Some great choices here and a lot of albums i have never listened to so thanks for the suggestions I will def check some of those out.

Always thought that Grace Slick could have made a killer album in her JA days. Manhole is OK but not her best songwriting. Her Sunfighter album with Paul Kantner is pretty good but as for purely solo albums then Dreams is my favourite although a more radio friendly Grace.

Sheryl Crowe - always makes good albums (a bit like a female Tom Petty in my book)

Janis - Pearl is great but Cheap Thrills is really a Big Brother & the Holding Company album not a Janis solo.

Another one i thought about was Martha Velez - Friends & Angles (I think Clapton is on this one somewhere).

A little bit obscure but Parallelograms by Linda Perhacs is now a rediscovered classic and Gypsy People by Jan & Lorraine has a nice 60's folk/psych sound to it.

I agree w/tatters' submission, w/HEJIRA a close second.

Thought you might enjoy this (unintentionally?) hilarious cover version.

Hell's Teeth !

I did forget Aretha: her material on Columbia is underrated, and I love her Queen In Waiting album. However, I also have a great love for Live @ The Fillmore and Amazing Grace: both were made in the same time period, one sacred, the other secular.

Another great album came from that time, though by a male artist, and that was King Curtis Live at The Fillmore, which was recorded earlier on in the same evening as Aretha's live album.

I'll name a few that have not been noted yet.

Mina - Just anything - The Tiger of Cremona, an Italian institution, one the greatest singers ever!

Elis Regina - Just anything - The Brasilian Mina

Cat Power - Juke Box - One of the greatest albums published recently (my fav female artist in the last 30 years together with Amy Whinehouse)

Doris Duke - I'm a loser (take 2 at the price of 1!) SUPERB soul voice AND two superb albums

Esther Phillips - Just anything, but my personal fav is From a whisper to a scream

This is also a wonderful album with a great late 60s feel to it. Kind of sunshine pop mixed crossed with Arthur lee and Burt Bacharach. Margo Guryam - Take A Picture.

OK; I'll mention Tapestry, and I'll also mention Cat Power's The Greatest.

BTW: What about Caught Up and Still Caught Up by Millie Jackson ?

I don't own anything by her, but I know that this track listing is for Linda's Simple Dreams album, not Mad Love.

Mad Love was her attempt at "New Wave."

I don't like the later Millie Jackson; it's way too unsubtle.

No, I was saying bitchin'. It's not an album of hers! I know what you mean though - she did a horrible track called the Ph uck U Symphony.

Every album by Kate Bush. What a wonderful artist.
