Well, they polished up some older songs and came out with a BETTER albm than Some Girls. But I think that it's simply this; anything recorded 1977-1986 is hit-or-miss, the machine had been going for so long that they finally tapped out and had to struggle to put out good stuff.
You can't really talk about their Vegas stuff in the same context though, those 4-albums-plus-six-songs are pure, contrived tour product, not deserving of their name. They haven't even had to properly acknowledge a bass player at all because hey, they're the Rolling $tones.

I love the stones. But the sound of the stones on record to me is 64 through to 76, although i still enjoy and listen to stuff after that.
Some girls however always seemed a curse to me, the huge success built on a record that was indeed back to basics that they have tried to capture ever since. It's hard for me to comprend that the same band that made sticky fingers/exile could produce 7 years later the steaming turd that was emotional rescue and that to me is some girls curse. They have tried to remake that ever since and lost the ability to build up that layer of sound that was complex yet simple...i'm talking torn and frayed for example not many chords but layered to sound intricately brilliant.
Moonlight mile is another i could name countless others. Now before anyone jumps on the Ronnie verses mick taylor bandwagon, Ronnie is more that capable of layer a number of instruments and counter melodies so that's not the issue.
During the voodoo lounge era I remember seeing a video of them recording "i go wild" with just the backing....and Keith was laying down the very simple guitar chords that in the past would have been interwoven with session musians and flourishs from the like's of nicky hopkins, but in my view due to some girls and trying to recapture that sucess they never went back to doing that and I go wild comes out sounding like a half realised demo.
I appreciate there are some exceptions contential drift..moon is up but they are rare.
Anyone else feel this is the case. What's your view?

Some Girls is one of my favorite albums and I happen to like Emotional Rescue as well its not great but its solid. It is not a "turd" as you refer to it.
