great tracks on it but many that I can't believe they recorded at all. Thank you for clarifying on the Decca deal. Makes sense.

Family is a great song....

"Here comes the girl, she's got her head screwed on
But it ain't screwed on right
Her ambition is to be a prostitute....."

"... But the breaks just weren't right." Great song indeed and with great lyrics. For some reason, the recording always seems to be subpar to me. I'd love to hear it rerecorded with the current line up.

Only for this song the whole album was worth releasing, I loved it when it came out the first release of their vaults, I do understand that some of them where never released still fun though...............

Some fine things on there and some crap. Both the Stones and ABKCO agreed to do an archive release. However, Bills version of the album contained very few Jagger/Richards songs, so Klein and Oldham resurrected the old Necrophilia project because it had more original compositions, buttered it up and released it as Metamorphosis.

Released just as the Stones 1975 tour began. They didn't have a new release out, so Klein did it for them (or to them).

I like it... Even the 64/65 songs that only feature Jagger and Richards...

Lots of stuff that really was not the Stones at all (Andrew Oldham demos) but worth the price of admission for Jiving Sister Fanny, I'm Going Down, Downtown Suzy, and Family.

The Stevie Wonder cover is great. Sort of. Especially I like Charlie's drumming. If it is Charlie. Don't know.

I agree. Anyone have a "who played what" for each track. Seems they list a lot of people in the credits...

McLaughlin and Page both are involved on some songs, if memory serves...

Hasn't Keith admitted to copying Page's Heart Of Stone solo 'note-for-note' for the later-recorded Stones version? I actually really, really like the Andrew Loog Oldham Orchestra take of this song. Superbly sloppy guitar-work from Jimmy Page.

The fantastic Big Jim Sullivan contributes the solo to We're Wasting Time. For those unaware, before Page hit the session scene in late '63, Big Jim was the No.1 for sessions in London.

I´ve heard that, Al, but the solo on HOS, as I recall it, is different smiling smiley

The ALO Orchestra version which is heard in Charlie Is My Darling and on the ALO album The Rolling Stones Song Book is the one Keith supposedly copied.

The original UK/German release carried 16 tracks where as
the US release dropped Somethings Just Stick In Your Mind..
We're Wastin' Time ... which pulled it back to a 14 tracker ...
